Is carrycot apron really necessary?

Hi all!

We have got everything we need except for an apron for our carrycot. We have a Silver Cross Wayfarer and the aprons alone are coming in at around £100!! So much money for a piece of material!

Can I swaddle and wrap my baby and cover the top with a blanket? We do have a hood so he won't be completely exposed

Thanks in advance for your advice!

I'd never heard of one. I just wrap DD up to the shoulders in a blanket

SnuggyBuggy · 31/08/2018 12:06

Just googled them, I reckon you could just clip something over the top if you need extra cover

Pittcuecothecookbook · 31/08/2018 12:06

I just googled it and there are ones for £15 On eBay

JupiterDrops · 31/08/2018 12:27

Is that just what the zip up 'lid' bit is called?

I think they're necessary in the winter, they're nicely thick and so keep the heat in whereas most baby blankets have holes in for safety so won't keep baby as warm on their own.

PotteringAlong · 31/08/2018 12:28

My kids are 6,3 and 1 and I have no idea what a carrycot apron is...

villainousbroodmare · 31/08/2018 12:30

I'm sure you'll find one under £100 if you hunt a bit. Nice to have but really not necessary at all. A couple of blankets or a baby sleeping bag will do the job beautifully. All you want is to keep your baby cosy.

MysteriousQuinn · 31/08/2018 12:30

What on earth is a carry cot apron?

MysteriousQuinn · 31/08/2018 12:32

Oh ok I had a Google. Don't carry cots come with them as standard? Mine did but I never used it anyway.

ProseccoPoppy · 31/08/2018 12:32

There are aprons and hood and apron sets selling on eBay in a wide range of colours for £10 - £30. At that price I’d buy one as a nice to have.

RatRolyPoly · 31/08/2018 12:34

Never, ever used mine.

happymummy12345 · 31/08/2018 12:37

We had the silver cross pioneer. Ours all came together when we got the pram.
The apron is for both the carrycot and pushchair seat. The top zips off and zips on the carrycot. Then when you use the pushchair you zip it back together and put it on.
In theory you probably could get away with not having it. But I'm fussy and like a pram to look complete, hence why we had all the matching accessories for ours.

I have a Wayfarer- it should be included with the pram as part of the kit. I’ve never seen them sold without the fabric- it would just be a chassis. The apron for the carry cot turns into the foot muff for the buggy seat.

The £100 sets you see are for people who fancy a change- you get a new apron and hood in a different colour way to spruce up an older pram.

I had an October baby, and the apron was needed to keep the wind out, and was decently shower proof.

AvoidingDM · 31/08/2018 12:40

I'd say necessary to keep the wind out.

Yes carrycots used to come with them as standard.

Readyforapummelling · 31/08/2018 12:55

My wayfarer came with the apron included, where have you bought it from?

As pp mentioned, you can buy separate aprons in different colours to change the colour scheme of the pram.

smeerf · 31/08/2018 13:20

The apron comes with the Wayfarer and it is necessary in Winter. Absolutely.

expectantmummy87 · 01/09/2018 11:21

Hey all,

Thanks for the feedback!

I work for a large mother and baby company and this pram was in the staff shop. I am a newbie so didn't notice that the apron wasn't included. The problem is that I have a hood but no apron!!

It's midnight blue and all the single Silver Cross Wayfarer aprons on Ebay are lime...or raspberry!

I suppose that doesn't matter too much though as long as bubba is ok - he won't be complaining about the colour

Thanks!

There are sets available in sky blue or yellow for £30 here - which might tone in with the (very nice) midnight blue one (and you could put the spare hood on eBay to recoup some cost)

I'd actually say it is quite necessary. Even if it's not too cold, it's really good for when it's windy or even too sunny - otherwise you will just cover the carrycot up with anything and it surely will look worse than a lime apron for ex. Have three kids (and on the 19th pushchair) and can honestly say, an apron for a seat is not necessary at all (footmuff for winter is enough), but for a carrycot, it is better to have one (because without is, it is too exposed and the baby too small to be exposed).
