Newborn and 15 kg 2.5yr old, side-by-side or tandem?

I thought I wanted a tandem and like the look of the Oyster Max and Peach Blossom, but they have 15kg weight limits and DS will already be that weight when the new baby arrives. He still naps and I can't see him dropping his nap for a bit yet.

I know Phil and Teds have higher weight limits but I'm really not keen on them (probably unfairly). Would I be better going for a side-by-side? Or does a bit of extra weight not really matter in a tandem?

It depends on the tandem, imo the ones you mention are probably fine with some extra weight but strictly speaking i suppose they would advise you not to. They being the manufacturers and retailers etc. What about a tfk joggster twist with buddyseat or a mountain buggy +one? As your elder child is that much older they may not seed a permanent seat for very long relatively speaking.

Agree with what parties said, also what about new nipper double? Side by side with very good weight limit, think around 22kg per seat, I had one with first two dc and it was my all time fave buggy double or single, pushes itself fully loaded! I know isn't a tandem but the new version is narrower than the one I had a couple yr ago and I never found a door I couldn't get through with that at 77cm, think they are only 72 now, my two were 4 and 2+ When I felt I didn't need it much more, used to walk a load and they had naps in day very happily then could still run about for longer after etc. loads storage on them also.....I am sorely tempted for dc3 but dd2 will be nearly 3.5 when dc 3 arrives so wouldn't get a year out of it really......am going for a phil and teds......see my thread re the new navigator, check out their website, it looks fab, may sway you even if not I to p and t currently! Looks super versatile, love the rear face option of doubles kit ( good for me when dc are at school/pre school and is just me and baby then have option of two seat when I have the toddler plus baby....one of the dc 1 or 2 will prob love the freerider also....
Rear weight limits.... If you ask the manufacturer they should tell you what the buggy is tested up to kg wise, usually it's more than 15kg even though they sell them for use to 15kg, I found this when I emailed micralite, the said was tested to 18 so used one happily with a 15kg and growing toddler.

I'll check out those suggestions-thanks. I agree DS will not need a permanent seat for much longer, he'd already rather be walking. I'll need a double for a bit though for days out/tiredness etc. The downside of the tandems that convert to a single that will suit >15kg, is that they're often not great as a single seemingly. So once DS is no longer really needing a ride, I'm left with a not-ideal single.

I'm thinking maybe get a side by side to start with for the first 6 months, then reassess. If DS is rarely in it, I could then sell it and get a great single and buggy board.

Do tandems pull to the side a lot if you've only got a newborn in and the toddler's got out to wander about and look at sticks or whatever?

Miaow I agree, nipper was so so easy to push! I looked at the new one in a shop today and dd2 hopped in, she looked v comfy to my surprise, thought she would look big but oh no!!!! Now am unsure again, still love the p and t but the nipper would be great for at least first 4 months, is t that long though and would be pushing with empty seat a lot, maybe a bit odd especially when dd2 at nursery but ideal for the trek there and back and the additional trail to school x2 a day for dd1!
More- good idea, use for 6 months or however long it's useful for then sell on and move onto a tandem or fab single plus wheely board then, arguably the p and t comes into it's own when youngest can sit in back seat (from sturdier 4 months in my experience..just!) and the big main seat free for older child to hop in and out if tired.....when they not tired and u know they wort need a sit then put youngest in front and use back seat for emergency tired toddler (careful with weights but prob ok) and bags/shopping/general kids stuff.
The nipper def doesn't pull to side with only one child in, really is an amazing push, my dd2 is a whopper of 19kg and it pushed today in a shop with poorly inflated tyres with one hand like she wasn't even in it!
I had been tempted by mountain buggy duet as v narrow I guess good if eldest walks a lot, feels more like pushing a single but handy to have a seat of them I totally agree, seats sometimes better the wheeled board even if just a few months until they really don't need it, also you can remove a seat from the duet and attach a storage bag thing instead, looks great, slightly lower weight limit, I think.....but don't quote me is combined load 36kg any where u like over buggy where as the nipper 22 per seat ie 44 combined, of course a newborn and toddler, even a 19 kg variety like mine would be fine in either! I guess bit more leeway with nipper, p and t is 20 main seat and 15 in doubles kit behind....would prob still use for short rides to rest my toddler if baby in front. It's not like they in there any great length time that age, and once youngest big enough to sit in back (which is often before the 6 month mark) then toddler fine up front.
Sorry for essay there! Am completely pondering same dilemma .....may have to wait until month baby due and re weigh the toddler, she gets worn out from nursery (and combined with lack desire to nap much more) a seat may really be handy for ease of getting out the darn door for nursery/school run even if only a few months.....with dd1 and when dd2 was baby my dd1 would set off walking and hop in when tired and out when rested, no hassle in that respect with nipper, she could climb herself and it didn't discourage her from walking ifykwim.

Can you get a carrycot for the Nipper?

OP posts:
GoMommaGo · 03/10/2013 21:07

Yes carrycots are available for the single I think,,,,,and soon the double as well.

MrsMarigold · 03/10/2013 21:14

I also have a nipper and used it with my newborn and my DS, I like it more than my single pushchair and find it easy to steer, however the only advantage is if you load the back with loads of shopping it can tip over. It's a bit of a pain to fold but it is light and you can go on buses with it too. Although if I had my time again I might go for the baby jogger double. Also storage underneath is a bit limited but I like it.

Had a look at a friend's Nipper today, the basket does look a bit small, but lovely to push. I've had a BJCM for DS, which has been incredibly practical for us. So I suppose the sensible thing to do would get the BJCM double really. But they are very...practical. I kind of want to get a Donkey, but they're so huge folded.
