Double running pushchair advice - using with one kid or different ages

Hi there,

Has anyone got any experience/ advice for using double running buggies with two different size kids or even just one child at a time?

I've got a 3yo and 7mo – wondering what it's like to run with a 15KG child on one side and 7KG baby on the other... does it feel uneven? Could I also use a double with just one child in? I'd love the option not to take two if one's at nursery but wondering if that's unstable? Is there anything I should look out for when choosing a buggy?

We're looking at getting either the Thule glide double or the Out n About sport nipper atm because we'd like the option to either run or use day-to-day...

Any thoughts welcome!

Thanks so much

Hey!

I use the Out’n’About Sport Nipper. Have a big almost 2 year old and a 1 year old. I love it. It’s great for everyday use and for running with. I definitely don’t find it unstable when running with both of them, have never tried with just one but wouldn’t see it being an issue. Only thing is it’s still quite bulky even when packed flat but it fits in our fairly big boot no bother.

Following as we’ll be in this position in about a year! We already have a Nipper Sport for our now 19 month old, so might just get a second secondhand jogger for when the new baby is 6 months ish and take one each as I can’t really foresee needing two in the buggy at once day to day (happy to pop the younger one in a sling if the older one needs it for longer walks). Or might consider something like a Phil and Teds Sport where you have one underneath if I find I actually want to run with both during the day when DH isn’t around.

I didn't enjoy running with a double. I found it too cumbersome, it was much harder to get up and down a pavement at speed if you needed to get out of the way of other people coming towards you. There's 16 months between my 2 and I found I always had to have the heaviest one furthest from the traffic, most pavements slope slightly towards the road for drainage and it's so much more noticeable when you have the heavier kid on the road side. So half your run you are fine, the other half when you're running home in the opposite direction you spend all your time stopping the pushchair sliding towards the road. If that makes sense.

We had a standard out n about nipper, it was a good few years ago now, and I did run a bit with it on big wide cycle paths and that was ok, but it was not fun on pavements, much much less fun than running with 1.

There's a chap runs with a Thule glide double at our local parkrun and he's a total nuisance, no-one can get past him because the paths are not particularly wide and he's constantly weaving about to avoid bumpy tree roots because they make his babies cry. But it looks like a good pushchair, he never looks like he's struggling. He's got 2 small babies though, he might be sweating a bit more by the time we get back to Parkrun and they have grown.
