Double buggy recommendation for large toddler and new baby

Sunsh1ne87 · 04/05/2022 11:58

Second baby due in Nov and will also have a 2 year who still enjoys being in the buggy while shopping, when he's tired during walks etc
He's a big boy and at not even 2 yet is already wearing age 3-4 clothes, he's 36lb and 94cm tall so I need something that will fit him and also his new baby sibling
Open to any suggestions, I've done so much research I'm stuck so would love to hear from other parents who have already trialled and used a double buggy and your opinions please? Thanks so much

I'm in the exact predicament. Huge 16 month old and #2 due in Nov. Following with interest.

Out ‘n’ About double would fit the bill, I think

Phil n Ted's. My nearly 4yo can still fit in it and it pushes like a dream.

Mountain Buggy Duet is fab and is age up to 4yrs

Baby jogger double. The seats are huge and you can get a fitting for a bassinet to face towards you for the first few months.

My tall 3 and 4 year olds still use it quite comfortably now on long days out

I’ve got the uppababy vista. Pricey but works.

Phil and Teds double decker type - bought ours second hand for £90, used as a double for 18 months then for the youngest as a single for another 2 ish years, then sold it for £40. Brilliant.

I had a Graco stadium duo tandem, but it was so big and heavy i swapped to a Joie Aire double and love it so much more! Its light, it folds easy and it fits through most doorways

I liked the Phil and Teds' as it was adaptable from single to double and back again if your toddler is (hopefully) progressing to walking. You never need to be pushing an empty seat. Apart from a little stroller we took on holiday, it was our only pushchair.
You would just need to check if your toddler is already too big to use the small seat on the upper clips, when the bottom part is in lie-flat position. They'll be fine in the main seat.

Bugaboo donkey. My DS is 2.5 and absolutely hated the ones where one is on top of the other. The bugaboo can have one parent facing seat and one world facing. It also converts into single mode for days when I don't have DS with me. I got one second hand for about £400 and reckon I'll be able to sell it on for the same amount

Second vote for this. They are amazing and the narrowest double buggy you can get (although this fact might be out of date now) it fits through normal sized internal doorways. Love mine.

*second vote for Mountain Buggy Duet

It has a weight limit of 20kg when on top, and my 3yo fit in it like that when we first had it. He's nearly 4 now and does fit better in the main seat but that's fine because baby can go in the second seat set up underneath now. We rarely use it though any more, only if the big one is ill and we need to get some fresh air.

I think the weight limits are

Main seat sat upright 22kg
Main seat reclined 18kg
Second seat on top 20kg
Second seat underneath 15kg

You always put the little one on the bottom so either in the main seat reclined flat with the second seat on top, or in the second seat underneath with the main seat in the upright setting.

We didn't have the carrycot but a friend did and really rated that as well.

I looked at the Mountain buggy and Baby jogger at the weekend. Both great for space and manoeuvrability but I do find a side by side double very bulky. Have ended up ordering the Maxi-cosi Lila with duo kit seat which I just happened to come across online so no idea what it will be like but it says toddler seat only goes up to 3.5 years. My first is a small 14 months so will be fine for me and she can also sit world facing whilst baby is parent facing/world facing (she would not want to sit parent facing or have her view blocked by the other seat as she loves to look out) I would look at the mountain buggy or baby jogger if toddler is big, I preferred the baby jogger, was really nice. I'm sure you can add a carrycot to both of them as well. There is the out n about too but found this very heavy!

@BertieBotts 15 years ago now, my memory is a bit foggy! I feel a bit nostalgic for those pushchair days.

I love the look of the donkey but are the seats big enough for a hefty toddler?! He's the size of a 4 year old and he's not even 2 yet x
