Holiday stroller for a stroller hater

Help me pushchair fans! I have a vista which I like for everyday use (walk everywhere) and a Baby Jogger Summit which I love for off roading and running with. We live in London and I normally use a sling on the tube or DD walks (she's just 2).

We're planning a holiday to Malaysia in May. Previous trips abroad I've just taken the sling, but she's getting less keen on that and it will be very hot and humid so it'd be good to have a pushchair. She also still naps and would sleep in the evenings while we had dinner (jet lag permitting!). There will be internal flights as well as the international ones plus trains and busus.

So I think we need a small, light stroller but I do want it to recline.

I hate strollers! Too fiddly to push and rattly.

Budget isn't an issue but I would want to sell it afterwards, especially if it cost more than £150 ish. I'd prefer 4 wheels.

So far the shortlist is:
A Maclaren
Babyzen yoyo (expensive but good for the plane)
Uppababy g luxe (good sunshade)
Micralite supralite (better to push?)
Graco evo mini

If 3 wheels theb maybe oyster gem or citi mini zip.

Help!

City mini zip has 4 wheels. Reckon you might be able to take it on the plane too given the size it packs down to and that it has its own bag. Plus it'll sell on eBay well as it'll be so new.

The recaro one and the mountain buggy nano? The red kite Zumi is also pretty good, it's cheap at cheerful end of things but very functional.

glorious · 17/02/2015 18:46

Ah right, must've got confused on the zip, will have another look thanks. Good point on resale too.

The mountain buggy is a good thought. A bit worried by lack of shade potentially and the fact that while it's v small it's not actually certified hand luggage size as the yoyo is. But will look into it in more detail.

Is the recaro this one? I guess it's lighter than a reclining Maclaren and folds smaller. Has anyone pushed one?www.babyboom2000.co.uk/pushchairs-prams/recaro-easylife-stroller-various-colours/?gclid=Cj0KEQiA6ounBRCq0LKBjKGgysEBEiQAZmpvA5l10x-6he4fRlI3fNZV3IVP_cDDLnOvmvebwq-8lqsaAvvD8P8HAQ

Will see whether I can find a zumi to play with somewhere local too.

Can you take DD to a toysrus and choose one? You can get away with a very cheap one at this age and she might well be happier to use it if she's chosen stripes or peppa pig or whatever...

NishyM · 17/02/2015 20:09

ICandy raspberry is a bit more expensive than those mentioned but I bought mine with holidays in mind: faces forward and away and you can fold it with the seat in any position which I figure will help when we're rushing between flights, plus it lies flat for sleeping

Ihateparties · 17/02/2015 20:28

I get you re lack of shade but that's solveable with an add on if the rest of the buggy is right. The Yoyo is brilliant, the nano is a little heavier to push I think but I haven't personally tried it. The easylife is okay to push, definitely better than a twin handle option and it's very light.

I'm having a word with myself about getting a city mini zip, I'm hearing so many good things about it. I think out of everything that would be my choice, even though it's probably not cabin sized like the yoyo.

glorious · 17/02/2015 22:25

seriously that's probably what DD wants to hear Grin I'm too concerned about a cheapy being heavier to carry and push though. I don't want lugging it around to be a chore. Currently DD has no idea such things exist and I'd rather keep it that way!

nishy the raspberry has a lot going for it as a practical main pushchair which also does travel but it's too big and heavy for me as a solely for travel purchase, especially for such an active trip where we'll be on and off various kinds of transport for nearly 3 weeks. Lovely though!

parties that's really helpful on the pushing front, thank you. So maybe the recaro for cheaper, the yoyo for tiny or the zip for resale/all round good option. Tricky! Think I'll seek them out and see what they feel like

Oh and good point on the shade, though DD hates rain covers etc with a passion so anything particularly inprovised would probably get jettisoned!

My vote is for Maclaren Techno XT - reclines almost flat for nap, sunshade unzips and extends right over for extra shade, breathable mesh sections for the hot weather. It has been away abroad with us countless times, still going strong for 3rd child and its in perfect condition still.

glorious · 17/02/2015 22:54

*improvised. Can't type today.

