Double I can put a car seat on

EMS23 · 29/02/2012 11:59

I'm pregnant with DC2, Dd will be 22months when this one arrives.
I want a double that I can put the carseat on and have DD in a toddler seat.

Bugaboo Donkey looks perfect to me but I'm not sure if there is anything else out there which fits the bill.

Can anyone recommend a double which takes one newborn carseat?

phil and teds do, don't they? also the briax b-dual.

How about the Icandy peach blossom? This you can use as a toddler pushchair with a car seat on (I know maxi cosi works, not sure on others) or as a toddler seat with carrycot (but it's very small and not really worth it imo) or with 2 pushchair seats as the baby grows. It is very flexible and you can also use it as a single pushchair or even as a single with car seat.

I loved mine!

ds will be 19 months when next one arrives so I had same issue. I was deciding between Baby Jogger City Select (BJCS) - which I fell in love with at first sight, and Phil & Teds explorer

  • which I was adamant I hated!!
Both can have car seats attached (beware some retailers will insist/swear blind that the P&T's can not when in double mode, and send you round in circles but they can!!) In the end we went for P&T's, and my love/hate flipped!! It's waaaay lighter than BJCS, stays as one unit even in double mode so no faffing taking off chairs seperately then buggy chassis etc for loading/unloading into car. A lot cheaper too as so many great/nearly new ones out there to be snapped up, and on a practical side can replace every single element, should something go wrong. We bought ours earlier so I/toddler could get used to it together before new baby arrives which has really helped. Also got a buggy board thrown in with the 2nd hand one we got, which while he needs help on at the mo he already loves! Happy hunting!

Most doubles can have carseats fitted so I wouldn't worry about that as the main problem. What do you want out of the pushchair? What will it need to do and how much can you afford? Also, when are you due to give birth?

EMS23 · 29/02/2012 13:30

Hypatia - baby is due in Sept.
I've had a Maclaren XT with my first and that has been great. Used the carrycot a bit but found the biggest advantage was attaching the carseat as I drive a lot and the baby would fall asleep and stay asleep if left in car seat, whereas would wake up if I transferred to carrycot/ pramseat. So I really want to be able do do the same with new baby.
DD is quite small so I am sure she'll still need to be in buggy. She will be 22months.
I use buggy mostly in town/ around shops but I live in the sticks. I have an Audi A6 so big boot.
I think I'd prefer side by side but only because it looks like the bottom child on a stacked pushchair looks squished to me. This might not be the case at all!
Budget is pretty flexible but the Donkey feels like lot of money at £1200 for the basics, not even costed add ons yet. And I guess I'll need a new car seat either way as DD's old Recaro carseat will only go on the Maclaren I think.

Although it can look as though the child on the bottom of a P&T is a bit squashed our two used to fight over who got that seat, they loved it so much.

Tiggywunkle · 29/02/2012 16:25

It's not usually the case that in a andem a lower child is squished and as the PP says, my eldest fights for the lower seat. The Britax B-Dual has tons of space between the seats and on the City Select you have a lot of choice where the child it's. On something like the Bebecar One&Two or Kolcraft Contours, the children have plenty of space too. But side by sides which take a car seat: look at the Easywalker Duo, TFK Twinner Twist Duo, Mountain Buggy Duo, and Duet (only up to 9kgs in a car seat), Air Buggy Mimi, or importing a Stroll-Air My Duo.

HypatiaTheProcrastinator · 29/02/2012 16:27

You can get Recaro adapters for the Baby Jogger City Select, iCandy Peach and iCandy Apple (so possibly the Pear, but I'm not certain).

Tandems are easier for taking carseats as they don't add to the width of the pushchair. That can mean the difference between fitting through a doorway and not.

My suggestions would be Britax B-Dual, iCandy Peach Blossom 2 and Oyster Max for tandems. The last two should be out before the baby is born. The Donkey would be great, but if the price is putting you off, then have a look at the Stroll-Air MyDuo to get lots of benefits of a Donkey, but it's much lighter, more compact folded and has bigger hoods. It would have to be imported, costing about £600 altogether. I can't remember which carseats it can take, but it may only take American ones.

EMS23- I'm in a similar position myself, I'm due baby number 2 in June and I will have a solid 22month old by then. I couldnt have survived the early months without being able to click the car sear onto the pushchair so i know this is definately something i want for a double pushchair. I currently have a city mini and I was hoping to get the city mini double ( or the new gt double). I assumed you could fit a car seat onto these, does anyone know if you can/can't? Thanks in advance!

HypatiaTheProcrastinator · 01/03/2012 09:55

You can put a carseat on a double BJCM, but it hangs over the other child's seat. I think they can only be fitted to 2011 and 2012 models though.

Sgj14 · 01/03/2012 12:27

Thanks very much. I will try and get to a dept store and try one out. As long as the overhang isn't too bad I will prob try and go for this one, as I love my current one. Thanks for the info.

Tiggywunkle · 01/03/2012 14:16

No you can't fit a car seat to a BJCMD. I believe use of a car seat is only US approved, not UK approved. As Hypatia says they apparently impinge onto the other child's seat, stick out a long way in front and generally dont work that well.

We had an icandy pear with a maxi cosi cabrio, was fantastic as a double buggy, and putting a carseat on was invaluable --as dd screamed non stop in anything else, waste of money buying the carrycot-- and I'd get it again in a heartbeat but my dcs are rapidly approaching 4 and 5 so ours has gone to another home.
