Pushchairs

I've bought the wrong pushchair. Now what?

Hi

So I thought I was being pragmatic by purchasing a maclaren xlr for my newborn. After a trip to my local high street, I think she is too small and it's too flimsy. I will keep it for when she is bigger though.

I'm now considering an ICandy Cherry or Babystyle Oyster. My requirements are:

High handle bars -as I am quite tall
Lightweight - I live on the first floor flat
Rear facing- I'm a paranoid first time mum
Sturdy carry cot- DD is 2 weeks old

I'm sure this has been done to death, but there might be new advice around.

Thanks

I would keep it and use a sling for a bit, before you know it she will be fine in the xlr and you won't have wasted money.

Disclaimer: both of mine in an xt from birth.

Either of those would be a good choice. The Cherry is a two piece fold though and the handlebar isn't adjustable. It may not actually be tall enough for you. Are you going to be carrying the pushchair upstairs or just taking the carrycot and leaving the chassis downstairs?

Are you using it with a carry cot or just the 5 point harness? The carry cot should keep her cosy.

A sling at this age would be great. Something soft and streachy like a kari me/moby/Hana Baby wrap(with Bamboo)

I would suggest buying what ever you get second hand. I've just brought my third pram and DS is only 14 months old. Oh and I have 5 slings too!

Maclaren buggied are bloody brilliant. She'll be in it comfortably in no time and it will take her up to toddlerhood. If you are going to buy another buggy, at least buy it secondhand.

I've got a Calin Bleu wrap! Is that the same as a moby wrap? It has been really hot lately and don't want her to overheat or be irritable. I'm not sure if I'm using the appropriate wrap style. I tried the hammock, but it was awkward and DD seemed uncomfortable.

I'll muddle through with the xlr. She just seems so far away and not well protected in it. I will try the carrycot. Also, it fell back on the bus. I did manage to catch in time though Sad. It also fell back when I took DD out of it. Maybe it's me rather than the xlr.

you've got the best buggy there is, I think - but I agree, not ideal for tinies.
Calin Bleu wrap should be fine now, and don't worry about the heat too much, you'll know if she's too hot (she'll be against you so you can tell). Is it a gauze wrap? We have one, and I think it's great (though actually haven't got it out again yet - dc3 (11 days) is still in a kari-me, which is MUCH hotter (stretchy jersey) but really comfortable for little ones.
Maclarens do fall over, but you get used to that: you can't hang anything/much off the handlebars when baby is so small. All the pluses of the buggy being light/foldable etc. SO outweigh the downsides.

The Cherry next to the Oyster for comparison.
I like both the Cherry and Oyster (and I have to say I join you re the Maclaren). I like a good sturdy cosy pushchair. The Oyster has the higher handlebar and to be honest has more features, but I wouldn't like to carry the Oyster up the stairs in one chunk - I would be folding it in two pieces and if you do that then the Cherry is easier to carry. The Cherry chassis can be pulled along on its wheels so I am sure could be pulled up the stairs behind you, but if not both the seat and chassis are pretty light.
Maybe those photos will help you though.

I would never leave a buggy to be honest without me holding it on the bus anyway - they can go anywhere. If you put all your stuff underneath then it wont tip - you shouldnt hang anything off the handles.

I thought the xlr was less prone to tipping though because you had the car seat in it?

It really shouldnt though unless you have weighed it down on the handles - it shouldnt tip for example on a level surface with nothing on the back when you take dc out of it. Thats a bit odd.

My XT tips over if I leave a bag on the handle. It's a pain. I normally forget I've tins of beans on the handle as DS is crying and wants to get out.

In terms of wrapping I'd try the Front Wrap Cross Carry if your Calin Bleu is cotton and not jersey.
Also here is a good link for wrapping in hot weather
Wrapping even in the heat is lovely way to get to know you baby. Just wear a little less clothing and don't dress baby to hot.
