Buggy WWYD: 20mo and a newborn

Hello there

I'm expecting DC2 in October and have started to think about buggies. DC1 will be 20mo when #2 arrives.

DC1 is quite good on her feet already but I can't gauge if she'll "need" a pram in 5 months' time.

We presently have a Mamas and Papas Armadillo Flip XT full travel system (bassinet and group 0 car seat). It's in great condition.

Here are my questions:

  • will I still need a buggy for both children?
  • if so what double tandem) buggy would you recommend (I want baby to be parent facing)
  • have any of you heard of any kind of "trade-in"? Have any of your traded your single buggy for a double with the supplier?
  • or should I just attach a buggy board to the Armadillo Flip and just have DC1 get on with it?!

I just want to avoid any MASSIVE HEAVY truck like prams. We will be living in a city and I'll be getting on and off trams, trains and buses frequently.

TIA x

I have a 21 month gap and my eldest is currently 26 months. I need a double in lots of situations as I find carrying baby in sling and pushing a single too heavy and I can't trust my toddler to walk sensibly for more than a few minutes. If I going further than I could carry him in an emergency then I take the double. I also have a buggy board. He puts the buggy brake on repeatedly when he's on it Hmm

HeyCat · 09/05/2017 18:35

You'll need a double with that gap - your eldest will get tired standing on the board all the time, plus as they hit terrible 2s they're likely to run off, with two sometimes you really need to be able to pin the older one down in a buggy so you know they're safe while you deal with buggy.

I don't know of a trade in service but just sell your current buggy (local Facebook or eBay) and use the money towards the next one.

Mountain buggy duet is only 5/6 cm wider than most single buggies and you can add a newborn carrycot and have that parent facing.

Uppababy Vista with a rumble seat is a good buy then get the uppababy piggyback (buggyboard) once elder one doesn't want to go in pushchair anymore,

TheLegendOfBeans · 09/05/2017 18:53

This is all very helpful. If money were no object I'd be all over the iCandy Orange but OMGGGGGGG it's so expensive.

Anyone know anything about Britax or Baby Jogger models? They seem less ferociously expensive than iCandys etc on the second hand market.

I'd stick with the Flip, get a stretchy sling for baby and a full buckle carrier for toddler. Then can have one in pram and one carried.

NapQueen · 09/05/2017 18:57

The Armadillo is the best pushchair on the market imo. Could you sling the baby and use the buggy for dd?

camelfinger · 09/05/2017 19:00

We got a Phil and Teds with a 22m age gap (and still use it two years on Blush). Couldn't find one parent facing small enough to get on buses etc. But would definitely get a buggy, it was the only way I could get both to nap.

TheLegendOfBeans · 09/05/2017 19:01

I've thought about slings, I have a bit of a dodgy lower back and am likely to end up with a CS...

Daft question then - how old are kids when they actually don't want/need a buggy anymore?

Could you get a cheap second hand double just to have on hand and then once baby comes you'll be better able to judge what you need? My friend has that age gap and has a single with buggy board plus a Phil&Ted double, its not parent facing though. Also, definitely go to a sling library as there will be something out there that will work for you.

yikesanotherbooboo · 09/05/2017 19:08

I bought the cheapest double I could... it was terrible but it tided us over for the days when I was on my own and needing to walk/ shop for a while. I kept my single and held DC1 by hand or baby in sling and toddler in single buggy depending on the situation.... like you I couldn't justify spending much for the sake of a few months.. upside of wrangling with the double buggy ( my lifestyle meant quite a lot of walking , to shops/ baby groups etc, ) was that I got very fit!

Serafinaaa · 09/05/2017 19:10

Oh I have an Oyster Max btw and the top seat is suitable for baby and can parent face. My toddler stops the wheels when he's on the bottom though. He's a terror...

Xmasbaby11 · 09/05/2017 19:13

Double buggy with 24 month age gap. Total life saver. Couldn't run after toddler either baby in sling! Toddler wouldn't have stayed on buggy board at that age. Depends on the toddler of course but we used it for a year or so when dc were 1 and 3.

We had Phil and Ted's. Easier to push than some single buggies!

Xmasbaby11 · 09/05/2017 19:14

Both my dc were in buggy til 3 and a bit. They loved their buggies!

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 09/05/2017 19:14

Graco Ready to grow and the Joovy Caboose Ultralight (not the standard cheaper one as it's apparently hard to steer) are ones I'm looking into buying, they both have a small back seat that has a step if they want to stand up as well.

Buggy boards are a pain to use getting on and off public transport in my experience.

MiniAlphaBravo · 09/05/2017 19:22

It's not parent facing but I have the joie double buggy which has a little window through the hood that I can see through. Its also the narrowest double you can get but still awkward at times as all doubles are I think... but a lifesaver for me with a bigger gap than you. I just use it for trips to nursery or when I'm on my own and no chance for toddler to get on dh shoulders if tired

kel1493 · 09/05/2017 19:25

My son is 20 months and still needs his pram when we go out. So based on that I would say you would need a double yes.
Sorry can't help on which ones are best as never needed one it known anyone with one personally.

littletwofeet · 09/05/2017 19:28

Icandy peach? Similar to orange but older model, you might be able to get one quite cheap second hand. Can parent face, takes up same size as single, can use with just one seat when needed, lovely to push.

Baby jogger city select - I found quite big and hard to push up and down curbs.
Baby jogger city mini double GT is lovely to push but doesn't parent face (apart from with carry-cot) and is side by side.
Maybe go to John Lewis and test them out then look for the one you want second hand.

I still used pram with mine until over 3-I had good walkers but they used to nap in the pram or used it if went out for the day somewhere like the zoo where I couldn't rely on them to walk the whole day. Was handy if needed to get somewhere quick/if raining/if they were messing about, etc.

Frazzled2207 · 09/05/2017 19:38

I had a 20 month gap.
I had an uppababy vista which was really easy as I bought an extra seat to attach to it, it was fairly unwieldy tbh but ok for the relatively limited use I had with it.
I think you will want to consider a "proper" double unless you won't actually walk that much in which case you may get away with a buggyboard. Or putting baby in sling- I did this a lot in the first 6 months.
I considered buying a double babyjogger (which I see out and about a lot) but didn't in the end. But the single (which I got cheap on ebay) was a brilliant investment, you can push it with one hand which means you can hold older child's hand when they walk.
Older son is now nearly 4 and rarely uses the buggy the major exception to that is the nursery run which is about a mile on a short timetable. The other good thing about the baby jogger city mini is that it works from all ages from newborn to 4ish whereas my eldest had been too big for the main seat of the uppababy for ages.

TheLegendOfBeans · 09/05/2017 22:29

Yeah, we will be walking loads. The more I think about it a sling really isn't an option as I just know that it's not a long term solution.

Have consulted with DH. Whilst not as pretty as the iCandys the post made by @thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter has given us serious food for thought re Graco and other "foreign" brands Grin

Ps: I'm going to be living in "foreign" parts too by the time DC2 arrives so literally ALL suggestions are welcome 😂

I had a 21 month gap between my two and we needed the double for about 6 months before DD1 could use a buggy board.

We had the Out and About 360 Nipper v4. Fantastic double buggy and would highly recommend it, especially if you can pick one up second hand.

BeansMrSeanAndHeinz · 09/05/2017 23:26

2yr 3mo gap here, double buggy gets used daily 6 months on. We got a Hauck Duett 2 secondhand on eBay - wish I'd known I was going to have two kids so I could have bought it at the start instead of the Wayfarer!
Fits on the bus, folds down into a small car boot, love it.
