Holidays and pushchairs.

I'm going abroad next week and have really struggled to find a stroller to take. I bought one but then realised it didn't have a hood so couldn't offer any shade.

I have seen some others but the reviews are pretty poor. I don't want to spend a fortune as it's only for holiday but nor do I want a cheap flimsy pushchair.

I've got a silver cross pushchair that I use for my every day use and I'm actually considering just taking that. I would be worried about it getting damaged in cargo though.

Has anyone else just taken their own pushchair?

Or can anyone recommend a cheap pushchair that would be suitable?

a) what's your idea of 'cheap'?
b) could you just get a clip-on sunshade for the one you already have?

I had a basic (own brand) from Mothercare (the cheapest with swivel wheels) and it did have a hood. That was years ago, but they probably do similar. It lasted for years of holidays, and then went on to another family.

Airlines usually let you take your pushchair to the gate. The only yine I have ever flown eith a pushchair it went in the passenger bit.

iwantgin · 31/03/2015 08:43

Just buy a parasol or sunshade that you can attach to a cheap lightweight buggy?

It's a long time ago now, but that's what i had when I took DS away.

This sort of thing sunshade

Whether it goes into the cabin depends on type of aircraft, how full the plane is, and how many other people are trying to take pushchairs on.

You'll certainly be able to use it up to the gate. But they might take it round to stow in the hold at that point. And then, depending on arrivals airport, you might not see it again until the carousel (you can only get it back at the side of the plane in pretty small airports IME).

Just check the weight of your silver cross and the airline policy. Last time we flew we had a limit of 10kg for car seat and pushchair together and our maxi cosi plus uppababy vista came to much more than that!
We bought a maclaren quest for holidays and to be honest I wish we'd just bought a really cheap one. It's flimsy and annoying, and the sun shade is rubbish. Id just get a clip on parasol for the stroller you've already bought if you don't want to take the silver cross.

I've always taken a holiday stroller as also have been worried about getting a decent and expensive pram damaged - the airline won't always accept responsbility and claiming on insurance seems like a pain - also if there's an excess of £100 it woudl generally be cheaper to buy another stroller to take to avoid the potential that cost anyway! Do you have a friend with a decent stroller who could lend it to you? - I had a basic mclaren for my older two and was happy to lend it out. Otherwise I would just go with the inconvenience of a cheap, flimsy one for the sake of a week or two - much less hassle than dealing with a broken pram in the longer term.

Mutley77 · 31/03/2015 08:47

Also how old is your child? A bit different for a six month old vs a child nearly 2.

HazyShadeOfWinter · 31/03/2015 08:47

We take ours on holiday and it has not been damaged but it's pretty scuffed up anyway so I wouldn't notice extra scuffs.

It's also a one piece so easy to fold at the gate etc.

Most cheaper strollers don't have good hoods ime, could you get a snooze shade to fit the cheap one you have? Excellent sun shade plus darkens the pram if you want to take it out to restaurants at night. Does depend on age of dc and their willingness to keep shade on of course.

Thanks everyone, my DS has just turned one. I hadn't thought about getting a parasol, sometimes the most obvious answer is the one that doesn't even occur to you Grin

I might have a look at the Mothercare website too.

I saw someone mention they took their car seat - can I ask why? Were you hiring a car at the other side or do we have to take them 'just in case'. We have got transfer transport booked to take us from the airport to our hotel and just imagined we'd have DS on our lap?

It was me, we always hire a car so take the car seat Smile

Writerwannabe83 · 31/03/2015 10:24

I've just googled our destination and apparently, by law, all babies have to be in car seats even for hotel transfers.

Our car seat is massive!

I can't bear the thought of lugging that around the airport Sad

Yeah we've got the same issue this time, it was fine with the newborn seat but the next stage one is huge.

Writerwannabe83 · 31/03/2015 11:28

My DH is going to ring the transfer company and see if they provide one. I hope so!! The transfer transport is a coach though so I'm not sure how that works?

We are going to ring the hotel too and ask if they provide car seats should we ever need to use a taxi.

OP posts:
Ionone · 31/03/2015 11:43

You can check the car seat in.

iwantgin · 31/03/2015 12:21

Many coaches don't even have seat belts- so i don't know how they expect you to use a car seat.

I'd definitely double check that one.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 31/03/2015 12:46

Sounds like you have booked with a holiday company if there's a bus transfer? I would make the car seat their problem as they have to abide by local laws.

I've hired a pram locally which was handy as nice and sturdy with good shade. Expensive to do it regularly but pfb was only 4 months and I wanted a lie flat

We bought a snoozeshade I think they are called for a maclaren quest. It works fine and is easy to attach and gives good coverage.

Cupoftchaiagain · 14/04/2015 20:55

You can probably still get your one year old in the infant seat safely, check the weight limit and whether his head is above the seat back. I know they r a pest to carry about but u can check it as soon as u get to airport and if u have coach transfer u r prob not moving luggage about much.
Plus u can use it as a chair in your hotel room

Cupoftchaiagain · 14/04/2015 20:56

You get 2 free pieces of baby equipment e.g. car seat and pushchair on most flights
