To double buggy or not

I have a 13 mo and am expecting no 2 later in the year (dont know when yet)
my DD1 will be be between 18 and 20mo.
I'm wondering whether I should get a double buggy (not a fan of tandem) if so what one.
Or shall i put new one in a sling and use the stroller when alone and use the pram and stroller i already have when with hubby.
I do get out and about alot and only occasionally have us or a car DD1 is showing no signs of walking yet so a buggy board is a no no for sure.

When DC2 is due, my DS will be 18months.

I am getting a double pram as:

  1. DS is showing no signs of walking and I doubt he'll want to walk for long distances even when he does start walking (my son is rather lazy).
  2. DS still takes day naps, and when out and about I'd want him to be able to nap comfortably (seat recline etc).
  3. I don't have a car, so walking and buses are my main mode of transport.
  4. The sling is not an option for me. Although with DS I used a sling at home, I couldn't imagine using one outdoors as I'd be terrified I'd trip and flatten my baby :(

When I had ds, dd was 19 months old. I never thought of getting a double buggy - but six weeks and a knee injury later (marching around the neighbourhood with ds in a sling and dd in the pram - not a good idea apparently according to the physio) - I relented. We got a Mountain Buggy Duo. Best decision I ever made. Both mine were very early risers (4.30am/5am), so I would feed ds, throw them both in the buggy and then walk the streets until 6.30am or so when I would grab a coffee and head home for the 7am feed.

Other reasons why it's probably for the best:

  1. IME 18mo kids are not excellent at walking all the time. My dd is the most on the go child I know, and she still won't walk everywhere.
  2. Have you every tried shopping for clothes with a toddler on the loose? Sometimes you just need everybody confined.
  3. Agree with milk - I am shocking for tripping over my own feet, and I have always been worried about falling flat on my face whilst carrying a baby.

Honestly? It just makes life easier sometimes. And with 18 months between kids, that's not the worst thing in the world.

oh and we got the buggy board - unless you are some kind of walking ninja, I found it to be really strange as I had to walk to one side of the buggy or my feet kept hitting it. Which REALLY irritated me. That and dd would constantly attempt to jump off it whilst crossing roads etc. Safety plus!

Absolutely get a double with that age gap. You will never regret it! Children at 18 months are far easier to walk, control, influence etc than a 2 and a bit year old who knows what they would prefer! Believe me you can't browse for anything whilst trying to control a toddler and push a pushchair. Trying to shop with a basket requires some kind of kind of octopus technique involving pushing a pushchair, hanging onto reins whilst your toddler chooses to go in the opposite direction whilst you hold the basket with your teeth whilst kicking what you want up from the shelf and it landing neatly into your basket.
Trying to sling a baby can be just as hard as I ended up trying to support a 6 week old whilst having to lean over and push a pushchair - and I reasoned that if I was having to push a pushchair, it may as well be a double one anyway. Your DC is likely to want a pushchair for another year on and off (mainly on), so its worth getting.
If your DC was over 2 and a half, you may get a different answer, but definitely definitely a double is the way to go!

Firstly what is your budget? Secondly, so you might if it is first hand or second hand?

Any other requirements?

Rachelbow · 02/05/2012 14:05

Budget is questionable pref £500 or less but if i love it I'll pay for it (if that makes sense) tho I am happy to have second hand. I want both babies to be able to face me and want side by side over a tandem and to it in the boot of a saloon (skoda superb) I'm impressed the bugaboo Donkey but it is pricey (and i think your only paying for the name) and want to look at alternatives

I would get a Stroll-Air My Duo if you're adament about side by side and reversible seats. They need to be imported at the moment but are supposed to be released in the UK this year. I have no idea how likely that is.
You can buy from Balkowitsch via Amazon.com for £568 exluding customs. I think it would be worth every penny though.
