Mutsy 4 Rider vs. ICandy Apple?

Hi,
I'm due in February and need to buy a pushchair. Should be very exciting, except I just can't decide! I've narrowed it down to Mutsy Rider (or 4 Rider Light) and ICandy Apple.
Today I have looked at the Apple in John Lewis and did not get on very well with the folding mechanism. I'm more inclined to go for the Mutsy but I can't find a nearby stockist so would have to buy it off the Internet without having a chance to look at it. I know I could send it back if I don't like it (thanks to the Distance Selling Regulations) but I'm trying to avoid the hassle!
Basically can someone share their experience of either or?
Many many thanks in advance

I'm interested in the 4Rider/Light too. Have you worked out the difference between the two that makes the weoght difference? It seems to me that the 4Rider has air tyres at the back, but the Light's are hard foam. I really like the fact you can get the super huge basket for it.

I have the I-Candy Apple and it is fab. DS is nearly 2 and it has been well used with no problems whatsoever and is still in pretty good nick. Great on the beach and muddy dog walks, which were pretty big criteria for us! The folding mechanism is a bit of a knack - you need to be a bit forceful with it - but its very easy when you get the hang of it. Once you have done it a few times it becomes second nature - so I would go back and try it a few more times in-store. The only down-side for me - it is a big pram and takes up most of the boot of my focus and can sometimes be tricky in little shops!.

I've just looked up the weights and folded dimensions. They're both fairly big folded, but the Apple is much heavier at 15kg compared with 10.5kg for the 4Rider and 8.6kg for the Light.

I love my iCandy apple and agree it is easy to fold once you get the knack (which you will after a couple of tries) but also that it is heavy - a problem for us as we live in a flat, but we just leave the pram in the car so not too much of a problem. Seems really comfy for DD and very easy to manoeuvre etc.

I've got a 4rider light and I love it! It goes over different terrains easily and is very sturdy. The wheels on the back are quite wide so manoeuvring through tight spaces takes careful aim.

Still using the pram so don't know what the buggy part its like yet.

Round, have you got the extra shopping basket for when you move on to the seat unit? I'm wondering whether you can still use it with the seat parent facing.

roundtable · 31/12/2011 21:07

No I haven't unfortunately. Am going to try to get one in the new year though if I can find somewhere that delivers the one part.

Very much like the look of the trike attachment as they get older which swung it for us in the end.

beatrice75 · 31/12/2011 21:19

aswellasyou I am very interested in the optional shopping basket too! I have watched a video on Youtube on the Mutsy 4 Rider from the Onlinebabystore which is a bit tedious but right at the beginning he goes through the differences between the Light and non Light (as I call it!). He says it's basically the wheels which are different and the non Light is slightly better on rough terrain but also costs a bit more and weighs a bit more. In other words, go with the Light version if you're intending to use it predominantly in town.
I have to say that when I tried the ICandy Apple at John Lewis today not only I struggled to fold it, the shop assistant said that the display model had been repaired because the chassis was faulty and since being repaired it was actually EASIER to fold! I almost did my back in trying to push in the right direction and I hated the fact that you must have one foot on the bar, one hand on the left button and the other hand needs to push down forcefully in the right direction!!! I thought it was a bit ridiculous as a folding mechanism! The shop assistant then struggled to fit the Maxi Cosi Cabriofix car seat in because it just would not click...so overall a disastrous demonstration which left me wondering if it was just bad luck or if all the Icandy Apple are like this!

It may just have been bad luck. I had a Pear which is essentially the same chassis as the Apple and the fold was easy peasy. It just glided down to the floor. But the size of the fold would put me off. It's pretty large compared to some of the pushchairs I have had. But the advantage is that you could upgrade the Apple to the Pear later if you have another child.
I had a Mutsy Urban Rider and was going to get the trike attachment but someone told me there is essentially no back support and I decided that for longer outings we really needed that. So we sold our chassis on.

Thanks for the information beatrice.

Round, there are two sellers on eBay with the basket for £34.

tiredteddy · 16/01/2012 19:35

Hi all, I have a Mutsy 4 rider and love it. Ds2 is 4 now so it is packed away to be filled with dc3 one day...

It's a great system so sturdy and easy to manoeuvre. I had a carry cot and the seat unit is great lays so flat. I also have the additional shopping basket which is excellent well worth the money. I only had it when DS was in the seat unit so not sure about wether it would fit with the seat parent facing or not. I definately recommend this pushchair and hope to use mine again one day!

Hi I have the Mutsy 4 Rider and really like it too. It has had heavy use for 4 years and is still going strong for DC3. I don't have the big basket you speak of but have found the big shallow basket it comes with very good. We found the seat unit lay flat enough for even new borns and didn't buy pram part. The telescopic handle goes short to very high and the matching skateboard should you ever need one is fantastic!

Amy, you could be an iCandy rep with reviews like that! Wink

BrassMonkeyBaubles · 02/02/2012 19:51

AmyD1 you sound just like a sales rep for iCandy. They should pay you for all your excellent chit chat about the "iCandy experience" and how beneficial the demo was to you! Wink
Beatrice75 have you looked at the babyjogger city select too? I have found the babyjogger products really good quality and extremely user friendly. There are some great reviews at www.bestbuggy.co.uk of double (or indeed single) pushchairs.

Tiggywunkle · 02/02/2012 20:07

Wow you did enjoy your demo Amy :)
You forgot that the Apple can be turned into a Pear later on though which can be a big bonus if you plan more children :)
