Pros and Cons of double buggies (tandem, twin, etc)

Hi there,

I'm pregnant and having my baby in December. By that time, my toddler will turn 3 years old. So I'm looking for a double buggy. I don't tend to like side by side but I'm open to any possibilities.

I'm looking for

  • lie flat option
  • easy to fold & put away in the boot
  • can go through doorways (this is a deal breaker if it doesn't)
  • Easy to push and manoeuvre, meaning it feels "right"
  • Seats to be comfortable and with enough room.

I know it sounds ideal but I've been looking around but would love to know by experience what people find positive and negative side of it.

I saw the Phil and Ted Voyager that I've liked, but not sure if second baby will be squashed once he grows up in the bottom seat. One of my worries is also the weight as my first child will be 3 years old so it has to give support.

Can you tell me your pros and cons from your experience from using double prams and if you have any that you would suggest?

Thanks!

Hiya, icandy have a pram called Orange that has a built in buggy board, the seat is big too, it comes with a seat and a cot complete so you can use it straight away with cot and either buggy board or the extra seat - it's a tandem so no doorway issues, john lewis also give a 3 year guarantee, so best buy from there. If you've more money try their peach also.

I’d always get an out n about nipper. The newest version.
It’s wider than most tandems but it’s the same width as a wheelchair so you could get it in most places.
Every tandem I’ve used has just been too heavy.

Money is not the issue. The main thing for me is that it has to be practical and easy to manouvre.

@Mol1628 I haven't thought about that. You are right if it fits a wheelchair then it has to fit the buggy. I'll try to search the general width and compare that with buggies to have a rough idea. I did hear that the cons of the tandem is that they are heavy.

@liamlunch I think I saw the orange the other day but I wasn't sure if it would be great for toddler + baby so I'll have a look and I'll see the peach you have mentioned to me.

Thanks both!

Have a look at a babystyle hybrid, if your toddler won’t be on board all the time you could have the carrycot up top and slot the seat underneath and just swap them round when toddler needs a rest?
