which pushchair for a newborn????

hello, im new to mumsnet and my first baby is due at the start of april. i am completely bamboozled by the array of prams and pushchairs out there and could do with some advice. i would like something that is suitable from birth, i dont drive so it needs to be ok on public transport but also chunky enough to deal with off road as i spend a lot of time walking . i dont have a fortune to spend on one so £350 would be about top if possible ( car seat need not be included) . would it maybe be better to go second hand for this price? i feel very clueless about this, please help :)

Do you want a carry cot included ? I found a carry cot v cosy for my autumn babies, but maybe not necessary for a summer baby, bearing in mind they will be outgrown within 6 months.

i think maybe the option of adding a carry cot would be nice (i live up north, its always cold here) but does not have to be included in the price above

How off-road does it need to be? I don't drive and walk everywhere but mostly pavements and shops so for me it just needed to be durable!

i think it would have to be ok on muddy footpaths but nothing too extreme.

^ I second that. A normal versa may also do the job. It's not particularly small but would prob be okay for public transport. I measured my britax b motion and that's 56cm wide and very robust. Carrycot and carseat options. Only downside imo is it's not that easy to steer, ie not one handed and no parent facing option beyond the carrycot stage.

The Baby Jogger City Versa is parent facing, but if you weren't fussed about that you could go for the City Mini, which would be lighter and they are really quick and easy to fold for public transport (with baby still on your other arm). The GT versions are like off-road versions.

Or there's the Britax B-Agile which has a similar folding mechanism but again it isn't parent facing. And have a look at the Mountain Buggy Cosmopolitan, although I'm not sure how easy that one folds.

Best bet is to write down some possibles and then go into somewhere like mothercare and try them all out folding and unfolding etc.

The Versa GT is bloody marvellous and at £283 is fantastic value (carrycot and car seat will still be extra though). It is v sturdy and durable with semi-off-road tyres, but if you don't need that capability you v might find a normal Versa (non GT) even cheaper. Alternatively have you looked at the Mutsy Ivo?

I have the Maclaren xlr.with carrycot (am a fellow Northerner!) and love it. Carrycot for the first few months and is lie flat stroller after that.
