2nd hand Urban Detour reeks of smoke!

Hi all,

OH bought a 2nd hand Urban Detour pushchair, no idea what model, but it stinks of smoke. I've put the foot muff through the wash and that's come out fine, but the main part still smells, despite a blast with febreeze. I'm just wondering if anyone has ever taken the rest off and washed it? It's screwed down in places which suggests it's not supposed to be removed, but it really smells. I'm just wondering if it will survive a wash cycle. Any idea, anyone?

I would try using some upholstery shampoo and wipe it down with a damp cloth maybe?

Let it dry outside if it's not raining.

PrincessScrumpy · 23/12/2011 14:31

I think I would use a sponge and wash it with persil then hose it down - it'll take ages to dry but should get rid of the smell.

yes, unsrew it and put it in the wash, strip it right down seat first wash, basket second wash and i am sure the hood comes off the wires, think it just unscrews [hood and seat could go in together, but i would wash the basket on its own, also sling in the raincover too all on a 30, job done Xmas Smile i have always stripped down pushchairs for the wash. and have done an urban detour but it was some years ago.

oh and always put the covers back on while wet [just incase they strink while drying] and stand in the house to dry set up or it will smell musty

PresentsRibbonsAndMerrySantas · 23/12/2011 15:02

and remember to wipe down the frame when bare of covers,

DonkeyTeapot · 23/12/2011 15:26

See, I knew it was worth asking you lot. Although I am now presented with a new dilemma.

I am lazy. Which is the least work? Unscrewing and re-assembling, or do the thing by hand and hose down? (Loving that hosepipe idea, absolute genius!)

stripping it down, i have hand washed pushchair covers and they take for ever to dry, dripping every where, its really easy, honest, just get a cup to put all the screws and plastic bits in so you don't loose any of them. 5 mins and they will be all off, prob 10 mins to get back on if your first time, but still easy.

PresentsRibbonsAndMerrySantas · 23/12/2011 15:33

oh and i am really lazy Xmas Smile

bunnynose · 23/12/2011 17:53

Definitely unscrew the fabrics from the frame, it's really easy.

Don't put the main seat unit in the washine machine though, or you might break the backrest board. I put the seat unit in the bath with washing powder and let it soak for a while and then gave it a good scrub. Did the same with the raincover. The hood, basket and mudguard fabric all went in the washing machine.

I bought a smeely carrycot in the summer and left it outside for a couple of days and the smeel went. Not terribly practical at this time of year though.

I've got an urban detour and do the same as bunnynose, comes up lovely :)

DonkeyTeapot · 23/12/2011 20:59

It was the backrest bit I was concerned about. Thanks for the suggestions all.

i have a large drum and can manage to fit a whole hood in mine, so does depend on the size of your machine and how brave you are Xmas Smile

saoirse86 · 23/12/2011 22:03

Does the backrest come out? I had one but got rid of it before ever washing the covers. I've had others where you can unclip some bits and take out the backrest, then just pop it all in the machine. I think machine washing is easiest personally. I've done it with most of mine at least once. I also agree with putting covers back on when wet. Then stand it up (open) by a radiator if you can.

DonkeyTeapot · 26/12/2011 14:44

saoirse86 Thanks, I'll check. Not really found my way round the thing properly yet.

I unscrewed & washed a p&t, I used a launerette so the back bit fitted in. I used boo detergent to help too.
