Double buggy advice

Firsttimer1007 · 12/03/2012 22:13

Hi there
I have an 8 mth old and expecting DC2 in November, and my head is spinning with double buggys!

Just wondering if you all found either the side by side wider buggies better than the one up one down normal width ones?
I would like to have both of them facing me, with the option of pushchair-carseat and pushchair-carrycot
Are the wider side by side buggies easy enough to manoever?

Also, what is the general consensus on here on the best double buggy?
Any advice appreciated!

Well yes, I assume you must work for a buggy company the amount you know.

Tiggywunkle · 18/03/2012 20:27

No, I just like pushchairs and have owned a lot.

SilverSky · 18/03/2012 21:12

Thanks Tiggy!

misdee · 18/03/2012 22:43

not a fan of the bjcm double personally, but have heard a bit about the gt which sounds good on paper. cant wait to see reviews of it.

jezebelle · 18/03/2012 22:52

I've just brought a city select, ds2 is 9 months and ds3 due in 8 weeks !! personally having played with the peach blossom i thought it was rubbish, it was really heavy compared to city select and had such small seats, ds2 is 28lb and looked so squashed in the seat, plus on the city select you can move carrycot and seat around where as on peach you had to either buy a top carrycot or bottom, not interchangeable

Tiggywunkle · 19/03/2012 00:01

Believe me, I thought just the same as you jezebelle - I even wrote a whole website about how the City Select was better, lighter etc. But I was left eating my words a year later when I could no longer push the BJCS for pains up both arms. I was the biggest fan ever. But my Peach Blossom 10 months after the BJCS failed me, is still going strong and is still a one handed push. My 3.5 year old still fits great in the main seat. The seat liner removes and the hood slides up the chassis and then unzips off the rear. The new Peach Blossom will have one carrycot for both upper and lower positions. In theory this also fits the single position, but iCandy say that the Blossom carrycot is not safety tested for the single position.

Sadly i cannot shrink ds2 though to get him in the peach seats !! :) and i love that the baby jogger ones aren't over each other where as the peach ones are.

Tiggywunkle · 19/03/2012 13:28

I preferred that too until I couldn't push the BJCS any more and DD kicked DS in the head when facing each other, which caused me issues when DS needed to nap (as the seats only recline in certain positions). I am not a fan of the current Peach Blossom but the new version is much improved and works brilliantly.

Beadley · 19/03/2012 15:10

Thanks Tiggywunkle - that new peach blossom looks fab for twins or a closer age gap that I'll have - tried ds (age 2.4) in a donkey today and didn't have much room. I reckon it's down to an explorer or promenade for me. Anyone know where I can get the seat measurements of those two to compare?

jezebelle · 19/03/2012 15:14

Oh dear at the kicking !! I love the thought of them facing each other though, if they're being nice :)

My tall 3.5 year old looks more comfortable in the seat than in most other pushchairs. Did you move the hood up to the highest setting? She had loads of room and there's a good leg length on the seat too. I have 22 months between my two.
I can't wait to see the new Peach colours too :)))) I would love to do something funky with a Black Magic seat and one of the other liners inside.

SilverSky · 20/03/2012 06:02

Any idea about the RRP of the Peach?

jezebelle · 20/03/2012 08:48

Yes, it was er width wise we had issue with, he is a large baby :) even the woman in John Lewis said it was no good for him, he could go in now just but if he stays a tall solid child he would soon outgrow it.

CruCru · 20/03/2012 09:12

Hi Firsttimer, have you thought about the Uppababy Vista with the toddler rumbleseat? I think both seats are forward facing. These people sell them:

House of Baby

I have the Vista and love it so I have ordered the rumbleseat. I also have friends with older children who still use it and are happy with it.

Tiggywunkle · 20/03/2012 09:43

Tall, heavy 3.5 year old in the Peach seat. The Vista with rumble seat is excellent too as long as the eldest child doesn't nap and you don't have a newborn.

Tiggywunkle · 20/03/2012 09:44

(Unless you don't mind using a car seat for 3 months)

SilverSky · 02/04/2012 13:38

Just had a look at Mountain Buggy Duet. It fits in the car, breaks down easy, can take a car seat and is newborn friendly. I like the steering, air tyres, individual hoods and height of handlebar.

Only query I have is that DS fits fine now and should be able to use it til he is around 5 - he's 17mo currently and he's average size. Wondering realistically how long it will last? Worried he might fill out and not fit!

Can you adjust the hoods?

Any other thoughts on the MB Duet?

I'm almost sold on it!

We also saw the BJ and P&T and Nipper.

BJ has hard wheels, P&T was heavy and £, the Nipper was an ass to break down and didn't fold as well as the MB.

Tiggywunkle · 03/04/2012 00:18

It should take an average 4 year old I would think. The issue I had was feet because the seats are close together, my eldest kept kicking the baby. Also leaning over him and poking him away. Grr! I got fed up of removing shoes. My Duet also pulled to the side my eldest was on fairly badly. I think its better suited to twins TBH. Have you looked at the Baby Jogger City Mini GT? That has 'forever air' tyres and has the easy fold etc. But it wont take a car seat.

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/04/2012 08:15

Just been reading some of the peach comments. Iirc the max weight of child you can put in the peach is 15 kg, which meant that my boys had to be out of it by age 2!

Tiggywunkle · 03/04/2012 12:22

All UK pushchairs have to be tested to 15kgs to be allowed to be sold in the UK. It is possible for companies to pay for further testing for bigger weights but it costs more, which is why few companies do so. I know from speaking to iCandy that the Peach will hold quite a lot more weight and what I tend to do, not just with iCandy, is search the US and Australian sites to see what their upper limits are because fundamentally some of the UK pushchairs are the same - I am not saying all though - and use this cautiously. The Peach weight limit in Australia for example is very large, even larger than what I was told. The Baby Joggers are not really different (except fabrics and minor things) from the US versions and they have huge weight limits in the US.

SilverSky · 03/04/2012 20:50

Thanks Tigs I will look into the GT. Wish there was some kind of buggy loan library. Its a minefield and not exactly a cheap mistake to make either.

cheapandchic · 04/04/2012 08:36

Just to jump in and say I have the mountain buggy duet....and I love it!
Its absolutely great. fits everywhere, so easy to push and my two (19 month gap) just love it. Yes they are close together but thats why my toddler loves it, she is always telling everyone about the baby and gently touches her...they love sitting side by side and because its narrow I can go around town with no problems.
The only negative is that it takes up the whole boot, its not very small when folded, but I only put it in the car once a week so its suits me just fine. Other than that I think its perfect...and I debated a long time!

SilverSky · 04/04/2012 20:48

Thank you cheap! Would you say your eldest is of average size?

The MB duet has lots of features that are drawing me in!!!
