Best 'off-road' Pushchair??

Itstime222 · 25/04/2015 06:42

Hi,

We have a Uppababy Vista which we absolutely love. However we spend a lot of time walking the dog with our 5 month old and wanted to get a more 'off road' pushchair to go with it. Just literally for taking around the countryside so the little man isn't quite so 'shaken up'!!

Does anyone have any advice on which would be the best one to look at? I'm thinking inflatable tyres are the way, but are there some with more suspension etc that are better. Needs to be able to deal with roots, grass, sand all sorts really! We are VERY outdoors people!

Any help would be much appreciated. He is just progressing out of the bassinet into the stroller seat thing, so we think now is prob the right time...

TIA :-)

Have a look at the Mountain Buggy Terrain. Built by same company as Phil & Teds, it's a 3 wheeler built like a brick shithouse and is amazing for running (we bought it as a running pram) but is great on grass, country walks, beach etc. Great sun shade, huge big inflatable wheels and sits up/lies flat. Only thing is it's massive, we have an estate car but usually end up strapping it to the roof rack, if you have a 4x4 with a large boot you'd be fine, I feel it's big for taking it into shops/ cafés and stuff but I've seen others with the same buggy doing that.

Wellwhaddyaknow · 25/04/2015 06:55

I'd recommend the baby jogger city elite. Folds up like a dream and our little boy is super comfy in it.

SweepTheHalls · 25/04/2015 06:58

Mountain buggy or out now about nipper. In fact I have one if those if you want to buy one second hand!!!!

PurpleDancingTurtle · 25/04/2015 08:10

I have a second hand nipper for going through muddy fields. It's brilliant. I also have a icandy peach jogger as my main buggy which does a lot of dog walking but it's much heavier than the nipper.

Itstime222 · 25/04/2015 08:11

Brilliant thanks - the mountain buggy looks like exactly what we need. Do you happen to know how old they have to be to go in it or how small the straps can go? Can you fit a car seat to it if not? Looks brilliant :-) We have a 4x4 with a huge boot - although it is shared with a big dog!! :-) Would definitely be interested sweepthehalls- whereabouts are you? I imagine the postage would be rather expensive!! Smile

If I had my time again and money were no onject, I 'd get a Mountaim Buggy. Having said that I'm very happy with my Out n About Nipper 360.

Itstime222 · 25/04/2015 08:42

Soooo by the sounds of things it sounds like I have 3 options - the mountain buggy terrain (probably the dearest one), the baby jogger city elite, and then finally the cheapest which is the out n about nipper 360. Oooooo so which one shall I go for? Is the Mountain buggy enough better to warrant the price? It also seems as though you can put the car seat in the mountain bugger and the baby jogger but not the nipper - is that right? Thanks for all your help - I really didn't have a clue when I logged on this morning!

I know you said pushchair, but…..Manduca? I run a sling library and get loads of people wanting a more practical solution than a pushchair for walking the dog.

Abzs · 25/04/2015 08:49

We have an Out and About Nipper Sport. Goes any where except in shop lifts (too long). It's very light and easy to use, but is quite big when folded. I preferred it o the Mountain Buggy ones.

OhHowILoveMyPuppies · 25/04/2015 08:54

I have the Kidzmotion Bambini Tres Verdi. Took a huge risk buying it online because I'd never heard of the brand and there was only 1 (positive) review.

It's had loads of off-road and town use for the past 2.6 years and I couldn't be happier with it. Huge hood, large basket, lie-flat carry-cot, rain cover, and pushchair part lies flat too.

It was well worth the risk - £120 all in, brand new.

CharlesRyder · 25/04/2015 09:02

I'm surprised nobody has said Baby Jogger Summit XC. It is amazing. Fits a carseat. One hand folding (super easy). Wheels pop off really easily meaning you can get it in a small boot. Absolute dream to push. I loved mine and my friend saw mine and bought one a week later!

CharlesRyder · 25/04/2015 09:06

Having re-read your OP I would REALLY recommend the bigger back wheels on the XC/ X3. Makes such a difference to sand/ mud etc.

Lyttelma · 25/04/2015 09:11

I had a mountain buggy terrain and a smallish hatchback (Mazda Demio) and had no problem whatsoever fitting it in the boot. It's an awesome buggy, and easy to steer/push. I converted my sister with one outing from the horrible expensive 4-wheel thing she had.

We took it through forests, over beaches, through mud etc.

They also make a smaller buggy (urban?) which has a front wheel that either rotates (apparently useful in town) or locks. It has an adjustable handle - good if people of different heights will be using it.

Mountain buggies come from NZ - they make 'em tough!

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 25/04/2015 09:14

No recommendations re a specific buggy, but definitely get self-sealing tyre treatment if you do go for real tyres. Brilliant invention, it means you don't need to repair small punctures, you just reinflate them & go!

Writemove · 25/04/2015 09:18

We have the maxi cosi Mura 3.
It's a three wheeler with amazing suspension. It's great for dog walking.

Because it's maxi cosi, the maxi cosi car seat attaches really easily but the seat is good too.

The tyres are designed not to puncture and it's really robust. Big, but not too big.

My ds is 18 months and we still use it for dog walks (have a maclaren stroller for streets).

Itstime222 · 25/04/2015 09:24

Ah they all look really good as well - looks like I have some research to do.

I cant seem to find the Kidzmotion anywhere Ohhowilovemypuppies - any chance you could post a link.. I saw a post from someone else wondering about it as it was so reasonably priced. Its bad that when something isn't ridiculously expensive we all question how good it is!

The X3 and XC look great though and a really good idea telephoneignoringmachine.

I take it basically the bigger the wheels the better. Would explain why the vista cant deal with it!

fruitpastille · 25/04/2015 09:28

Love our nipper - got it on Gumtree for 45 quid. I wouldn't worry about the car seat, they will be using the buggy long after outgrowing the car seat.

SignoraStronza · 25/04/2015 09:30

I've found my (£90 ebay bargain) P&T Sport more than up to the job. It is the one I use for going round the village and through the fields and has also survived a few very muddy festivals.

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 25/04/2015 09:34

We have 12 inch tyres on our buggy, it copes with the extremely uneven cobbles on our high street very well. Buggies with small wheels often cannot cross the cobbled areas at all. We have also taken it along the canal & in the woods, both very uneven. IMHO you need at least 12 inch wheels to cope if you are thinking of proper rural walking. I would not consider anything less next time if we are still living in this sort of area.

lentilpot · 25/04/2015 13:04

I was looking for kidzmotion but could only find the recall notice? www.plymouth.gov.uk/safeguarding_alert_-_product_recall_24-04-13.pdf - thought i would share!

SweepTheHalls · 25/04/2015 22:55

I'm in Northants!

mistlethrush · 25/04/2015 23:00

We had (ds is now 10) a MB urban. The swivel wheel (then) fixed for very rough terrain - although, despite it being used on long dog walks, we rarely needed to fix it. We never fixed a car seat to it as it laid flat and we used it for DS from 3 wks, with added blankets etc when necessary. When he was bigger he used to love going down steps without the front wheel being picked up so that he really bounced down them all. Sold ours to another MNer who wanted a buggy for dog walking.
