Buying pram once baby is here - bad idea?

We have decided on buying the uppababy vista but can't decide on a colour.

We don't know whether we are having a boy or girl and like the blue for a boy or cream for a girl. Are we mad to wait till baby has arrived? We are going to buy the car seat so we can bring baby home from hospital and OH can go to a local store and buy pram which they keep in stock or may have to wait a week at most for delivery.

I can't see me pushing a pram with the baby in for the first week minimum anyway so don't see this being a huge problem but would like opinions
Thanks

As long as they can guarantee you won't have to wait long for it to be available, someprams can take ages to get stock.

I would buy a sling so you can use that if you want to go out, just for a little walk etc so you don't feel housebound.

Wishfulmakeupping · 10/06/2013 21:14

Yes you'd be surprised how long you may need to wait ours took ages

changechangechange · 10/06/2013 21:18

Totally fine if you've got a just-in-case sling.

Otherwise - you may well end up just wanting to stay snuggled up at home with your new baby for days/weeks on end (I did), but you also might not, in which case you'll want something.

5madthings · 10/06/2013 21:19

Oh and where will baby sleep in the day? I used my carrycot on my bugaboo at home, it was easy to put baby down and they were safe in it in the living room if I nipped for a wee etc. As long as you have a moses basket type thing instead it won't be a problem but I did find it handy to have the pram tbh.

Plus getting it before baby is born means you have time to put it all together, get it set up and practise folding it down, attaching carrycot/car seat/seat etc. Just generally working it all out, I wouldn't fancy trying to do that and dealing with newborn....some,beers cursing getting the covers onto my pram when I was overdue with ds4!

chocolatemartini · 10/06/2013 21:24

As long as you have a good sling and a car seat, I could've got by without a pushchair for 15 months, DS preferred the sling and once I'd found a good one so did I. now I'm a total pushchair addict though and I haunt the pushchair board on mumsnet like a hungry ghost Make sure you go on the sling section for advice if you haven't already, not all slings are created equal! And some of the more popular ones are awful. So I'd say yes fine to wait for the pram

xmarksaspot · 10/06/2013 21:28

If you buy cream then have another baby that is a boy or vice versa is that ok?? Second children don't have pfb status I would buy the one that could do either !!

xmarksaspot · 10/06/2013 21:30

And what do you put baby in when you go to buy the pram??
(I could not get on with a sling!! )

chocolatemartini · 10/06/2013 21:37

xmarksaspot did you have a nice comfy sling like a stretchy wrap? With a small baby I'd say there is no contest, pushing 7-10 kg of metal around or having a snuggly cuddle with lots of head smelling and kisses. As I said, around 15 months I did finally concede that pushchairs have their use Wink

5madthings · 10/06/2013 21:42

I used a Moby wrap and loved it, very easy to use and lovely and supportive :)

MrsLianeB · 10/06/2013 22:13

Thanks for all the advice, we have a Moses basket and a cot already but would use the carrycot off the pram once baby (and pram) arrived for naps during the day.
Had not considered a sling before but will have a good luck round. Plus if we do go out before the pram arrived it would just be to visit family in the car so would be in car seat anyway I suppose.

I have this sling which I love.

Both dds used it (dd2 still in it at 13 months), but I appreciate that not all babies like slings. Dd1 was definitely not as keen but dd2 loves it.

I love it because the wide shoulder straps really distribute the weight, even now with dd2 being 20+ lbs, I can carry her for hours with no discomfort.

I realise that doesn't help your pram buying dilemma, but if you are looking for a sling, I highly recommend it.

Ha.. wasn't an icandy cherry was it, I never got the car seat off that sucessfully.. always involved a lot of wrestling and some swearing.

I LOOOVE love love my Uppababy Vista and my LO is 20 months and we're still using it. However, it took a long time to come in, so check with the people you're going to buy from to see if they can get it quickly. We used the pram bit as a bed if we were staying anywhere or if she fell asleep and there wasn't a cot available.

This doesn't help really but we didn't know the sex so we went with a yellow one. I think it might have been limited edition so might not be available anymore?

I personally would not go for cream. It looks lovely but even the yellow one got mucky quickly so I can't imagine a cream one! You're going to really be thankful for the massive basket underneath. I know I am!

So, yeah, check availability, ours was a 14 week wait.

We have been back to visit the vista loads and have had a long play with them plus adapters so we're ok with putting it up and down and we have checked out stockists some have them in already some 1 weeks wait so hopefully all good.
Thanks for all your advice it has been a big help although I may have to rethink the cream though!
