What to do with a newborn in BJCM double?

Dh & I had a look at one of these yesterday, and really like it (looking in readiness for next year, when dc2 arrives). We had a look at the carrycot as well, which although narrow, seems nice. However, I'm aware that as the normal seat will lie almost flat, it could also be used for a newborn. But I'm confused as to how you 'attach' a newborn!! Surely you can't make them wear the harness, but how do you make sure they're secure? I'm sure there's an obvious answer, & I'm probably just being daft! I've heard of people using the bugaboo cocoon, but as I understand it, the child still has to wear the harness within this. I like the idea of a newborn having a bit of space to kick around.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I have a city mini double and a newborn. Mine has a head hugger and is strapped in. He's just as happy in there as he is in his quinny carrycot. He can still kick, there are no straps near his legs!

My baby was happy enough strapped in too. Having seen a Pushchair tip with a six week old in, I chose to strap my baby in. They can still kick their legs! In the ore carrycot days people used to use a Petit Zia or Graci soft cot. Next year there will be a bigger compact carrycot as well as the current one and the hard bodied one.

Excuse mistakes! DD has pilfered my iPad and I am on my phone with a sick baby in my arms!

ThePetiteMummy · 20/12/2011 18:03

Thanks Knitter, perhaps I'm being a tad dramatic, it's not like their arms and legs are strapped down! The lady in the shop suggested using one of those sheepskin liners, which do look cosy. It'll be a summer baby too, so no issue with warmth when it's tiny. We're just not sure it's worth buying the carry cot when it wouldn't be used for long, and also the addition of the carrycot does seem to make the whole contraption rather bulky!

I have a lovely fleece buggy snuggle on too, so he's lying on something soft. Sheepskinliner sounds lovely! I was looking at the carrycots too, but my mind was made up when I realised that my buggy is an older one and the carrycot wouldn't fit anyway. Smile

I got one of these head huggers (first ones on link) and it's great, nice and long so the baby lies on lots of it so it doesn't move around.

Thanks *Twinkle', there's no way I'd put a newborn in 'loose' for that very reason. Will keep a look out for the new carrycot too, as we've got a while yet.

Knitter, those headhuggers look lovely, and very reasonable too!

Now just need to check that the pushchair will actually fit through our rather narrow door!

I love my BJCM single so am considering getting one of these in the spring when I'll have a newborn and DD whose 2.7. I've been umming & aahing whether to get the carrycot as it doesn't sound as though you get more than a couple of months use from it but had been worrying about how comfortable DC#2 would be without a carrycot. BUT I accosted a women in IKEA the other day as she had the BJCM double with 5mo twins in it and she reassured me. Apparently, she's been asked about it several times. She said she'd used it since they'd come home from hospital weighing about 6lbs each and had just used a head hugger & a sheepskin and that they'd seemed OK in it. They certainly looked happy enough when I saw them. I do still have some concerns about not getting a carrycot as ideally I would prefer DC#2 to be rearfacing which they're not when they're in the seat. However, the window is quite good to be checking what's going on and DC#2 will mainly be in the double when I've got DD with me and I'm fully expecting a running commentary on what's going on from her!

Thanks Murtette, that's really helpful! I must say, one of my concerns was also not having dc2 rear facing, not just from the point of view of checking them, but them being able to see my face too. Dd was quite a small baby, so if the second was the same, I expect we'd get a bit of use out the carry cot. I'm leaning towards getting one I think. Anyway, plenty of time to decide!

Petite when are you due? I'm not due til May so maybe we could share the carrycot (and thus the expense)!

ThePetiteMummy · 21/12/2011 18:02

Gosh what a kind offer, thank you! I'm still early yet, not due until 3rd Aug, so don't want to get too ahead of myself! Perhaps we could get in touch nearer the time. Smile
