1 pushchair from birth till done?

Evening all, were expecting first baby in October and just starting to investigate all the bits and bobs we need.

Is it a feasible request to get a single system to cover baby's entire pushchair requirement?

If so what should we be looking at based on recommendations?

Cheers

Hello,

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the products mentioned on this thread aren't available any more. We've spent weeks speaking to parents and testing prams and pushchairs, from lightweight easy folding prams to all terrain buggies, we've seen them all.

Here's our round up of the best baby pushchairs on the market right now.

Hope that helps! Flowers

Absolutely. We have the Uppababy Cruz. We used it with the carry cot or car seat when she was younger. She's now nearly two and we hardly use it as she wants to walk everywhere, so it has done her from the start to near to the end and is still going.

We did get a cheap umbrella fold for taking on planes last summer but we didn't real need it. It just meant we didn't have to worry about the Cruz getting trashed or trying to cram it in hire cars with all our luggage.

We have a Graco travel system, perfect up until Mr Independent decided just before he was 2, that he would quite like to walk thank you! Using it again now with dd1 and will use it again as and when we have another bub

Lots of love for my Stokke Xplory here. Had it for five years now, two children, you can put a newborn straight into the seat but we did buy the carrycot set for it. It's a bit of a tank (and doesn't fold up particularly, but we don't have a car to fit it in!), but I love how high up the baby sits, and the runner board worked a treat for my son when my daughter came along. I know some people swap buggies a lot as the child grows older but nothing would convince me to part from our Stokke!

Another maclaren xt fan here. I'm on my second, as the first was stolen! But got it for fifty quid on eBay, now over a year in to the second child with me, it's great.

ColintheCrow · 03/06/2016 21:12

Maclaren XT Techno did all three of mine from birth until finish. Light and fit easily into my small car. Loved it.

Portobelly · 03/06/2016 21:32

I have an emmaljunga pram/pushchair.
I'm beyond thrilled with it.
I walk a lot.
It has good suspension.
The bassinet was plenty big. So my 95%ile boy was in it til six months.
The seat lies back fully, and is sturdy. It has a leg/foot rest that is adjustable
There is even a seat for a toddler that can be added over the bassinet when you have a second child.
It has a big storage capacity
The seat can face backwards or forwards,

It will be rubbish if you are mainly car drivers, but if you walk and take buses and trains it's ace.

I have another lighter buggy, but that feels so flimsy. And curbs are much harder

KP86 · 03/06/2016 21:36

Bugaboos (except donkey) all have nice compact frames. I don't like that the chameleon seat (don't know about bee) doesn't lie flat. It's too structured and legs are higher than bum when lying down.

I have a City Mini 4 wheeler, which I think is fabulous and have already bought a 2nd hand carrycot for when we have #2. It can be used without the carrycot and lies flat. One hand fold is pretty awesome.

If you want to be able to travel with it, an umbrella fold is easiest long term and most compact. But not many are supportive enough for a newborn. However as long as it lies flat you can get a newborn cosy type thing to sit on the seat and it will be fine.

Go try some in a shop, stick a 10kg bag of stuff in the seat and see how it steers.

Bugaboo Cameleon did us from day one til done. Blessed beast it was Smile plus I sold if for more than half what paid for it. Loved it and would highly recommend.

BeckyWithTheMediocreHair · 04/06/2016 12:13

Depends how big your child is, too. DD is on the 98th centile for height and although our joolz day was otherwise excellent she had outgrown it by 2, when we still needed a pushchair for long walks. A child on or below the 50th would probably be able to fit until 3yrs. We did better than our friends with a Bee, however - their similarly sized DS outgrew it at 18months.

lljkk · 04/06/2016 12:14

I wore wheels out on mine, so would be false economy.

timeforheroes · 04/06/2016 12:28

I think it depends how much you will use it day to day.
With DS we had a travel system, but as soon as he was too heavy to be lifted out of the car in his car seat and onto the pram, we bought the Urbo2. Loved that pram.
When we found out we were pregnant with DTwins, we sold the Urbo2, got DS a Maclaren umbrella fold as he always wanted to walk. We got the Bugaboo Donkey and used it whilst the DTwins were little enough to lift whilst in their car seats. Ended up selling it about a month ago and got the Joie Twin Aire, easier to fold and handle on my own.
Umbrella fold strollers suit us better as if we use a car, so it's not like I'm having to walk everywhere with the pram. It's used once we are at the destination. Feel like for that reason o don't need something all singing and dancing.

