I don't drive and walk everywhere.

I’d say yes in those circumstances. Probably
Depends a bit on how far you / your 2yo is willing to walk.

You may get away with a sling and buggy board, giving flexibility to alternate who is in the buggy. It depends on your kids and the kind of outings you have.

Mine are the same age gap. Didn't buy a double. We managed perfectly with single buggy, buggy board and sling.

Depends on distance you walk and if your child walks much now? I didn’t need our double nipper buggy when dc4 was born and there was 20 months between them and dc3. However Dc2 was 18 months when dc3 was born and I needed our double as she was a late Walker and wasn’t keen on going far, loved her naps in it too. Definitely depends on the child.
Would a sling/carrier be better for newborn with buggy for older when and as needed?

Yes definitely if you walk everywhere. Get a mountain buggy duet. Goes for miles and so easy to push. If you get a second hand one you can resell without losing loads.

Yes! Cant trust a 2 year old not to run in the road. Plus a 2 and 3 year old often cant walk long distances and will want to be carried halfway. Buggy much easier for all involved

Same age gap and didn’t get a double. Managed with carrier and older one walking or sitting in top of our out and about (which she loved and buggy withstood). In hind sight I would have found a buggy board really helpful.

I did and wouldn't have been without it.
Someone will be along shortly to tell you that their toddler carries the shopping home for them as it's only 3 miles.

I have 2.5yo and newborn and get by without a double buggy. However, we havn't used the buggy for my eldest for a while as he's a great walker, and I find slings less of a hassle. I mostly sling the newborn and have my 2yo walk. He'll happily walk 3 or 4km though, so really depends on your child. I hate trying to get a buggy into narrow doorways, navigate cluttered shop aisles, etc. Other mums swear by their double buggy. It seems getting a stacked one is preferable to side by side, if you'll be using it round town.

I'd done away with mine by that age, but we as a family had a car, so possibly, if you do a lot of walking (eg carry shopping home instead of deliver). Get second hand if you aren't planning on using it for long.
I found one of those backpack reins helpful, then toddler can walk and you have your hand through the loop so they can't get distracted. Less than 2 years between mine, I used a buggy board, reins and a sling with a single after the first 6 months. The double was a bit of a waste of money. One holiday the toddler did a lot of walking then was ready to collapse we out her in the buggy and carried the baby. Easy enough with 2 adults, harder with one.
I found the double cumbersome and couldn't get in normal shops or public toilets (the hospital won't let you use the accessible ones unless you are disabled, which I'm not. I just didn't want to leave my children unaccompanied while I had a wee).

My DS was born when my DSwas 18months old. I walk just like you but I didn't buy a double. Used my baby carrier (Stokke is amazing) everywhere and pushed DD in her usual pram. DS is 7 months now and I still do the same!

I'm not sure if it's the carrier that I should give all the credit to or I'm strong (ha!) but I've even lifted DD into her pram(when in parks) with DS on my chest.

I Would get a Phil and Ted's like double. You don't want to be stranded 2 miles from home with loads of shopping and a toddler who has decided they will only lie on the floor for the next hour.

Fifthtimelucky · 18/02/2021 17:59

I probably wouldn't, but I guess it depends on how long your walks are likely to be.

My two were 2 yrs 3 months apart. I bought a second hand twin pushchair and wished I hadn't bothered. I hardly ever used it.
