Best double for 2-y-o and newborn?

Bearcrumble · 14/04/2012 16:51

I thought I wanted a P+T explorer but was shocked at how heavy it was when I tried it in the shop.

I walk a lot locally in a very hilly area of London and get buses and trains regularly so one that is light and will fit on public transport is what I need.

Any suggestions?

Also I am probably going to sell my old Xplory - it's the 2009 version so not the current updated one that's been on sale for the past couple of years - do you think I'll get much for it to put towards my double? I've got the chassis, carrycot, normal seat, change bag, cosytoes and cupholder.

Check out Ebay for what Xplories are going for - that'll give you a good idea.

I'm wondering the same thing. I think most doubles are going to be pretty heavy, unfortunately, but I'm looking at the Mountain Buggy Duet (as narrow as a single) and the Baby Jogger City Mini double. Still looking though - with the same age-gap! Will watch thread with interest.

I'll have a 2.2yo and newborn and have been thinking about what to get. I've looked at the Oyster Max, Jane Twone and icandy Peach Blossom 2 (all on paper and in photos as the first two aren't out for a while and the PB2 is only just starting to arrive in the UK).

I already have a Britax B Dual which is nice to push but heavy to lift and quite wide (67cm without mud guards). I would have been happy to stick with it but I can't help but buy new pushchairs regularly and what better excuse than a new baby! Wink

I'm still not completely decided but I think I might have to bite the bullet, sell everything and get the Peach. All three would probably suit your needs but the Jane Twone looks incredibly light for a double and seems to work well, it's similar to a B Dual in many ways.

When is your baby due?

ItsMyLastOne · 14/04/2012 17:53

Oh I forgot to say, I think that if you're going on public transport a lot then a tandem is best rather than a side by side. Although the duet does have it"/ plus points, especially being only 63cm wide!

I have just under a 2 year gap between my too and I have the P+T sport. It is two years old and still in great condition. Easy to clean and although it is heavy to lift it is so easy to push. I did buggy fit and found it easier to push my two kids in this push chair then my single child in my old chicco pushchair. I haven't tried it on the bus but have had no problems on trains.

Used, and loved P&T sport for 1 and 2 and 2 and 3. Worth every penny Smile

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 14/04/2012 18:54

P&T's aren't heavy. I do like the baby jogger double but personally I would get a gently used P&T.

DameFlatYouLent · 14/04/2012 20:02

Sorry to hijack, but doesn't the child on the bottom of the P&T get bored? And what about not being able to recline for naps? And not being able to access the shopping basket or hang things from the handle?

Again - sorry for hijack! Just trying to get my head around this whole double thang...

musttidyupmusttidyup · 14/04/2012 20:50

Bordem not an issue as can look out the side. Although neither of mine waited until 6 months to use second seat rather than lie flat. The sport does recline a bit for naps so OK if they small but an older child might find the metal bar uncomfortable.
The shopping basket thing is a PITA but i used tio unclip the side of the basket and shove stuff in. The one on the bottom usually has their feet on something. Not being able to hang thingsd from the handle is also a PITA but you manage.
If you need to carry lots of stuff maybe its not the one for you, b ut despite all these things I LOVED this pushchair and would wholly recommend. Was sorry to see mine go Smile

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 14/04/2012 20:55

Pretty much what she said^.

I had a pouch bag that hung on to the handlebar from bagabottle

BreeVanDerTramp · 14/04/2012 21:06

Looking for a double for my baby due in June and 20 month old do like mountain buggy duet.

Looked at P&T in Mothercare and luckily the very helpful shop assistant pointed out a massive flaw to me - as toddler if tall for his age when we tried him in the top seat his head was over the top of it and couldn't get hood up! I was shocked and grateful she saved me £600 as not something I would have thought of Blush

messagetoyourudy · 14/04/2012 21:23

I had 23 months between my 2 and I had a Mclaren twin techno - it was very light, manouvered well and folded up fairly small. I live in a city and I found it fine for getting on and off buses or walking any good distance.

Although for the first few months I did use a sling & single buggy combo and by the time my eldest was nearly 3 I used a single buggy & buggy board combo.

So the amount of time you actually use the double buggy is only for about 6/8 months I found.

I think there are far far better options than a P&Ts unless you want to go off road, or you simply walk. P&Ts do have a lack of storage, the seats are fairly close together, leg room on some models can be restricted, head room for the child on top in newborn mode ie when the doubles kit is on the front rather than the back, and raincover space for that child are issues on some models. I personally dont like the newborn mode - by 4-6 months a baby wants to see more than a patch of sky and the rear of a seat. At least in a parent facing carrycot, they can see you, and maybe their sibling and may have other views with certain carrycots.

A tandem will get more use long term IYKWIM. For example we dont need a double ie side by side now, but with a tandem its easy to simply attach the second seat just in case, or put it in the basket, or fold it up behind the upper seat (again depending on what you get) and then if you do need it in a toddler tantrum emergency situation, you are ready to go in seconds. The exception to this is of course the Bugaboo Donkey, where you could use it in a similar way to a tandem.

The other thing to bear in mind is that not all tandems are the same. Some are lighter than others, and others aren't laid out well, others have identity crisis'. Go and have a wander around here because the main focus are double pushchairs especially tandems.

I agree with itsmylastone though and I would send you off to look at the Britax B-Dual - like a P&T's but with much better spacing, leg room, basket space, reclining to flat on both seats, folds with both seats on etc. or the new Jane Twone which I dont know much about but first impressions seem excellent, or the new Babystyle Oyster Max, or the iCandy Peach Blossom - either the current one given your age gap, or the new version if you can wait. The new version is far superior but you could well get by with the current version.

Bearcrumble · 15/04/2012 14:00

Thank you all for the advice. I think the new iCandy Peach Blossom is gorgeous and perfect but I don't think I can convice DH to shell out a grand for a pushchair. Britax B-Dual sounds good. I will need to go to a shop and see it and try it out before I decide.
