double for heavy big kids?? anything new coming out soon?

My 2 year old is 15kgs and my baby is 8kgs... my current double (mountain buggy duet) is getting rather heavy to push, especially with a bag or shopping...

I love the duet, but am wondering if anything else is better for all this weight to push? is there anything coming out soon for older bigger kids?

Their combined weight really isn't that much, you're nowhere near the weight limit on the Duet, is it definitely okay as in no issues with the frame or broken bits, tyre pressure okay etc.?

Mine are currently 7.5kg and 14kg and this is as easy as it gets I think... Until someone invents some sort of motorised thing we're stuck with actually pushing the weight ourselves! Someone might recommend a MB +one for bigger heavier kids but there are issues with how to manage a baby over 6months and toddler who still naps. Seemingly the set up works better for 2 older ones. I dunno, I pushed one in the shop unloaded and was surprised how light it felt.

Apart from a Baby Jogger City Mini Double a few years ago I have only had tandems, have a Peach 1 currently, which is okay, the best I've had for ease of push. Hauck Duett I found impossible to turn and put up curbs with toddler and newborn baby but I used it a bit for current and previous toddler (combined weight of oohhh way too much, 33kg ish?) and could push fairly easily up to about 7m pregnant. Had B Dual, I thought that pushed really nicely but didn't try it out with heavier combined weight. Currently trying out a Smyths Dimples Duo, which has great seating positions but doesn't seem sturdy enough really for two big kids, it's best for baby and toddler and perhaps not much beyond IMO.

Tiggy has two bigger kids and has tried almost everything going, I am sure she will have some good suggestions. Side by sides being probably a whole lot easier to push than tandems if you have the capacity in your day to day life to manage the width.

Hope that helps a bit. Reading back possibly not but I tried! Grin

I would check the tyres and blow them up a bit? This is always the problem when I feel the Duet has got a bit heavier/more difficult to push. A little more air and its back to being as easy as it can be to push 2 about! :)

I found the Duet problematic - I wouldn't say heavy to push but it pulled to the side my eldest was on (even when swapped round) but handle height for me makes a huge difference to pushing a double. If its not right for you then it makes a difference. The Duet handlebar even on the highest setting is relatively low which was a huge issue for me.

The lightest pushchairs I have tried are the side by sides - the Nipper and Airbuggy being the easiest to push with the TFK Twinner Twist Duo close after. For tandems it's the Mima Kobi, iCandy Peach Blossom and probably the Jane Twone but it's yet to be tried in real life. But these will all feel heavier I would think than the Duet.

Two children are heavy - wait until they are nearly 4 and 2 like my two!! believe me I push some weight but after today's awful first attempt at shopping with a single pushchair, I nearly bought a double half way round because DD was hard work! Always in the way!

ooh good thought about the tyres...I have just checked and they are a tiny bit softer.
maybe that will help. The buggy is holding the weight just fine...its me that is complaining.

maybe there is no easy way. Although I was thinking of switching to the mb plus one. it looks easy but I worry about my older one fitting and my younger one being uncomfortable...

with the +one... can the little one nap in that front seat? is there a height weight max on the back seat?

How old is your baby?
Does your eldest ever nap?

Yes, a little one can nap in the front seat, but you may wish to consider a head support - one MN has just got a fab liner with padded wings for her youngest to be comfy. There really is no height max on the rear seat. The hood can go really really high. I bet a secondary school child could easily get in the back. I love my +One - I find it much easier to handle, lift etc than the Duet. But you MUST MUST read carefully about it and check it will suit your children. We started using it when my youngest was around 15 months and my eldest was 3 and its been superb for us. Information and photos here under the green "reviews and information" button. If you have any questions then do come and ask because its important you understand the capabilities etc.

oldest is 2.5 and has only just stopped napping on some days. And no longer will nap in buggy.

younger one is 8 months and needs to sleep in buggy a lot

So to be honest, you are probably about right for a +One as long as you don't mind the baby not having a lie flat recline in tandem mode (there is one in single mode), invest in a good head support (not that you need it necessarily but if I were starting again I would look at a Snunkie padded liner, and you think the eldest won't mind her sibling being reclined towards them and the eldest won't annoy / pull the hair of the youngest?

If you didn't mind buying an older pushchair then an EasyLife Sport would be a very good long term investment. I have one from 2001/2 (age uncertain but at least 10 years) and whilst it needs a few things doing to it/replacing it is going strong.

It takes up to 45kg EACH side and has an enormous basket that will take masses of shopping. You can also unzip the bottom of the seats to make them bigger if you are still using it for off roading when they are older (DD2 sits on one side with it unzipped and she is 4y 7m and 111cm/18kg). I have found mine very useful Grin

It is a beast though and it looks massive but isn't as wide as some doubles are though is much wider of course than a duet!

cheapandchic · 11/07/2012 20:11

I can't do too wide. My front door is narrow and I occasionally get on a London bus.

Can the baby really sleep in the front of the plus one?

Easylife is out then!
