Stokke Winter Kit

I'm wondering if it is worth buying the winter kit for my Stokke pram. My LO is 13 weeks and we're usually out every day for a walk. When we return I normally leave her in the pram in our back garden. However, it has now been below 0 degrees during the day for 6 days (we live in northern Scotland). I've not felt confident about her sleeping outdoors with temperature so low.

The winter kit would insulate the pram but it costs £200. Last winter it rarely dipped below freezing but the two previous years to that were cold (minus 17-20 one winter). How likely is it that this freezing weather will continue? Is it worth the outlay? WWYD?

You shouldn't be leaving her outside in the pram, winter kit or no winter kit. Why can't you take her indoors if she's asleep?

There's nothing wrong in theory in leaving a baby to sleep outdoors in any weather except fog and stupidly low or high temperatures.

If its that cold and you are concerned, then take your newborn baby inside with you!! I am sure you wouldn't like to be left outside in such cold temperatures! If the pram doesn't fit in the house, then carry your baby in your arms and put her somewhere safe!!! All the winter kits in the world aren't going to stop your baby from freezing if its going to get down to minus 17!!!!!!!!! Please use your common sense....and if you insist on leaving your baby outside, then I jolly well hope you are sat next to her outside too, keeping an eye on her until she wakes up.

i do hope you sit next to her in a tshirt in the freezing cold to make sure she is fine outside in the cold, you stupid woman, what are you thinking, get her in doors in the warmth, sorry but why the hell would you leave a baby out in the cold in her pram, while you are sat in doors in the warmth :O

13 weeks old?
And you're leaving her outside in freezing temperatures?!
why?!

Please tell me this is a wind up...

FriggFRIGG · 08/12/2012 00:00

Oh,and WWID??!
I'd bring my newborn baby inside with me,to sleep in the warm.

StrawberryMonkey · 08/12/2012 07:36

I would save my pennies (not buy the winter kit for £200!) and bring the baby indoors where you can keep an eye on it.
Definitely do not leave a baby out if the temp is as low as minus 17 (or even -10!). The trouble is, a baby suffering hypothermia will likely go into a deep sleep and pass away quietly without noise...the first you would know is when you go to fetch the pram indoors again. It's absolutely not worth the risk is it.

I think you've not felt comfortable leaving the baby outside in low temperatures to sleep because your mothers instinct is ringing alarm bells in your head...deep down you feel it's not a good idea. You know it's not right. Listen to your instinct.
Is somebody advising or pressuring you that you should leave the baby outdoors to sleep? If so I think you're going to have to stand up to them and go against their advice. For your baby's safety and your peace of mind.
Trust yourself and listen to your mothers instinct.

No, I'm not leaving her outside below freezing. As I said, I was concerned it was too cold for her to sleep outside. It has been minus 2/minus 3 during the day for a week now. I have been bringing her in as soon as we get home.

I feel the cold and tend to wear a lot of layers. I need thermals even inside the house but I know I feel the cold way more than anyone else I know. My DH is quite happy in a t-shirt and gilet in this type of temperature. He is, however, from hardy farming stock - I'm a soft, city girl Smile

Everyone is telling me the baby should sleep outside. My maternal and paternal aunts say go out about 1pm, wrap her up and make sure the cat net is on. I tend to potter about the garden as she sleeps but there is less and less to do out there as winter bites. To hear my MIL, I think my DH and DSIL spent most of their day in the old pram at bottom of the garden - awake or asleep! It was the only reason she had a pram as it wouldn't go along the farm road.

So, no sleeping outside till the temperature improves. Is it still ok to go for walks? I had it in my head, don't know why, that it was ok till minus 10.

Yes its still ok for walks - I read that its ok to minus 10 too but in reality I wouldn't do it...or anywhere near it. Whilst walking you will be able to clearly see your baby - and therefore will be able to observe if she's ok, feel her face, body etc., look for red cheeks if she's hot etc. Thats a very different situation to leaving them outside on their own upon your return which is what you put in your original post. But DO wrap your baby up in layers, so that they are easy to add / remove if you think she is too hot or cold. Small babies struggle to regulate their own heat, so its vital you do this for her.

But I wouldn't go for a walk, and then leave your baby out - because your baby may well have been outside for many hours.

Again, I see no issue with her being next to you as you potter in the garden, again as long as she's not already been for a walk / outside for some time and is well wrapped up and checked on often IYKWIM.

Never mind what your MIL did 18-40 years ago - you DO NOT need to do what they did with your baby.....

Going back to your original question. If you want the Stokke Winter kit, I am sure your baby would appreciate it. They achieve good money on resale on Ebay.

stargirl1701 · 08/12/2012 13:02

Ok. Walk or garden, not both. I'd def pick a walk! I can see how my OP was worded poorly. I meant I left her in her pram not left her alone in her pram.
