Buggy for a MASSIVE toddler...!

Hi all I hope you can help. My nearly-two-year old is a giant. He's 90cm tall and weighs 32lbs. He's rapidly outgrowing his Bugaboo Bee and I want to buy him a buggy that will last the distance. Can anyone recommend anything?

  • it needs to be lightweight (I am not very strong, live on a hill in a city and struggle to push him around at the moment sometimes)
  • it needs to fold easily and fit in my boot / living room
  • I'd like it to have a footrest for him.

Thanks so much. I wish I could go to the shops to take a better look!

I'd go with out n about, baby jogger or oyster. All good toddler prams

Our big toddler fitted into the McLaren techno Xlr until he was 5 (I only know because we kept it for the next one).

I've got an ancient (second hand) Babyjogger City Mini and I love it - folds with one hand, easy to push, decent sized basket and the seat seems massive. My daughter is likely to be tall (both me and DP are) so I wanted something that would last. She's a tall 17 month old now and still has heaps of growing room left!

Silver Cross Pop goes up to 25kg and is a great umbrella pushchair.

I also have a giant child so I know your pain!

The Mamas and Papas Armadillo Flip has a big seat, huge hood and footrest, and a decent basket. Fairly compact fold too. It’s not the lightest to push up a hill with a toddler in, though, but might be worth a look? My almost five year old (110 cm) could probably just about fit in it still, and it goes in the boot of our Seat Ibiza.

We also have a Maclaren (think it’s a techno), which is much lighter but the basket is tiny and that matters to us.

If you want light to push, I’d recommend searching for something with proper air tyres, it makes a real difference with a heavy child. Out n About Nipper is good but I’m not sure how tall the seat is

We had the Maclaren XLR which we used up to the age of 6. The wheels are big though which makes folding it down quite bulky. I know there are other Maclaren's with smaller wheels.

I second the silver cross pop. Ds is 2 and 89cm, 14.5kg and fits it will. Bonus as it has a factor 50 sun shade and it reclines to flat too.

I have a Nipper for a humongous toddler. Plenty of room and very tough. It's on Child 3 now.

Problem is it doesn't store particularly small. I just came to the conclusion that my hall will never be neat again. Once you get rid of the buggies you have 100 shoes out at once.

fedupandlookingforchange · 22/06/2020 17:33

I can see others say the silver cross pop. I have one and its really good, plenty of room for a large toddler, very well built, easy to fold, easy to push and certain colours can be be a lot cheaper than others.

MrsWooster · 22/06/2020 17:34

Another vote for our n about nipper. Drives like a dream, even when kid’s enormous.

xyzandabc · 22/06/2020 17:38

The out and about nipper isn't particularly lightweight if you're having to fold it and lift it carry it anywhere. However to push with child in, it is the lightest easiest thing I have ever pushed. Turns on a sixpence using only one hand easily. Also plenty roomy enough for an average 4/5 yr old.

I once managed to fit 5 children in the double nipper aged 1-5 years. 2 in each seat and one on the footplate!

I have a Joie Literax for my 3 year old. I lended (?) it to my neighbour for her 5 year old after he had an injury and he fitted in it no problem.

This is so, so amazing. Thank you so much! I've just adopted him and his Bugaboo is second hand. It's lasted for the six weeks I've so far had him for and now his head hits the canopy! Thankfully I didn't pay too much for it!

I'll let you know how I get on x

@mahrezzy - is it the bee 5 that you have currently? If so check that the seat is fully extended (YouTube will show you how) as it’s designed to grow with child. I’m not sure whether earlier models do the same.

JoleneExotic · 24/06/2020 21:43

My toddler is taller than that and still fits his bee. Actually fits the bee better than a silver cross umbrella! The bee seat might be on the smallest settings, it's quite adjustable and ends up pretty big. Mine can still sleep in it reclined slightly.

LittleLadysMama · 29/06/2020 21:52

Following with interest as I'm already in the market for a new pram for my 9 month old! She's not massive for her age but quite long and our Tutti Bambini Arlo is only really usable now with the hood extended. If the hood is flat against the pram then her head needs to sit on top of it and against the wire edging so far from ideal.
Really didn't expect to need a new pram so soon so keen to see all recommendations on here.
