Clueless first time mum seeking off-road pushchair suggestions

I'm currently pregnant with my first and am completely overwhelmed by the world of prams/pushchairs/buggys/whatever they're called! Do you wise owls have any suggestions?

Considerations:

  • Needs to be suitable off-road (especially the beach...is that even possible?!)
  • I'm 5'1, DH is 5'10 so it would need adjustable handlebar height
  • Ideally it won't be a brand new model as I'd like to buy secondhand on eBay/FB marketplace
  • Should be suitable for newborn+
  • Should ideally be parent facing and able to convert to world facing

Does such a thing exist? Is there a method to researching? I've had a look around mothercare, but obviously they only have the newest models so I'm not sure how relevant that is.

It takes ages to choose - you need to go to a shop and play with a lot and see what fits in your boot. Then you can search out what you want 2nd hand.

After a lot of agonising we went for the icandy Peach All-terrain - although we bought new.

Also I recommend looking at Pushchair Expert and their youtube videos as that helps you decide what you like and don't.

Other models I tried and ruled out for various reasons (either boot size or the weight) were:

Uppababy Vista
Bugaboo Chameleon
Silvercross Pioneer
Nuna Mixx
Maxi Cosi Nova
M&P Occaro
Quinny Buzz Extra

The Silvercross and the Ocarro were my 2nd and 3rd choice before we opted for the icandy

I;m 35 weeks and we only just decided!

Phil and Ted
Out n About Nipper
Icandy Apple with jogger wheel for beach (won't be easy to push but don't think any would)

moreismore · 08/08/2019 15:18

Phil and teds explorer is great. Inflated tyres so good off road and on the beach (not on very deep soft sand but I doubt much with wheels is!) Lots around second hand.

Thanks guys! We're going to hit up a big mothercare and do some testing.

We have not long got a Bugaboo Fox, the man that gave us a demo at the baby show showed us it had a mode for getting it over sand or like a gravelled drive.
I am currently still pregnant so we haven’t used it yet, but it’s a lovely pram!

Sunshinegirl82 · 10/08/2019 18:14

Most off roaders only have a world facing option. We have the outnabout nipper 360 double and it's great and suitable from birth but it doesn't parent face. You can buy a carrycot which will allow parent facing for the first few months if that would work.

Otherwise I'd look at the bugaboo Fox and all terrain iCandy.

I had a Maxi Cosi Mura 4. It was secondhand - I don’t think they make it any more. There’s a 3 wheeled option (the Mura 3) but I didn’t find that terribly stable - my sister had one and I did nearly tip it over 😳

Mine was a bloody tank though - we changed the rear tyres for super off-road ones with loads of tread and it took everything I threw at it on. Not much fun ploughing through dry sand on the beach but that would be the same for any pram I think. But deep mud, the woods, a small flood, tree roots, steps - it did the lot with aplomb. And it had a parent facing option! I loved it.

Out and about nipper is brilliant. Best pushchair I ever had, both single and double. I used it from newborn with a Phil and Ted's cocoon which fitted in the seat nicely but I think you can even get a carrycot for it now.

It doesn't tick all your boxes but tbh as you've not done this before, your boxes are what you think you need rather than what you know you'll find useful with hindsight.

pastabest · 10/08/2019 18:41

Out n about nipper 360

If you buy the carry cot to go with it it's parent facing until they are too big for the carry cot (about 5 months).

It goes absolutely everywhere though I've any terrain, and they hold their value second hand as so many people get an all singing and dancing travel system first and then buy the out n about when they realise they need something more practical.

Check out the out n about selling page on Facebook for secondhand ones.

reefedsail · 10/08/2019 18:41

We had a babyjogger summit- it has the big wheels so it can do mud/ sand/ snow, pretty much anywhere you want to go, it will go with you.

It also has single hand folding which you can do with the baby in your other arm. The wheels pop off really easily so you can fit it in a regular sized boot no problem. It also pushes like a dream even single handed. I took it in shops and all sorts.

It is only world facing, but it will take your car seat in the top while they are tiny and you can get a carrycot. Lays flat for sleeping.

Mountain Buggy urban jungle Or all terrain

My brother had his 11 years and it did all 3 children and they live in the sticks!! Very good off road and very easy to handle

Has parent facing options

Not silly prices new like some of the big names 🙄

We have just bought the urban jungle and the bloke in the shop said he had no idea why more people didn't go for them over the big more expensive names.

reefedsail · 10/08/2019 19:24

When we bought our Summit the MB didn't have one hand folding. I see they've added that now to the Terrain. They are very similar prices.

PrayingandHoping · 10/08/2019 19:25

@reefedsail both the terrain and urban jungle are one hand folding. Very easy

stclair · 10/08/2019 19:29

I second (third?) the out n’ about nipper. I’m 5’10, friend had the same one, shorter than I and good for both. Doesn’t forward face but didn’t find that a problem. Found it easier to manoeuvre than bugaboo (had that for second child after airline had mutilated nipper) and used to use it on Norfolk beaches on holiday and also ran with it when in the mood.

TinyMystery · 10/08/2019 19:29

We have an Out N About Nipper Sport. It’s great on rough terrain and has been on shingle/pebbly beaches with no problem. It parent faces with h a carrycot but DS grew out of that quite quickly. I don’t love it being word facing but we use a sling a lot so it bothers me much less than it might do oetherwise.

aewwwenxt · 10/08/2019 19:43

I bought an orb all terrain. Haven't tested on the beach yet but have taken through a very overgrown field and it worked perfectly. Small basket that's hard to put things in/take things out of though so if that's something that will be used a lot I'd suggest something else. It spins on an axis so if you were in a tight spot but wanted to change which way they were facing ie in a restaurant it's easy to do so very quickly.
Doesn't come with a car seat but I believe you can buy one to go with it. I got mine from a mothercare closing down sale at way better than half price but when I bought it rrp was £450 so not too bad for a newborn to toddler pram I think.
