Pushchair has a brake problem, mothercare can't find a fault...what can i do

I have terrible luck with pushchairs but thought we'd finally got the right one in the Jane Rider, but for the past two months every now and then when I turn the brake off it sticks and I can't do anything to get it going then after between 30 seconds and 5 minutes it will suddenly just be off and work fine again.

This happened the other day, it started to chuck it down so i applied the brake to put the raincover on, turned the brake of nothing happened so for 5 minutes i was stood in the peeing down rain getting soaked while the baby (dry under her rain cover) laughed hysterically at my plight, then all of a sudden the brake realise it was off and away we went.

It doesn't happen everytime so when I tried to show Mothercare it wouldn't happen but they sent it off anyway (2 year guarantee and pushchair is 9 months old). But, they rang today to say the pushchair is back and they didn't find a fault.

I don't know what to do. It's a right pain in the bum when it happens but I can't prove it's happen.

Does anyone know where I stand?

Does anyone know if this is a common fault?

I would spray brake with lubricant (silicone spray) as this is the most common cause of brake issues. Sorry I'm not familiar with that buggy is it a flip up and down one or click on click off? If its the click on/off one with wires inside the frame they may need adjusting?

It's a click on click off brake which is on the handlebar, it's connected by a wire to the base unit. I though there might have been a problem with the wire but i've been told no :-(

Thanks for your advice

when you release the brake try rocking the buggy back slightly.

Most of the time that does work, sometimes thogh it just doesn't. I guess it's something i'll just have to live with, just seems such a shame to have a niggle when it cost so much money!

I spoke to one of the girls in mothercare today and she said i should bring it back if it persists, she also said that she felt they should have just replaced the part and my say so should be enough because not all faults show all the time and this sort of thing happens on a range of pushchairs particularly ones where the brake is linked by wires.

I'll see what happens

Thanks

First off they may have fixed it - they will almost certainly have sprayed it with lubricant as a default.

Also I think you do have a right to reject it, officially, as it's not fit for purpose and hasn't worked for a reasonable period of time for this product.

Not sure exactly where you stand but consumer direct are pretty good so give them a call on Monday.

It sounds as though it is probably just sticking, maybe there was debris in the cable, something like that. It might be working ok when you get it back.

If it's not keep on at them. I had a major issue with a Mountain buggy brake a few years ago - the brake would apply itself at random, and would not release - and after a lot of toing and froing, where they insisted it was Ok, eventually the chassis was replaced. I never had a problem again.

I hadn't thought of consumer direct but might try that. In fairness the girl i spoke to today was far more helpful than the one i spoke to on the phone. I'll give it a go and see how it is x
