Pushchairs - is maclaren techno worth the money?

We need to get a smaller buggy for being out and about in town, travelling etc. the maclaren techno looks great but I'm not sure we can justify £185 when we already spent a fortune on our travel system. Will a cheaper buggy (i.e. £60 ish) work just as well? Thanks in advance for any thoughts xx

Why not get one second hand?

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 30/04/2014 08:06

A Maclaren is never a bad purchase Grin

They are absoloute workhorses and will outlast any other umbrella fold.

Second hand would be good if budget is tight.

Oh and dont feel bad about the travel system - everyone goes for an umbrella fold eventually!

We bought the techno xt when my dd was 6mo as our travel system was huge and awkward getting in & out of the car. I liked it because it felt much sturdier than the other strollers I tried. Looking back now she's nearly 2 it feels a bit like a luxury stroller and prob more than she needs. However it's good quality, comfortable, has a great recline, tall handles and is easy to steer. The hoodcomes right ddown too so with full recline they arev well ccovered. It is a bit heavy to get in & out of the car still (though much better than the speedi)

I think for us it was the right option and I'll prob use it earlier if I have more dc. I think it justifies it's price but go for a cheaper one if your dc is older or you want something really light & easy.

I have the techno too. Think mine is the classic. My boys are 10 and 7 years now and it's still going strong! I don't put them in it but I load it up for days out.

I originally got it as I wanted a pushchair that completely laid flat (ie suitable from newborn) as I knew my DH would probably prefer it when DS2 came along.

Look for second hand techno. I used mine from birth, miles a day, loads of abuse bumping it down steps etc, and it lasted 5 years - handle covers disintegrated and brake finally failed.

I got a Silver Cross Pop which is similar but hugely inferior, seat flops forward, all held together with Velcro, etc. Though the handles are lovely and it has a cup holder, and I only paid a few quid.

I hated our XT, it felt rickety, the handles went sticky, the recline was clunky, the legrest was useless, the seat was narrow, the brakes were a joke and the suspension was non existant.

AliceMum09 · 30/04/2014 14:31

Yes, worth the money! It's a bit bulky though, more of a 'main' pram than a 'second' buggy. I had one, but swapped back to the smaller Quest. I do miss the extending hood on the Techno though!

A friend has a Techno Classic, currently being used for her 4th baby after being bought 8 years ago.. The handles have rubbed down to show the white rubber but everything else about it looks pretty good. They are well-made.

I hate my XT! I hate pushing the two handed thing. It's reallyu hard work pushing a largish toddler in it. However it is still in excellent condition seeing we have used it for 2 years. the only problems with are cosmetic eg I placed a hot dog on the hood and it's made a mark.

rockpink · 01/05/2014 07:40

Yes its worth investing, as you could re-sell at a later date. I sold mine when it was 3 years old and got £60 for it.
Absolutely adored that pushchair and wish I hadn't bothered with travel systems and rear facing types, I should have used it from birth.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 01/05/2014 07:45

I hated my XT too. Hate the two handles. Really hard to push, especially with a toddler. I went with Manas and Papas pushchairs and have never looked back. I got my Luna off ebay for £20

unintentionalthreadkiller · 01/05/2014 08:07

I hated ours too, we had a loan as a holiday buggy and it was horrible, heavy, clunky, difficult to steer.
