Bloody uppa baby vista/need a double buggy for big toddler

We invested in an uppababy for DS when he was born 20 months ago, as we knew we wanted to have another baby soon and you could add a rumble seat.

We never checked weight (or even thought it would be an issue) but now we will have our second baby in the summer and i have gone to order the second seat attachment and see it is for 'up to 15kg' which by my calculations is 33lbs - which is what DS weighs now.

So does that mean we can't convert it? If so it's bloody useless to us.

Does anyone know if there are any other buggies which we can use for a baby and a big toddler (baby will be big too).

I haven't used one but Tiggy, who has used pretty much every double under the sun said the rumble seat is one of very few things she would not use past the stated 15kg weight limit. I'm not sure precisely why she thought that though. The vista is an awkward newborn toddler buggy anyway due to there being no lie flat option for the baby, only car seat or bucket seat.

So you need to stick with a tandem? Side by sides can be simpler for heavier children, bjcm double, bjcm gt etc. Fwiw dc1 was 98th centile, I expected the others to also be huge but it didn't happen but I guess you have to plan for it.

NatashaC24 · 28/05/2014 21:36

A bugaboo donkey, can take 17kg in each seat which is about an average 4 year old. A phil and ted navigator can take up to 20kg in each seat depending on the configuration if second seat is on the front then it can take 20 kg but if the second seat is on the back like your uppababy it can only take 15 hope that helps :)

Ihateparties · 28/05/2014 22:30

Ah there we go, the navigator is one tandem that could definitely work. The oyster max would probably be okay too.

NatashaC24 · 28/05/2014 23:06

Oyster max can only take up to 15 kg in each seat :/ other wise would have been a great choice, but phil and teds maybe the way to go is you prefer the one up one down configuration :)

MrsKoala · 28/05/2014 23:07

17kg is an average 4 year old Shock i anticipate DS being that when he's just over 2 :(

I'd better look at the Navigator. We love the vista tho. I don't drive and walk everywhere and it's really robust with a big shopping basket.

BUGGER!

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it. I may go off and cry now. That bloody vista cost more than our car.

If you work purely on the official 15kg then there will be very few options, which is totally fine if you only feel comfortable doing it that way. It may be worth looking at tested weights in other countries on certain models as they vary, US testing is usually considerably higher than UK but then again the type of testing is different so I guess you weigh it up what you feel is safest/best for you. Realistically lots of children use pushchairs beyond 15kg and not limited to those with officially extended weight limits like p&t, mountain buggy etc.

AnythingNotEverything · 28/05/2014 23:44

Bugger? Really? We bought a Vista for the same reason. That's really annoying!

What's the youngest age the new baby could go in the rumble seat? Could you sling/buggy board until then and put baby in the rubble seat and toddler in the main seat? Sorry if that's a stupid suggestion ...

Ihateparties · 29/05/2014 00:13

You could, I think technically it's 6m.. From memory, I could be wrong. It's very very upright though so naps could potentially be a problem.

hedwiggity · 29/05/2014 01:06

The Obaby Zoom looks good it has a huge basket and can accomodate the toddler seat and a carrycot more than easily unlike some others that squash in a carrycot below. it can also take maxi cosi car seats and the seats can face each other so your DC's can look at each other and chat the seat unit is from 6+

TitsCrossed · 29/05/2014 01:15

I have an enormous toddler, we went for the BJCM gt double and it is great, very stable. Ds is 18kg/102cm tall and even with him and newborn dd it handles well, easy to steer one handed. I used it with a carry cot at first for dd. My research at the time showed this was pretty much the only option for a tall toddler.

TitsCrossed · 29/05/2014 01:16

(The gt model accommodates a taller child than the standard model)

MrsKoala · 29/05/2014 08:36

AnythingNot - i think we could put DS in the Rumble seat till DC2 is 6mo (hopefully wont be much over 15kg by then - and i'm not going to be too precious about the exact weight) then swap them over and get a board too.

We have a BeSafe car seat, so if we bought another buggy, we'd want one which fits that. We really can't afford a new buggy tho, that's the reason we splurged on the vista. Just didn't expect a monster baby/toddler Confused

I have both vista and navigator, have to go out soon dog/child walking but will be back to give you my considered opinion!

