Would you carry the Uppababy Vista seat by the bumper bar with baby in it?

First time parents here due in Dec, and yesterday we went for our first pram shopping trip. DH has heart set on Uppababy Vista following reviews on here and watching a video review on Youtube.

When we got back we were talking about the pro's and con's of the Vista, and DH mentioned he liked the fact you could detach the seat and carry it by the bumper bar. We have 5 wide but quite deep steps down to our front door, and he thinks he will carry baby in the seat down the steps and go back to get the chassis after. Now I'm not entirely comfortable with this - what if the bumper bar wasn't fixed in place properly? Is it even designed to bear that much weight? Surely it's better to take the baby out and get the whole buggy later? And given the size of the back wheels on the Vista, won't they be able to manage the steps?

Any advice welcomed, and if DH is being an idiot, how do I get him round to my way of thinking without actually saying "you're an idiot?" Happy to accept if the idiot is me!

Aren't all travel systems designed so you can carry the baby in the seat? If it isn't strong enough for carrying the baby, it'd be a pretty useless travel system :o

Being able to carry the baby in its seat is critical for going to restaurants and other people's houses as well as into your own home

Can u link to it? Isnit just a normal baby carseat?

SleeplessKnight · 02/09/2012 11:05

Sorry, not the car seat, he means the actual buggy seat. Will see if i can get a link going.

Do you mean the pushchair seat? If you do then yes he's being an idiot!

The bumper bar isn't designed to be a carry handleHmm

If you mean the car seat then that would be fine.

He means the black bar across the front of the pushchair seat

Noooooooo, that's not for carrying!

Passmethecrisps · 02/09/2012 11:12

We have gone for this for our first baby due in November. I am certain that once he sees and feels baby in the seat he will not be so keen on using the bar to carry the whole weight. It will tilt back I am sure which make make the whole thing feel insecure. I am not 100% sure but just going by the last time we felt it.

Do you need to beat this out of him or can you not just say 'why don't we wait and see'? Or is this part of te purchasing decision?

GoingforGoingforGOLD · 02/09/2012 11:15

Isn't the var attached to the frame rather than the seat?

GoingforGoingforGOLD · 02/09/2012 11:17

And if you could once you'd carried it inside you wouldn't ge able to put it down, it would just fall over backwards because it's nit got a flat base like a car seat surely?

Passmethecrisps · 02/09/2012 11:17

Don't think so going. When I have been in shops playing with the vista I use the bumper bar to steady the seat as I lift it out. This is why I am not sure about how it would feel with a baby in. Te bar is too low so the seat would fall back the way.

The easy answer is to contact uppababy and ask.

terrywoganstrousers · 02/09/2012 11:18

The bar is attached to the seat but it wouldn't hold the weight of a six month+ yr old I wouldn't think.

Passmethecrisps · 02/09/2012 11:19

2nd point is correct going.

Could you not pop into a shop which sells them and take a look with him? I agree that I wouldn't be comfortable with him lifting it like this but you have plenty of time to convince him of this.

terrywoganstrousers · 02/09/2012 11:19

The baby will be in the carry cot bit for the first 6 months anyway, so he'll soon change his mind by then!!!

SleeplessKnight · 02/09/2012 11:24

It's not a deal breaker by any means, i was just surprised by his way of thinking and when we talked about it, he saw no potential danger Hmm

Good point going, will try the falling over argument first, otherwise I'll have to do the wait and see tactic, and I'm sure once he feels the weight with the baby in it, he'll change his mind (fingers crossed)

Thanks everyone!

Oh I see - no that is definitely not for carrying!

Tiggywunkle · 02/09/2012 12:30

The only pushchair seats I would carry a baby in like that are the Bugaboo Cameleon and Donkey seats - both have legs inbuilt so that you can set the child down on the floor in the seat once you get home. I wouldn't like to lift a baby in one anyway - car seats are heavy and awkward enough by 6-12 months!! But you do need to think about where you put a crawling baby if you do it your way. TBH I would consider something more like the Baby Jogger Versa where you can scoop the baby out with one hand, sling the changing bag on your back, then fold the pushchair one handed and carry it along with everything else.

KatAndKit · 04/09/2012 11:05

Definitely not for carrying, especially not a heavy 6 month plus baby! It is meant to contain the child in the seat (although the harness does that) and to attach toys to it. The correct thing to do is to carry the child up the stairs in your arms and then go back to retrieve the buggy.

vallinnapod · 04/09/2012 20:05

No way! We have the Vista. The carrycot is fab to take on and off and carry along with the handle bit by the hood. The carry cot also fitted my tall (albeit skinny!) DS up to 6 months.

There is no way on earth I would carry him in the seat unit by the bumper bar, even at 6 months - however - 6-8 months I did switch the seat RF/FF with DS still in it, using the bumper (held very near the frame) for support - pretty sure this is not recommended though Grin

PS - great choice BTW. I love my Vista...DS just turned one and now moving into a Maclaren - but only when I don't fancy a chat with him/for nursery Grin TBH, the maclaren looks comfier for him to sleep in these days as the Vista's bucket seat just looks uncomfy.
