Using a pushchair carrycot for daytime naps at home

Hi,

I'm planning to get a bednest for my main crib, plus a Moses basket for the living room during the day. We don't have much room though, and I'm trying to save space, so I was thinking of using a pushchair carrycot for the living room instead of a Moses, as I'll need to get one anyway. It would be one less thing to fit in the flat.

So I'm about to buy either an Uppababy Vista or a Graco Evo, partly because I've been told, by Mothercare and John Lewis, that their carrycots are suitable for use at home (they both have stands that go with them). But now I've just seen on a website that the Graco carrycot is only ok for 'occasional' sleeping.

What do people think about this idea? Has anyone doubled up like this? Would it be safe & comfy enough?

Thanks

I have a quinny speedi and use the carrycot all the time for baby.I really wouldn't bother with a moses basket to be honest.

You often can't avoid babies sleeping in carrycots during outings so daytime sleeping imo in most carrycots would be fine. Very few are approved for night time sleeping as the required standards are different. I forget precisely how. If you're limiting yourself to these two models on this basis then there is really no need to.

Why do you need a stand? Just use the chassis it's on and apply the brake.

Ihateparties: thanks, that's reassuring. And I'm keen on those two anyway!

LadyMacbeth: I hadn't even thought of that. Good point Smile

We used our bugaboo carrycot for daytime naps and overnight (as recommended by the midwife) it meant we had our babies familiar bed wherever we were and I am sure it made him a good sleeper. Friends have the stokke pram and are currently doing the same.

There arent that many carrycots which are approved for overnight sleeping. Bugaboo's arent for example. However, carrycots are ok for daytime napping - thats really one of their functions. The difference is that during the day you are deemed awake and vigilant to your baby ie nearby. At nighttime, you should hopefully be asleep. The differences in summary are to do with the height between the mattress and the top of the carrycot ie to prevent a baby falling out, and also to do with whether the carrycot sides are solid or fabric (which is why Bugaboo's are suitable here in the UK as they have fabric sides). I haven't looked it up, but my assumption would be that the solid sides of the Stokke carrycot are approved for overnight sleeping? But dont take my word for it.

You do need to read whatever instructions are with the carrycot though. All are obviously fine to use on the pushchair chassis, but I know iCandy for example ask for carrycots to be placed on a hard firm surface rather than a stand. Dont assume that because a company sells a stand - and even promotes it for overnight sleeping - that their carrycot is approved for overnight sleeping! I believe though that both the Vista and the Graco Evo carrycots are approved for overnight sleeping - but I have only done a quick search, so again dont take my word for it.