A friend hasa techno xt. Good to hear it survived travel well. It is bigger and heavier than the others though so I'm not sure whether it's worth the weight for being a bit more flexible e.g. for a newborn and a bit cheaper than some on the list.

OP posts:
glorious · 17/02/2015 22:55

Shade and mesh do sound perfect though.

OP posts:
Manic3mum · 18/02/2015 10:51

You are right it is a bit heavier but then I reasoned that meant it was less likely to break when it gets thrown on and off a plane and on the luggage carousels! This has held true so far!

glorious · 18/02/2015 17:35

True, very true. Which is one of the attractions of the yoyo which we could actually put in the overhead locker. But if going in the hold that's certainly important because arriving with a broken one would be very irritating! We could pick one up over there of course but I'd rather not have to.

I got a city mini zip as a small folding pushchair and really like it, my cousins son has one and she loves it! Says its so easy to use and lovely to push

glorious · 22/02/2015 10:28

We went to Peppermint in Clapham yesterday to try out a few things.

The nano feels a bit sturdier because of the wider wheelbase at the back and the shade is actually fine. But the fold is noticeably lumpier as well as bigger.

I wasn't that keen on the harness on the yoyo as it felt quite flimsy. But loved the fold and with the shoulder strap it was so practical. One just went for £205 on ebay so resale is good.

We also played with a Maclaren quest which was just massive in comparison and I think would end up getting left at the hotel as I can't imagine lugging it around when DD walks.

Might wait to play with a zip or might just go for the yoyo Smile

I am also umming and ahhing over zip and yoyo! Doesn't help that I can't find either irl. Does anyone know if jl have the zip in any of their stores?

GoMommaItsaBargain · 23/02/2015 14:11

I'd get the babyzen, saw one in my big mother care other day, amazing to push and fold and perfect for planes, trains and buses, I hate pushing strollers (hand ops for carpel tunnel make it impossible although I love the sturdiness and easy fold) the yo yo seemed fab and my large 13 month old had plenty of seat room. I took a micra light to Disney last year (super push and brill with wheely board which we needed) but the airline wouldn't let us take through to gate as too bulky folded, I looked with envy at all the people wth babyzens...... Both in Disney land and the airports!!!! They are perfect for small spaces and as your baby will be walking about a bit?? Then the babyzen super easy to push one handed while you hold her hand, room in basket for sling just in case you want it and maybe take an extra large muslin to chuck over hood for shade and coziness if she's asleep.

Plateofcrumbs · 23/02/2015 14:21

I've been researching this as well and was also watching the same yoyo on eBay! Plus planning a trip to peppermint to try out. I was kicking myself for missing out on a micralite which went for peanuts on eBay but I think ultimately the ease of portability of the yoyo sounds like a winner.

glorious · 23/02/2015 22:48

I am so tempted!

mumble I was wondering that but haven't asked. It does say online exclusive on the site.

Funny you were watching it too, plateofcrumbs

Have you looked at the nuna pepp? I just got one from pram world for £89.

It isn't an umbrella stroller, so easy to push and steer one handed. I don't like the rattliness of strollers either, but this is so much strurdier, and sleeker looking.

You pull up two clips at the side and the stroller folds in half. You can then pull it along by the handle like you would a wheelie case so good for travel. Plus it folds up small, would fit in a car footwell.

It has two recline positions. The basket isn't very big but easy to get too.

glorious · 25/02/2015 17:32

I saw that bargain, looks good at the price and I like the wheelie case idea but I think the yoyo has me smitten now!

glorious · 01/03/2015 13:46

[coughs] got a yoyo. It's brilliant! I love the push, it's nice a springy and deals with our bumpy pavements and even grass without breaking a sweat. It's obviously not as smooth as the summit but it's pretty good.

I only got it on Friday afternoon and it's already been folded on a bus and up a spiral staircase at church so that DD could sit in it while I sang in the choir. How did we live without it?!

OP posts:
Mumblefireplace · 02/03/2015 13:45

I've ordered a zip and a yoyo - I'm going to choose one when they arrive and send the other back! I'll let you know how I get on.

glorious · 02/03/2015 19:30

Ooh mumble I was tempted by that, but tooften impatient. Do update us!
