OBaby Zoom tandem vs Baby Jogger City Select (double tandem)

Wiggy29 · 15/11/2013 08:39

From what I can gather these are the main pros/ cons for each:

Obaby= cheaper on ebay, long, only use as a double, seats level
Baby jogger- can be used as single, shorter, seats not level, more expensive

Does anybody have any experience of either of these? Many thanks in advance.

If you want to have a look...

The zoom has a bad reputation for quality issues, although I have read on here at least some people are happy with them. No similar issues with the select but it can be very heavy to push and turn, particularly in certain seat combinations. People live with this for the seating options. There is also the brevi ovo twin but I have never seen one or seen a used review.

Wiggy29 · 15/11/2013 11:00

That's interesting, especially as I'd be buying second hand so if there were any issues with quality wouldn't be able to return it to a shop. Will look up the other one you mentioned, cheers.

It's worth bearing in mind but it is only what I have heard, not first hand experience.

Trying to think of other similar things on the second hand market, you sometimes see kolcraft tandems, they are similar to the zoom. No idea on quality/reliability.

The select would be the safest bet on that front.

Wiggy29 · 15/11/2013 12:05

Yes, I think you're right. Handy that it converts to a single too. Thanks for the advice. Had a look at other one you mentioned but unlikely I'll find second hand & would rather go with one I'd heard positive reviews on.

Baby jogger every time! It is a fabulous pushchair, flexible, easy to fold and to put together. Good sized seats, sturdy but not too heavy.

The only down side I can think of is that it is cumbersome with two older toddlers in it... I had my then 3yo DS and 4yo DNiece both asleep in it during a very long day at an outdoor show. It coped admirably with the rough terrain and scottish weather, but was bloody heavy by 5pm! We parked them and had a coffee Wink

At first it would be for 20month plus newborn. Not sure how you feel it would be for that age range?

I would be comfortable pushing upto a 2.5 to 3 year old and a younger child together and would expect the older child to begin to walk short distances after that anyway.

It really is very easy to push and steer, comfortable and adjustable. I like that the older child can be forward facing while the infant lies parent facing. Although that's just one of many options.

My two DS and DN loved sitting facing each other to chat and play games.

It's a great buggy for the outdoors and is narrow enough for aisles in shops and doorways. It can feel a bit long in some of the positions, e.g. If the front child is reclined, parent facing I feel their head end is a bit exposed. So I make sure to arrange them differently indoors. With adapters, it is also great for an infant car seat on top and one sitting in front. Lots of options.

Can you find them locally and go for a look/test drive?! As a single it is lovely to push so when your eldest is walking, the little one will still be able to use it independently. The shopping basket is enormous too.

I'm pretty sure I saw them
In John Lewis, going to check on their website now...

Other tandems are definitely far lighter to push, turn and tip (icandy peach, apple2pear, oyster max, jane twone etc.) but they don't have the seating options. If you want the adaptable seating in tandem format though then the select is probably your best bet.

I have the Select and I love it. I liked that you could get a bassinet for a new born so they could lie completely flat and now my two are 2 1/2 and 12 months they are both in the seats. I like the flexibility of it too, as you can face the seats anyway depending upon whether both children are in it or just one. It is quite heavy however, and I have to have my older child at the back or I just wouldn't be able to get up and down the Kirby! However, the wheels are sturdy and it is easy to push and manoeuvre. I got a second hand one and then bought a bassinet new. I have had good use out of it and hope to sell it one when the time comes as they seem to retain a decent price even second hand.

Kerbs.... Not Kirby!

Defo going to go for City Select. Out of curiosity, what would you guys think was reasonable to pay for one second hand (would need two seats and bassinet), assuming it was in reasonable condition?

Wiggy29 · 17/11/2013 20:21

killpeppa- that looks like a good budget option, will see if it's on ebay. Liked the idea of new baby being parent facing but will certainly check this out.

The Zoom and City Select aren't that dissimilar in length.
I echo what I know about the quality issues of the Zoom. The warranty is short and O'Baby charge even to look at the pushchair from what I understand, and then charge more to do any repairs.
The City Select does get very heavy, very quickly. I had a 21 month gap and it lasted me 9 lovely months until it became painful to push. Lighter tandems are definitely the Apple 2 Pear and Oyster Max.

wiggy.

Wiggy29 · 21/11/2013 21:33
