Double suitable for travel?

Just wondering, what your experiences have been like travelling with two children in a buggy?

We used a Combi WE2 and it's been great. The only downside we found is that it didn't do well on the sand(beach) due to the small wheels. It's a brilliant gold colour though, so pretty :).

I believe the only requirement for the buggy to travel is that it folds in one piece. (Corret me if I'm wrong here).

So... the my main question is: does a light-weight on large wheels double that folds in one pice actually exist?

I don't think so! Xmas Grin

I thought the Hauck Roadster Duo might be worth a look, but it's not light at all.

to be quite honest, no buggy is particularly easy on the beach even if it has big wheels.
and doubles especially not because even if the pushchair is light it still contains 2 kids!

I found it easiest to just not take the pushchair onto the beach tbh although ir ealise this depends if you're driving there etc etc

TwinkleWunkleChristmasStar · 05/12/2011 21:58

The best I can do is the Nipper 360. It's very light in kgs, goes straight across soft sand with ease even with two easier children on board. But the fold is bulky and it will fill an average sized car boot. The Air Buggy Mimi Double is probably a good bet too but I havent tried it across sand. But the fold is neater and it's narrower than the Nipper.
If you are travelling in the US then you may come across pushchair weight limits. Here in the UK if you are flying from Gatwick on certain flights, then all pushchairs under something like 5 (?) kgs - yes ridiculously low - have to be checked in ie you can't take them to the gate with you.

elk4baby · 06/12/2011 11:24

The AirBuggy looks neat. Though the site says that it weight a whopping 17kg?! Shock
That's 7kg heavier than the nipper (old version). The new version of the nipper is 12.8kg... that's huge difference! Is the fold really that much neater?!

Ok, if we don't mind the weight (it'll be carrying children most of the time anyway), what are the options for a double with large wheels and neat fold?!

OP posts:
aswellasyou · 06/12/2011 11:47

The ones I'd look at are:

TFK Twinner Twist
Jané Powertwin (only if they're not both under about 12-15 months and they're not tall)
Air Buggy Mimi
Baby Jogger City Elite
Baby Jogger City Classic
Baby Jogger Summit

TwinkleWunkleChristmasStar · 06/12/2011 14:40

Why not get the air tyres for your Stroll-air My Duo? Honestly, I think that has the neatest fold. The Easywalker Duo is probably the next neatest after the Air buggy. Next would probably be the Baby Jogger Elite. But it weighs a tonne. But with the wheels popped off and pushed inside, the fold is pretty neat. Or look at something like a Valco Runabout with toddler seat which folds inside the pushchair - probably my top choice for travelling but it depends on the age of your children. The Twinner Twist Duo is neat but bits stick out.
Have a look here because there are loads of folded photos of doubles next to each other (look for those mentioned above) so you can see relative folded size. I'm guessing you don't want to buy a Donkey Wink!

TwinkleWunkleChristmasStar · 06/12/2011 14:43

There's always the Mountain Buggy +one but that really depends on your childrens ages. It folds long but neat.

elk4baby · 06/12/2011 15:17

Wow, that's a fantastic page! :) Thanks!

I'm really surprised at how bulky the Nipper is... from the specs I've seen, I thought it's the answer to the large-wheeled traveller....

OP posts:
elk4baby · 06/12/2011 15:21

Also, on the bestbuggy page, the Baby Jogger Summit double seems to be the runner up on lightness after the nipper at only 11.2kg. But, the question is, do they exist in real life?! Affter a quick search, I haven't found any in the UK.... and the US site that does have says the weight is lot higher - around 16-17kg!

OP posts:
TwinkleWunkleChristmasStar · 06/12/2011 15:27

Hmm, there isn't a Summit double in the UK, so it will be the single stats that you have seen on BestBuggy. The UK Baby jogger doubles are the City Mini and Elite (but not for much longer!).

elk4baby · 06/12/2011 15:29

oh... the not for much longer sounds really intriguing :)

The nipper's weight might also be a bit off on that page, as other sites say it's 12.8kg. This may come from the V1 vs V2 difference though.

