Lightweight city pushchair - help!

Hi All, I’m 31 weeks pregnant and am looking for a buggy. Obviously my partner and I can’t go to shops to test any out so I’m having to rely on online reviews.
We live in a city but like country walks so we ideally would like something lightweight, compact but fairly sturdy.
The main buggy that we’re considering is the Babyzen Yoyo but I’d love to know what people make of this buggy and if there are any others of a similar size that I should look at.
The Yoyo is at the top end of our budget so I’m not looking at the super-pricey varieties!
Thanks so much!

The yoyo will not go off-road. It barely copes on uneven city streets. How about the new mountain buggy, not the nano, one bigger?

EJ85 · 13/04/2020 19:17

@TimeForCableTies I haven’t looked at any Mountain Buggies - is it the Mini that you mean? We’ll mainly be using the pram in the city so compactness is really important. Thanks!

Love the YoYo, it’s great for city living, public transport, air travel (not so much at the moment though sadly), it has tons of room for a tall toddler and it’s very durable. We’re coming up to nearly 3 years with ours and plan to keep it for the next baby. However, it is definitely a city stroller though and even pushing it across the grass in the park is a bit of a work out! The baby jogger city jogger mini GT could be worth a look but really city living and off reading aren’t 2 massively compatible traits. Personally I’d get a sling for country walks and buy the stroller that works best for most of your time.

oohnicevase · 13/04/2020 19:22

In my experience you need two . I never found one that meets both needs . I had a baby jogger for town and a petite star Zia or maclaren for town in the boot of my car .

IDontLikeMondays88 · 13/04/2020 19:29

So I am in the same position as you in terms of I can’t go to shops at the moment and also I want something compact.

I am looking at a Yo-yo, a Bugaboo Bee and a Mamas and Papas Flip XT. But I am not sure quite which at the moment! People who have a Yo-yo do seem to really love it, despite its limitations ie that it’s not for country roads.

EJ85 · 13/04/2020 19:38

@ShyTown Thank you, that’s really helpful! It’s really tricky not being able to test any out in person but you’re right - we’ll never find one that ticks every single box! Better to get a city-friendly one, I think.

Get the yoyo for city living and a sling for country walks.

EJ85 · 13/04/2020 19:40

@oohnicevase My sister had a baby jogger for her kids and loved it. I just remember it being fairly heavy but she bought hers almost ten years ago!

EJ85 · 13/04/2020 19:41

@IDontLikeMondays88 It’s so tricky, isn’t it? I was considering the Bee too but someone told me that the baby is quite exposed. Difficult to find the perfect one when you can’t test them in person.

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz Thank you, good advice!

Do you have a car? Do you want one that is car seat compatible with adapters? Do you have a bassonet or Moses basket for baby to sleep in for the first few months? Are you likely to just use it in the city and no big kind walks? Do you intend to have one pushchair till baby is 3/4 and no longer needs one/gets tired...

DorotheaHomeAlone · 13/04/2020 19:49

We have a city mini jogger. The yo yo wasn’t on the market when we bought 6 years ago. It’s pretty light, easy to fold and pretty good on grass etc. We use it in London and it was great on buses etc but bc a bit wide for the tube, especially the escalators. We bought a very light mclaren once first dc could sit up and alternated depending on our plans. Worked well for us. We spent less than £400 on both and both are still in use for dc3.

bumbledeedum · 13/04/2020 19:54

@IDontLikeMondays88 the flip XT is quite a lot heavier and bigger than the yo-yo, definitely not ideal if you want to be able to carry the pram and the baby at the same time. We had a flip not a yo-yo, fab pram but I definitely wouldn't recommend it as a proper city pram.

Incrediblytired · 13/04/2020 20:00

I would 100% get the baby zen if I had my time again. I got an off road britax affinity and it’s a solid buggy but the compact babyzen will seenyou through until child is 4... if you get a travel system, you’ll end up buying a cheap lightweight buggy anyway and wishing you had babyzen.

I spent £750 on travel system and used it until she was 1 and then £40 on a joie nitro and ended up using it ever since (she’s now 3) but wishing it was a better quality buggy with a better hood etc...

KnobJockey · 13/04/2020 20:05

I've got a baby jogger city mini lux, it's absolutely fab for everything but off-road.
It's very light, goes forward and rear facing, you can get a carrycot and car seat adaptors, folds so small it fits in my fiat 500 boot. And it was cheap- I got it on offer for £300 for everything but the car seat. DD will fit in it for years.

mynameiscalypso · 13/04/2020 20:08

We have a Bee and a Yo Yo although only got the latter when DS is 6 months; I didn't feel it was robust enough to cope with London pavements and much preferred the Bee for a newborn.

LulusMiniEgg · 13/04/2020 20:11

I work for an online nursery company (and a ship too but obviously closed at the moment!)
I would recommend the Babyzen YOYO2, it’s what I actually have and we use it everyday, even on light country walks (along canal etc). The newborn kit is quite small though so if you & partner are quite tall maybe consider some others like the Ergobaby metro with the newborn kit or Baby Jogger City Tour 2 with carrycot.
The Oyster 3 might be worth thinking about too. It’s not technically a city pram but folds up pretty small with the seat attached in both directions & no need for a carrycot as it lies flat so saves space if you live in a flat or small house (it being a city).
Hope that helps Grin

ShyTown · 13/04/2020 20:14

@IDontLikeMondays88 I looked at the Bee too and was pretty torn. Ultimately the YoYo won for the smaller fold and the genius shoulder strap. I can carry it up/down the stairs on public transport or to our apartment (at the time we lived in a 3rd fl walk up) with both hands free for baby/bags. The YoYo can also go on a plane as a carry on whilst the Bee has to go in the hold. Storage wise I hang it on the coat hooks so there’s no issue in our tiny entrance. As far as I could work out, the main advantages of the Bee are that it can parent face after the newborn stage and you can adjust the handlebar height. It’s a really tough decision when you can’t go and play with them, I feel for you! But I don’t think you can’t go wrong with either tbh.

EJ85 · 13/04/2020 20:35

@yukka
Yes we do have a small car so need one that folds away nicely. It’ll mainly be used for city. We have a Moses basket so don’t need a big carrycot to go with the pram. Ideally we’d like to invest in one that’ll last a few years!

@DorotheaHomeAlone Thanks, I’ll look into as an option!

@Incrediblytired Thanks, that’s really helpful. Sounds like it might be worth the investment.

Have a look at silver toss wing and jet. Very similar to yo-yo but cheaper. I bought the wing and took to Spain on holiday with 8 month old, it was brill. I wouldn't use it every day but we walk off road a lot so I wouldn't use the yo yo every day either. I didn't find the yo yo any better in the shop, but the yo yo is compatible with maxi cosi car seat and that might be helpful for you.

Also have a look for new born inserts as I wouldn't put a newborn in any of these styles without additional support.

I heard good things about the bee too.

yukka · 13/04/2020 21:47

Silvercross obvs not toss 🤣🤣

sarge89 · 13/04/2020 21:50

Have a look at the Joolz Hub Smile
