Travel system carrycot mattress universal?

Hi, first timer and totally clueless so sorry for asking stupid question but... Are the mattresses that come in pram carrycots universal? I've been offered a travel system by sil but it's a few years since they used it so I was thinking of replacing mattress - don't want to ask in shop in case I get talked into buying new carrycot... (Unless that's advisable?)

The car seat part of system is primo viaggio, from mamas and papas, but I'm not 100% about the carrycot, haven't got it yet and don't want to ask sil too many questions and sound picky.

M&p website have a couple of mattresses but can't see what they're compatible with, so wondering if mattresses are universal fit?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Sometimes they are the same size as a Moses basket mattress... But definitely not all the same size. Looking at my friends' pram carrycots they are definitely not all the same.
This place will custom make a mattress for you to any size though and they aren't mega expensive so may be worth it if the travel system is going to save you lots:

Oh I don't think you'd need a new carrycot unless it's been stored somewhere really damp like a garden shed. You'd smell it if it was mouldy even if you couldn't see it.

Thanks Molly, I think it's been in their loft so will see what it looks/smells like and have added that website to favourites just incase! Much cheaper than I thought they would be, thanks for link.

I was going to buy new system but second hand where safe will stretch the savings to stay off work a bit longer :)

Definitely- I promise you will be glad of getting second hand stuff at this end of the new baby journey when it means more time off work at the other end of it. Especially once baby has dribbled / puked on things you realise that brand new does not stay looking that way for long at all!

I've just stripped and washed a carrycot, you should be able to get the covers off and put them through the washing machine. The mattress is just foam, I'm going to get a new one from that website as well.
