Britax B-dual / B-Smart - anyone used the soft carry cot for occasional overnight sleeping?

Hi all.

I've got another thread going at the mo about possibly taking a moses basket abroad on holiday and I agree with the general concensus that it's not practical!
I've got a Britax Vigour, and a new B Dual. The hard carry cot I;ve got for the Vigour isn;t suitable for overnight sleeping as it's not ventilated. I need to buy a soft carrycot anyway for the Dual.
I worry that DS2 won't sleep in the cot there as I'm struggling to get him to sleep in the moses basket regularly though it's getting better. I think he likes cosiness and security (co-sleeping for the whole week is not good for me as I struggle to sleep myself like this)

So, the upshot is, could I have him in the soft carry in the cot if necessary? I called Britax and was told it wasn't suitable as it's more of a big sleeping bag so probably won;t be comfy, but if it;s resting on a cot mattress I can't see this being a problem really.

Thanks!

I dont know if this would work but could you put the mattress inside it, is there enough space ? Just a question but why cant the baby sleep in the carrycot if it has a proper ventilated mattress ?

I would be concerned at the ventilation or rather lack of it, and at the possibility of the baby overheating in what is essentially a sleeping bag. All the carrycots I know that are suitable for overnight sleeping have hard wooden bases with visible ventilation either in the bases and / or the mattress. I think I would be trying your baby in a cot before you go to get him used to it and if it doesn't work then explore other options like swaddling, grobags etc

I can change the mattress but it's the make up of the carry cot that's the issue. He's already swaddled, and I'm ging to try gro bags this week, but I can't try him in a cot till we get there as I don't have a spare one at home. I think I need to get the carry cot and see how snugly ie possibly overheating it really is.

Clearly I am about to out myself as a bad mother...

DS slept in this carrycot, in a cot, most nights for the first few weeks of his life. He liked it.

I never really thought about the suitability, I just thought carryCOT = can be slept in.

I'm not really sure how ventilation is an issue - it is shallow and we didn't have the cover or hood on. Or am I missing something here?

Some carrycots are safety certified for overnight sleeping eg Bugaboo, some iCandy, Uppababy etc. Some like Baby Jogger aren't, and some offer safe mattresses as an option. But as I understand it carrycots are deemed safe for day time naps on the basis that you should really (!) be awake and with your baby ie watching them. At night time you arent (!).

It sounds as though the type you're talking about Coco is a proper carrycot. That's different to a soft carrycot. A normal hard carrycot usually has ventilation, although you do need to check. But a soft carrycot doesn't. It's essentially a small, more structured, well padded foot muff.

In this kind of situation, I would normally ask myself, if anything happened and I caused harm to my child by doing this, could I live with myself?

I just looked at your thread and saw you're going to lanzarote. Another thing that would put me off doing this is the fact it could be quite a bit warmer than it will be here, and your ds could overheat more easily.

feelingratheroverwhelmed · 08/01/2012 13:18

Its likely to be cooler at night as the room won't be heated like our bedroom is here. I'm going to email friends to see if anyone has a pram with carrycot that's designed for overnight sleeping. I know one person with an iCandy, wonder if they'll let me borrow it...

Just check the iCandy is still suitable for overnight sleeping - not all are. A fold flat carrycot like the Uppababy Vista one would be ideal. I assume you ave looked into things like the Phil&Teds Nest and other similar pop up baby beds / travel cots?

feelingratheroverwhelmed · 08/01/2012 14:46

Thing is it needs to be something small so it mimics how he feels in a basket, but we don't want to spend money on something he'll grow out of really soon. We do need to get another travel cot, but I want one that will last us a good while. Plus, they are very stingy with the baggage allowance!

How old is your DS? Would somthing like this work? Its only £20 and is similar size to a moses basket. We have 2 for our twins who are happy to sleep in them. They are 6mths now and small for their size, they would still fit in them but are too wiggly now.

CocoPopsAddict · 09/01/2012 14:20

Saoirse - yes, you're quite right. Ignore me OP - I was using the Britax actual carrycot, I now see there is a different 'soft carrycot'.