By the way, re: nipper v2 - are the changes really worth the price. I've just done a quick search and the old version ca ben bought for about a third of the new price...

TwinkleWunkleChristmasStar · 06/12/2011 15:34

Baby Jogger are bringing out their new City Mini GT, which is exactly what you need (when are you going away???), and the double Elite will be discontinued.

Re the Nipper, I think it depends on your height...I found the Nipper handle a bit low for me at 5ft 6ins. For a holiday it would be fine, but for everyday I would buy the V2 simply for the handlebar. The new wheels are probably
better - my V1 wheels were both bent from new. The V2 is heavier than the V1.

elk4baby · 06/12/2011 15:35

The first planned trip is early March.

OP posts:
TwinkleWunkleChristmasStar · 06/12/2011 15:36

Hmm...too early to guarantee a GT then :(

elk4baby · 06/12/2011 15:40

that's too bad :(
Do you have any specs on the GT though? The weight, the wheel diameter.. ?

OP posts:
elk4baby · 06/12/2011 15:46

Just looked up the BJ POD - looks nice :)
Quite similar to the Croozer for 2, but with a better fold...
Does anyone know the weight of the POD?

(you see, the buggy obsession lives and is contageous)

OP posts:
TwinkleWunkleChristmasStar · 06/12/2011 17:20

It's really too early for GT specs.
POD is supposed to be very good. It's supposed to work very well as a pushchair whereas my Croozer isn't good!
But I have just been chatting to a retailer about the Bumbleride Indie double. Bumbleride are bringing their products over here next year. But we were chatting about how light it is (I think it's something like 15kgs off the top of my head - I can't check coz I am on my phone at a swimming lesson. The fold is pretty neat too but the hood end is a bit bulky. It very slim - we think after the Duet, it will be the next slimmest side by side double pushchair at under 73cms. It's easy to import one although not cheap. I have the single Indie and can post some photos. But it could be a good option especially if you removed the hood to get a flatter fold?

saoirse86 · 07/12/2011 13:41

Ooh I saw one of those PODs in a clearance shop nearby and I didn't know what it was. I might go and have another nose tomorrow!

TwinkleWunkleChristmasStar · 07/12/2011 14:02

Hmm POD is not in the UK as yet, so if it is a POD then its an import and I would love it [wunk]

saoirse86 · 07/12/2011 14:26

I could swear it was, and it looked just like the pics of PODs I've just googled. Hmm, maybe it wasn't though. The shop is a crazy shop. It's a big warehouse that does all kinds of warehouse clearances, smoke damaged stuff, new stuff, second hand stuff, you never know what you're going to find in there! I'll look tomorrow but it was a while since I saw it there. although a lot of things tend to stick around for a while because they're quite specialist iyswim. We got extended rear facing car seats in there and there were more left for months. And they've had 2 Brio pushchairs for ages! I'll be disappointed now if it's gone or it's something else. Xmas Hmm

saoirse86 · 07/12/2011 14:27

I'd go right now but they're closed on weds afternoon.

aswellasyou · 07/12/2011 15:10

I'm desperate to go and see their current stock! We used to go there with our Dad as children it is was the best day out EVER! Xmas Grin I bought a £250 carseat for £56 a few months back. Those Brio Gos have been there for at least a year. And they're filthy from dust. If they washed the covers, they might actually sell them. Xmas Hmm And the First Wheels City Twin's been there the same length of time.

Saoirse, remember to look at the prices of the Britax Isofix bases and Baby-Safe Sleepers for the SiLs. Do you remember how much the possible POD was?

aswellasyou · 07/12/2011 15:16

Prams, I've just remembered you were talking about getting a Ziko Frankie. Saoirse had one for a holiday in the summer. It was lovely looking but the brake was flimsy and had broken. I love the chrome on the front wheels though. I don't like freedom harnesses personally (my daughter needs to be strapped down to go to sleep) so I couldn't use one.

aswellasyou · 07/12/2011 15:18

Aaarggh! Wrong place, sorry. Xmas Blush
