Too big for car seat, too small to face forwards?

DD is only 5.5 months but suddenly seems very constrained (particularly around the shoulders) in her Recaro Young Profi Plus car seat, which clicks onto the Maclaren Techno XLR. She was out of the carry cot by about 2 months so I guess I should have seen this coming! We can get a new car seat (though I'm gutted to be doing it so early in terms of the money spent!) but I don't know what to do about the buggy. She feels too little to face forwards :( Am I being PFB? Does anyone know if there are any other (bigger) car seats that will click on to the buggy and so keep her facing me for a bit longer? Google won't tell me.

Also, the bloody car seat is supposedly good until babies are 13kg or approx 15months old. Well she's nowhere near either! She's just over 7kg for God's sake, and she's fairly long but not freakishly so. She's in 3-6mo clothes. Am I missing something obvious?! I took out the newborn insert at about 3 months and I can't see anything else to take out to make it bigger!

What ever you do don't put her in a forward facing seat yet. I'm sure she just looks snug and is fine but I'm sure someone will be along with some better advice soon Smile

I don't know the particular model but isn't there adjustable levels for the shoulder straps. My maxi cosi has two. It also has a bit underneath to adjust the strap which pulls these straps tighter.

Spotty is there a specific guideline about when to put them front facing? (In the pram I mean - I know about the car.) I've read the research about anxiety etc and although I know it has its flaws it does make me not want to do it - plus I think I'd miss her!! (Selfish...!?)

Ulysses I'm going to go and play with it again and see if I can find anything. Her shoulders and head just look so...hemmed in!

Errrrm read the manual? My baby car seat had different level of holes to thread the belts through but they weren't apparent until you took the cover off. Your DD really would have to be abnormal to outgrow a baby seat before 6 months.

I think it can just be surprising to see your baby filling the infant car seat when they looked so tiny to start with. As long as her head doesn't go I've the top edge it is still the right size I think but do check you instructions manual.

In terms of the MacLaren, could you try one of those full body baby snuggle things that have a head hugger cushion and side cushions too. We used one in our Mutsy when ds2 outgrew the carrycot at about 5 months but seemed to small to be in just a seat. It was great. I will try and find a link...

Dilys, thanks, have done.

tiredteddy thanks - the head support thingy I think would make it worse as she's already filling the seat sideways, it's more that she needs more space! She doesn't fill it lengthways though - her head is nowhere near the top. Maybe she's just really broad?!

I meant the support for your buggy forward facing if you felt that she was small and that is why you are putting her in the car seat clipped on which she is big for! Did I get it wrong?

SpottyTeacakes · 07/03/2012 19:05

Oh you meant forward facing in the pushchair?! Blush sorry I thought you meant in the car! She would be fine in the pushchair facing forward, would probably live a nose around!

tiredteddy no-you make perfect sense, I misunderstood! Really good idea actually, thanks. Though I'll still be sad not being able to chat to her Sad
