Pushchair for a TALL toddler?

My DC2 is tall! He's 18mo and when last measured was nudging the 90th+ centile for height and is comparable to a friend's son the same age who was measured recently and was off the chart.

DC2 is especially long in the body, so straps are a problem.

A couple of months ago we chopped in the Bugaboo Bee because his head was pushing through the hood and his feet were at the end of the Footmuff. In its place we got one of the £200-odd Maclarens, not sure of the exact model except it was pricey for a Maclaren.

We wanted it because it reclines flat (good for naps) and is more robust as it gets daily use for the school run with DC1

Except that DC2 doesn't fit in it anymore! His head is at the top of the seat now and pokes over the top when reclined. And his feet are at the end of the Footmuff. The straps won't do up, even extended. He is not at all chunky, just tall.

Is there any pushchair/buggy out there that will accommodate him? I really want one that reclines as he often naps in it on the school run, but am I going to have to give that up and just use a Maclaren without a Footmuff? In which case, I'll sell the new/expensive one and dig out our battered old Sport/Quest from DC1!

Hello,

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the product recommendations are a little out of date. We've spent weeks speaking to parents and testing out strollers and buggies. Here's our round up of the best lightweight buggies available to buy now

Hope that helps!

I would go and find somewhere that stocks Baby Joggers and try him in a City Mini GT (not the standard City Mini), the Elite, the Versa and the Summit. Even if you come away and buy one second hand, I would be very surprised if he doesn't fit into one of those pushchairs (the GT you will have to open the hood by one leaf but the seat underneath is tall). Try also the Britax B-Agile, and consider a Kiddy City 'n Move if you like a stroller.

Thanks for the replies!

We have departed the land of Bugaboo....had a Cam for DC1, Bee for DC2, now both gone! Besides, the Cam won't fit in my car now I have the two DCs!

From the reading I've done so far, the City etc look like the best options. Unless anyone knows better?

Nope just another vote for anything by baby jogger - if you can cope with an off roader the Elite seat is enormous! And it's so easy to steer and a dream to push. I also have a GT which is also great but in a smaller package. Seat almost just as big. I had exactly the same problem my 16 mo is really tall so wanted something that would last him xx

I have bought a Nipper since I last replied and my 4 year old was out in it today (threatening a meltdown after a long outing and DH insisted on shopping for Mothers Day - she told him to go shopping and she would stay in the car!! Not quite the plan, so I persuaded her by riding in my new pushchair and it worked). It was easy to push with her in and she had plenty of room. Her legs were a bit bunched up but shes tall well over a metre. She loved it.

How weird, my 99.6 centile 20 month old still seems to have loads of room in the Bee and its footmuff!

Ihateparties · 09/03/2013 23:32

I thought that too Soloman I think it must be a proportion thing as I've seen loads of very much older and taller kids in Bees and Mac XTs along with all kinds of other pushchairs that still fit. My dcs are definitely differently proportioned to eachother so it's possible.. seems odd that the Maclaren straps won't do up for an 18month old though as they are known for carrying up to 4 year olds.

Are you sure the bee is adjusted enough?

We just used a bee+ abroad with 3 year old and he seemed fine ( doesn't usually use a buggy, is it top % for age blah blah)

Tiggywunkle · 10/03/2013 00:25

Was it a Bee or Bee+?
My 4 year old looks great in the Bee+

Micralite fastfold/superlite is fantastic for tall children
