Best double buggy for newborn and 2 year old?

I am due in October and DD will be turning 2 in August so will need some double buggy ideas.
I do not drive so rely religiously on buses. One that fits on a bus without any problems would help! A lot of friends have suggested DD in her current single buggy and newborn in sling but don't fancy dragging a newborn out in a sling when it's freezing and raining in those autumn / winter months...
Also not sure DD would manage standing nicely on a buggy board as I walk miles with her most days.
Have always wanted one of those side by side ones but unsure if that would work on a bus and going through shop doors!
Also DD is a heavy girl (not sure on current weight) so I'm dubious about her being on the top seat, or would she be ok?!😂

I can't help but I'm going to be in the same situation in December and so want to see what others recommend.

@Afternooncatnap hope we get some suggestions Smile How old is your oldest and what date in December?

I've got the bugaboo donkey. Goes through normal
Doorways.
Obvs more annoying on a bus as it's a side by side but doable. I love it x

I've just ordered a Phil and Ted's sport with double kit and maxi Cosi adaptors for just under £500. Due no2 in July and have 16 month old. Hoping I've done the right thing. We don't walk long distances, but use pram a lot in and out of car boot, supermarket etc. Also wanted something compact for in town shopping. Phil and Ted's prices competitive in comparison to likes of bugaboo/icandy. Hoping one handed fold actually works. The other I looked at was an Oyster Max2, but I hate having to take the Venicci I currently have to bits every time I get in and out the car, hence Phil and Ted's because it folds with the main seat attached. Phil and Ted's most expensive three wheeler folds with the second seat attached too but I couldn't justify £700.

Uppababy Vista gets rave reviews. Again, one of the more expensive ones, but if you were starting out and planning to have more than one it might be the way to go. I always thought it looked great, roomy with two onboard and seemed to have a high handle which would be great for tall people.

I've been shopping this morning to look at all of the main ones. My thoughts from what I saw:

Mountain duet - side by side and very narrow and lightweight which was perfect but I was concerned at how narrow the carry cot was. Could imagine a newborn couldn't stay in there very long without being a bit restricted on movement.

Mothercare genie - great price but seemed a bit flimsy and eldest would be shoved in the bottom which i didn't like.

Nanu (think it's another Mothercare make) nice and stable and a better price but extremely heavy.

Bugaboo donkey - loved the way you could widen or narrow the handle depending on whether you were using it for a single, single plus shopping basket or double. Carry cot good size and fairly lightweight and very easy to manouvere. It was just too wide for my pathway.

Icandy orange - without doubt the best option. Still not cheap but it gave the most options in terms of where you put the children (which is good if you're concerned about a heavy one overbalancing the pram which is what I'm worried about) plus it comes with a built in buggy board so no need to buy extras. Was very lightweight and easy to fold up and compact.

Joie air twin - very flimsy although good price and narrow but I would only be happy putting older children in it not a newborn.

Joie duet - again carry cot seemed a bit narrow but wasn't a bad price and very lightweight.

I'm afraid I couldn't comment on the silvercross or egg (although this was gorgeous!) as they were way out of budget (as were most of them to be fair!).

Best thing you can do is find a shop which has them all there for you to try out as I had favourites I found online but in real life they wouldn't be practical.

Why not a use a sling until the winter arrives then try a buggy board, two year olds suddenly hate being like a ‘baby’ using a pram in my experience. I think if you invest in a double buggy you won’t get the use out of it you think you will.

DailyMailFail101 · 15/04/2018 15:42

YOu can get a little seat for the buggy board

PotteringAlong · 15/04/2018 15:44

Phil and teds sport here. Second hand off a Facebook selling site. Worked like a dream!

I had an uppababy in similar situation, (thought we’d have 2 DC super close) LOVED it for traipsing round London and on and off buses. Not easy to fold, but I would always get off for e.g. wheelchair and most of my routes were frequent-bus ones. In the end the gap between them meant that we didn’t use toddler seat but the buggy board - were still using this for long distances when 1st dc was 4.5.

Def not great for taking apart or in and out of car boots for me but god I loved it for London streets.

I’m in the same situation as you although slightly bigger age gap. I walk a lot and down country lanes so my 2YO will need to be strapped in at least for some of the walk. I’m torn between a silver cross Wave (prob second hand for me) I like this one because you can have toddler up front and baby higher facing me but it does look quite big. Or a babystyle hybrid... I’ve had a look at one of these and love it but if I’ve got both on board then the carry cot has to go underneath and face forwards.