Every time I bought a system, I intended to have it last, but for practical reasons (for ourselves) strollers have always won once the babies were old enough.

ISpeakJive · 04/06/2016 21:34

Definitely the Bugaboo Bee. Not built like a tank like some others, incredibly nifty and has seen me through with two children from birth to about 3.5 years old (and only because they wanted to walk everywhere after that).

Miffyandme · 04/06/2016 22:10

If you might be thinking of having a second fairly soon, there are some buggies that can fit a second seat in the long run, yet equally function as a single.
Having said that, I didn't plan ahead, I think it might have felt like "counting my chickens" but I'm happy that my bugaboo will have good resale value.
I walk a lot locally with a bugaboo but keep a really light buggy in my car to use if toddler tires, in which case baby can go in sling.

Pigeonpost · 04/06/2016 22:12

Our Phil & Ted's sport is still doing the job nearly 8 years (and three DC) later. We do have a cheapo umbrella fold which I used to keep in the car for the school run though.

MeAndTheMajor · 04/06/2016 22:26

Another vote for the Bugaboo Bee. We're nearly at the end of the pushchair years but it will have served us well by the time it is retired from service! We've used it for two kids (at once at times with the buggy board on the back) and would buy it again in a shot.

NotCitrus · 04/06/2016 22:38

If you don't drive much nor go off-road much, the McLaren XT is great for public transport from birth. Though mine died when dc2 was a toddler after 5 years of 2-5 miles a day. Only regretted it when doing a mum&baby exercise class on grass...

jo2107 · 09/06/2016 14:53

We've bought the Moutain Buggey Terrain (do lots of walking, there are other urban models)
Baby due start August and the pushchair reclines flat for new born, has a big basket and should last until 4-5 years old :-)
For short trips we have the adaptors so can attach the car seat instead of using the main pushchair section.

captaincake · 12/06/2016 22:40

I have a baby jogger city mini gt. You can put the car seat on it, a carrycot, or lie flat in the main seat but that's not parent facing. DS is 2 now and it has been one of our best buys. It's brilliant. There is a big height difference between me and DH and the adjustable handlebar is great, it can be used on all terrain and is a dream to push/steer. The fold is very easy too so great for being in a rush throwing it in the boot of the car. It's flown on two holidays with us now without being in a travel bag and it's fine.

DrRanjsRightEyebrow · 12/06/2016 22:44

Loved my baby jogger city mini GT. Worth the extra for the GT version

MummyMaisy · 13/06/2016 12:09

For all 3 children, we only used one pushchair each, but then a more grown up one, for when they were mainly walking... We have gone through 6 in total, but they were all amazing!

LittleElephant123 · 13/06/2016 12:18

We use the Chicco Urban. It's a great pram. We used the baby car seat with the chassis until LO was around 12 weeks then she got bored of lying down not being able to see much so put her into the pram part. She's nosey so didn't like lying down but we were able to elevate her enough to see. The pram turns into the buggy too so it's really handy only having the 1 bit for pram/buggy. Now she's 5 months. And is forward facing and loves it.

The only down side is the wheels if they had rubber wheels it would be 100% perfect. But tbh now she's in the pram it's not so much of a big deal.

I live 3 floors up so had to carry pram up the stairs and it isn't too heavy. Can't bump it up the stairs because the way the brake is

Only1scoop · 13/06/2016 12:19

We bought a Stokke xplory used it all the way through.
