HELP! Double Buggy Best for Stairs?

I could really do with some advice about double buggies. I have a newborn and a 17 month old and recently bought a Maclaren Twin buggy. HUGE MISTAKE! We have a flight of six fairly high steps leading from our front garden to the pavement and I simply cannot heave the Maclaren up them as the wheels are so small. Couple this with the fact that my toddler leans forward in the seat (the seat backs pull right forward) and it feels really unsafe to try to get down the steps as well. I have a sling and single buggy that works for little outings but i really do need a double buggy for trips to the park and longer excursions. I have thought about getting an Out n About double but don't want to buy another buggy that doesn't work for me. Any suggestions would be very very much appreciated. Thanks.

Big air tyres always worked well for me on steps.

Thanks Vajazzler. Was that a three wheeler?

I honestly can't think of anything I would want to heave up steps.....I would consider bumping certain pushchairs down. Could you consider getting a tandem, removing or folding up the rear seat, getting your eldest to walk to the pavement behind you and then put them in? A pushchair will only get heavier and harder. I have a Nipper but wouldn't want to pull it up anything....and that's about the lightest side by side there is.

I had a maclaren and found it a nightmare on steps, kerbs etc. I also had a three wheeler (think it was a mothercare one) and the big tyres were soooooo much easier to deal with, could push that thing one handed!
It was big though and wouldn't fit through our front door without a struggle, so just got into the habit of loading/unloading outside.
I do agree though, it was a lot easier, but still wouldn't want to pull it up/down six steps, esp as they both get bigger. Think maybe you need to 'train up' the toddler to walk up/down?
So, sorry not too much help, but if you still looking, think big wheels!!

Out and about 360. Air tyres and you can push it with one hand if needed.

Vajazzler · 06/09/2012 09:50

Yes it was, but there are 4 wheelers if you prefer.

The Air buggy Mimi might be worth a look if you want four wheels.

Is that 6 stairs or 6 flights of stairs?
We used to have about 10 and used Phil and teds fine but I wouldn't recommend as hated buggy

I would think the out and about would be fine, large tyres bounce down easily, doesn't matter if 3 or 4 wheeler as you only use back wheels on stairs anyway

Another Nipper Out and About recommendation. Was great on stairs, kerbs, getting on and off trains. I couldn't believe something so much bigger than the Maclaren single buggy I was used to could be so light and manoeuvrable. Took great lumps out every door lintel in our house though.

Tiggywunkle · 06/09/2012 22:12

There's a new narrow version now Thegirlonthelanding :)
It's only 72cms wide and sails through standard doorways :) Best improvement ever!

Thank you so much everyone. I really appreciate all the feedback and sorry I didn't reply sooner, I haven't had a chance to get online for a few days.

Well, from the sound of it if I have any chance of getting a buggy up the steps (there are six steps forevergreek, not six flights -thank god!) then it'll be with an Out n About so I think I might get one anyway.

I'm sure I'll be able to train my toddler in time but at the moment she wouldn't be safe so it may buy me some time. If not, I'll have to think of something else... Confused Brew