If you have a big toddler I wouldn't get a navigator. Tried one out in kiddicare and the seats are really small.
When you have the second seat on top then your toddler has no recline. My friends dd who at the time was 18 months and on 2nd centile for height/weight nearly filled the seat.

onedogatoddlerandababy · 29/05/2014 10:53

Right;
Uppababy - rumble seat is small and very upright, it's also very slippy, only the straps kept dd in place when we tried it. She thought it was hilarious though. There is no way to fit it with the bassinet nor with the seat fully reclined, not that the seat is suitable for a newborn either.
You can use it with the car seat for the baby, but depends on how long you're happy to have your newborn in the car seat. I do long dog walks as well as use the car so wasn't an option I was happy with.

Navigator - has been brilliant, really comfortable ride for dd, she refused to get into the vista after being in the phil&teds. She is fine in the double seat still up front, she is now 28 mths and on 50th centile for height/weight (about 12kgs at the moment).
DD2 is now almost 5 mths, 75th centile and is not happy in the lie flat position anymore, so am about to swap the chairs round. However, she's not yet sitting, and often sleeps on our walks so I'm a bit stuck at not being able to recline the main seat with the double seat behind.
DD1 is also now getting fed up of having to be in the seat and wants to dwardle walk everywhere, so...I have now just ordered the piggyback board for the vista.
She can fit on that for walking along roads and then can be free elsewhere and DD2 can be reclined in the seat. Plus I get my massive basket back!

They have both been brilliant but useless at certain points. Agree if you can get a side by side it will be much more versatile. And should do better recline/lie flat options.

So, vista wins on sunshades, basket, size of bassinet, better brake pedal, non puncturing tyres, easy up and down big steps, better suitability for the ages I now have.

Navigator wins on newborn/toddler stage (admittedly a tiny part of their lives, but I couldn't have done without it, mine don't mind a sling but for 3 hrs a day...no) easy to fit raincovers, comfortable seats, the newborn bit is cosy, dark and flat - she has slept brilliantly in it, except for when she has just got too big.

Navigator is lower/slightly smaller, more adjustable handle but you will get punctures, but is very light to handle, though getting it up big steps and balancing it on one wheel up and down kerbs as been a bit trickier than doing the same with the vista.

Both have been fine over fields and through floods. Actually the vista's front wheels really gathered up the mud and leaves on the towpath and needed clearing which the navigators don't.

On balance (and all being well with the buggy board, it's the vista I'll keep long term). I think Grin Blush

Sorry for the essay! My advice is to go and try them both in varying position, kiddicare and John Lewis have both and the rumble seat available to try.

MrsKoala · 29/05/2014 15:03

thanks for all the info.

i've had a look at the phil and teds and while it looks good, i'd never be able to justify spending the best part of £700 on it after we spent the same under 2yrs ago on the vista.

i think i'll just have to struggle with the big toddler in the vista. :(

onedogatoddlerandababy · 29/05/2014 15:14

£700 wow, nooo, you should be able to get it cheaper, mine was ex display in John Lewis for less than £450 with the doubles kit. Kiddicare also always have offers...

Plus check eBay, I think that's where I'll be selling mine, I think there's a pretty good resale market for phil&teds.

MrsKoala · 29/05/2014 16:16

I just had a look and it appears it retails for about £450, the baby attachment thingy is and extra £57 and the extra seat when the baby is older is £120. Not including rain covers and gubbins. Is that not the case?

OP posts:
onedogatoddlerandababy · 29/05/2014 16:45

We got the cocoon for £50 but it only lasted us 3 mths (useful as she was winter baby plus we got it as a gift) but you don't need it. I now use the main seat fully reclined with the seat cushion laid on it, there is velcro on the end and on the back of the double seat so it kind of all tucks in and makes a nest, you can also strap in your newborn (take a look at the instructional video on YouTube).
Double raincover was £25. Ours came with the double seat already.

Amazon have it at the moment with double seat for £389 Smile

Ihateparties · 29/05/2014 17:36

If you do decide to change pushchairs do look at other things as well. There are lot of options out there. I agree 700 sounds like a massive amount for a navigator, even a v2 with the deeply annoying weird hand break set up...

MrsKoala · 29/05/2014 17:55

Cheers onedog. That looks a better price! i think we need to go and try some out. i'll look for our nearest suppliers.

Might sell the vista if we like the phil and teds better. We really don't have room for 2 buggies.

OP posts:
spottydolphin · 29/05/2014 18:08

keep an eye out for offers. the navigator was £358 inc double seat a while back in kiddicare. that's why i was looking at it. my friend and I went in convinced we were going to be buying it, but walked out with a b-dual instead!

onedogatoddlerandababy · 30/05/2014 09:05

We don't have the room either, the vista has been in the boot of dp's car for months! Am so glad now that we didn't get rid of it as once the buggy board arrives I'm going back to the vista. so long as dd1 doesn't escape from it when I don't want her to
