Second hand pushchair?

MaltedMilk88 · 02/01/2019 20:21

Hi all,

Looking for some advice if thats ok?

Has anyone bought a second hand pushchair? Not sure if I'm being too tight here but really like the look of the Bugaboo Chameleon 3 - seems so expensive!! & considering getting a second hand one, in near on perfect condition these seem to be almost half the cost?

Just interested in if anyone things buying this kind of thing second hand is ok or if I should set my sights lower and buy new?

First baby due in June and haven't got a clue!!

Do it! I was very happy with our eBay prom - was in great condition and saved us loads of money. Often people go a bit mad buying pranks that turn out not to suit their needs so you can often find them very lightly used on eBay/other selling sites.

piglet81 · 04/01/2019 15:24

Er, that should say 'pram' not 'prom' or 'pranks'... Hmm

TinselandToblerones · 04/01/2019 15:26

I think it’s bloody genius.

You can get it professionally cleaned up if you’re that way inclined but it probably won’t need it.

Round here you can get a nice bugaboo second hand for about a quarter of what they cost new

Hmmm, I've bought two pushchairs second hand (one a bugaboo) and have had a lot of problems with them. We have a week old baby and a 'new' second hand pram has broken on its third use. I'm currently trying to persuade DP to buy a brand new one so we have a warranty. Sorry, you can get some absolute bargains, I find ebay better than Facebook market place, but I'm a bit jaded with it.

whystay · 04/01/2019 15:35

Very sensible idea and you can always get it professionally cleaned if you want which will make it look and smell like new. I got everything new for my first baby and spent a fortune. Second baby came along and I've bought a lot of things second hand this time, wish I had done the same first time in hindsight.

I sold my Cosatto travel system to a nice lady who was over the moon with her purchase, it was in near on perfect condition (6 months old) and I made sure I gave it an extra deep clean before I parted ways with it, she was very happy and I was happy to put the money toward a Silvercross pram I preferred instead, I'll be using the Silvercross pram for my second due in 7 weeks too :-)

I also bought a second hand off roader running buggy for muddy/difficult terrain walks and jogging, it's scabby as hell lol but perfect for it's needs- prob the best £50 I've spent, couldn't have done some of the lovely hikes we've been on with DM without it..

As long as it's in good condition, clean and ideally from a smoke/pet free home it should be fine!

I have bought many! Not because any were problematic but because I was a bit addicted and curious about different models. I think in total I bought about 7 pushchairs second hand and 2 new ones. The second hand ones were much better buys actually. One of my "new" buys was a cheap travel buggy but it was rubbish, I should have bought a better model second hand for the same price.
The other one was a bargain and mostly fab, but the straps were rubbish and my son could pull himself out and pull the seat forward when I wanted him to recline. Even little details can be mega annoying on a pushchair as you use it so much/ so often.
I sold on some of my pushchairs or donated to charity, especially if I was too lazy to list on eBay.
I currently have 2 in use, both were second hand and cost £100 each, they would have been over £500 each new. They are still working really really well and I've finally sated my desire to try new brands so I won't be buying any more. I just found it hard to know exactly what I liked/ didn't like without an extensive test drive aka using the pram in real life, so buying second hand allowed me to do this.
I would highly recommend second hand. As mentioned you can clean them/ hey them cleaned. There are bargains to be had.

(The 2 I have now are a single and a double, Uppababy and Out n About - they get used daily: they have been abroad, in and out of the cars, used at home for naps and out for walks and my shopping. They probably were work horses for their previous owners too and now I'm sure getting my money's worth! )

Bought both a bugaboo cam and bee second hand!
I bought a new hood for the cam in the colour I wanted and it looked new!
4 years and two babies later they are both still going strong!!
Just make sure it's a smoke free home!

welshweasel · 04/01/2019 16:00

I bought a bugaboo cam 3 for £100. All the fabrics are machine washable and came up like new. The chassis I scrubbed down with hot soapy water then used some dilute bleach on the white buttons and they look nearly perfect. With my first baby we spent £750 on a new icandy, which we sold on after a year for £300, in excellent condition. I’d never buy new again.

Clottedcreamfudge · 04/01/2019 16:03

I’ve bought 2 Bugaboos second hand, buffalo and donkey. Both have been great. No way I could of afforded them new, so it was a decision between the one I wanted (buffalo) or what I could of afforded new. Loved the buffalo so much I bought the donkey without thought of any other double.

minipie · 04/01/2019 16:05

Yes absolutely sensible.

My only caveats would be

  • if you want 3+ children then it’s probably worth buying new as a second hand one may not survive that long
  • better to buy something locally where you can look at it first, if possible
  • second hand is better if the fabrics are removable (eg they are not on the Bugaboo Bee and Bee Plus) although if you will be using your own liner/footmuff this is less important
MaltedMilk88 · 04/01/2019 17:07

Thank you all so much for the replies and advice. Good shout to those who mention a pro clean, I definitely think I am going to try and hunt down a second hand one without too much wear 😃

@MaltedMilk88 best way to do it is to buy one through eBay or paypal, that way if it isn't as described or breaks within a short time you can get your money back, also theres a-lot of 'pram sellers' on eBay that sell bundles and already professionally clean the pram Smile

jessstan2 · 04/01/2019 17:25

Nothing wrong with second hand as long as in good condition, check over nuts and bolts and whatever.

Some charity shops sell them too, some don't because of safety regulations but those that do have someone to check it. They also steam clean them before putting in the shop.

Depending on where you’re based I’m about to sell my Bugaboo Cam 3 (full kit, grey accessories) less than 2 years old, very good condition. Can provide photos of course. If interested (and local to London) DM me for details

Makatoned · 04/01/2019 20:37

And have just seen I shouldn’t have advertised selling here, sorry! Feel free to report post
