Hi. Sorry if this has been done-to-death on other threads. I've pored over all the threads here and am just more lost than ever!! I'm fairly new and naiive when it comes to all this stuff; I've just been using a heavy, stooped, second-hand Silver Cross 3D since my baby was born and never gave it any thought before, until my back and knees are shot to pieces. I dont even really understand the diff between strollers and pushchairs! Here are my requirements:

ESSENTIAL:

  • High handle(s). (Im tall and have a bad back/posture).
  • Suitable for at least a 6-month old up until about age 3/4
  • GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY. Im truly brassic so maximum budget approx £120 all-in.
  • OK on quite rough terrain (we go walking in woods/countryside).

PREFERABLE:

  • Can be pushed single-handedly
  • Good sized basket/storage (I dont have a car so have to carry LOADS of shopping on foot)

Sorry to be so prescriptive, but I'm horribly lost, and thought that some of you pushchair/stroller afficionados might be able to set me on the right path.

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like you need a good all terrain. You would have to double check handle heights but on your budget I would be looking at a second hand Baby Jogger Elite, a Mutsy Urban Rider or an Easywalker Sky (there's a lovely cheap one on at present). Basically something with nice big wheels / tyres and a good suspension. have a search through EBay to start with under their three wheeler section. Try and spot if it has an adjustable handle and if so then check what height it goes up to.

Tiggywunkle · 08/11/2011 11:13

The Mutsy basket isn't huge but you can get an add on basket. It would be fine for a supermarket but hard around smaller shops although you can get swivel wheels to interchange.

roundtable · 08/11/2011 11:24

I have a Mutsy 4rider light. Has an adjustable handle. I bought a clip to hang extra bags. It is very light but sturdy and drives on all terrains (although I've yet to experience snow/ice!)

I bought mine from Ebay which makes it more affordable

aswellasyou · 08/11/2011 11:42

The Jane pushchairs have high handles. There are a few that look very similar to me: Slalom, Powertrack, Matrix and Generation. They sell quite cheaply on eBay.

FriggsFlyingFalconFeathers · 08/11/2011 19:21

along with the above suggestions,id recommend looking on ebay for:

britax vigour,

mountain buggy urban,

or a nipper 360.

To Tiggywunkle, RoundTable and aswellasyou...THANKS A MILLION!!!
You've all been so helpful and have given good clear advice. Having had a little look I think the Baby Jogger Elite or one of the Jane ones could be the perfect thing (as long as I can find second-hand).
One quick queury though - in case I could only fine a Baby Jogger City Mini (instead of the Elite) would it be just as good as the Elite or is the Elite particularly better for my requirements would you say? Im not sure what the differences are.
Thanks again everyone for your help. And happy pushing!

the elite would be much better for any off roading...the mini has much smaller wheels.Smile

FriggsFlyingFalconFeathers · 08/11/2011 19:49

a baby jogger city classic would be fine though...like this one

Tiggywunkle · 08/11/2011 20:11

Friggs right - go for an Elite or classic. It's all about the wheel size but there's loads of other advantages as well. The Nipper - even the new V2 one (so I am told) has a low handle.

LifesComplicated · 11/11/2011 10:02

Thanks everyone for all your help and advice re: my quandry. I've falled head over heels for the Baby Jogger City Elite as it's the only thing on the market that fulfils absolutely all of our requirements. I've spent a total of 20 hours online this week trawling second-hand sites and getting quotes for couriers, and have got so frazzled by all this that I've just gone and bought it new! Wanted to buy from Boots.com so as to get the zillions of points, but they only have it in red (Im after black) so Ive got it elsewhere (cant remember the site). Fingers crossed it arrives quickly so I can try it out with my little one! So stupidly excited!
Thanks again everyone!

Hi LifesComplicated, I was going to post and say get the Elite and see that you have, just wanted to say that I'm tall too as is DH (5'10 and 6'2) and bought the Elite after getting advice here earlier this month and I LOVE it, it is such a dream to push, not just great off road but even getting around pokey shops which surprised me. The fold is soooo fantastic, get the more recent footmuff as you can access the handle from within the footmuff to fold the pushchair. Hope you are just as pleased with it as we are - I was stupidly excited too :)

Tiggywunkle · 11/11/2011 20:28

I've dreamt of an Elite for months and I finally bought one from Boots 2 days ago. I can't wait for it to arrive. I love the City Mini but have had the Elite Double since and it's just so good! Fingers crossed the single is as good as I do prefer generally 4 wheels :)

MonkeyJuice · 11/11/2011 21:11

Fwiw I think the elite was the right choice if you're tall. My slalom is only just tall enough for me at 5'7"...the higher you put the Handlebar the closer to the buggy you stand meaning less room to stride...I think v tall parents would struggle with the slalom from that point of view.

LifesComplicated · 22/11/2011 10:32

Hi all,
Thanks for your advice SedgieBaby. And also MonkeyJuice: The slalom doesn't sound like it's quite tall enough for you and I'm the same height as you. Are you thinking of getting the Elite too? I would deffo recommend it.
Well, my Elite FINALLY arrived last night Grin....2 weeks after ordering Angry. I ordered from Vigano.com and have had quite a few probs with my order, and it needed lots of chase-up phonecalls. Im still awaiting the raincover I ordered with it (that's gone AWOL).
I've not had chance to use it outside yet, but had LOTS of fun wheeling it around the house last night! On first sights, it seems AMAZING! Wow, so user-friendly and sleek. It's wonderfully tall (bye-bye bad back!). The wheels are massive and will deffo deal with our cobbled street and awful potholes, as well as our regular Peak District rambles.
Just a few questions though (last ones I promise!):

  1. If I get a puncture or the wheels go flat, what would I do? Im assuming it needs some sort of puncture repair kit or tyre pump, but Ive no idea about this sort of thing and it doesn't come with instructions or a pump.

  2. Can it be converted to take a carseat? If so, how and what would I need? Currently my carseat is a non-label Argos basic cheapy one. Do you think the Elite would accept this?

  3. Where do you fellow Elite-users purchase your accessories (footmuff/child tray etc) from?

Thanks in advance for your wise advice.

  1. I think you would need either a repair kit or to slime the wheels. Slime makes the wheels heavy but stops punctures. I have absolutely no idea where you can get this done though!
  2. You can buy Maxi-Cosi adapters easily, but the semi-universal adapters are only sold in certain countries including the USA an NZ.
  3. I would just do a Google search for the cheapest place!
bunnynose · 22/11/2011 13:21

The latest model of the Elite has forever air tyres, so you won't get any punctures.

Tiggywunkle · 22/11/2011 14:21

The above advice is great. Just to add, don't forget if space is ever at a premium eg the car boot when going on holiday, it is incredibly simple to pop the wheels off and the main body of the pushchair then isn't too large. The wheels being left on make a huge difference.
I got an Elite last week and it's a fab pushchair,

Tiggywunkle · 22/11/2011 14:21

You can also add a carrycot on if you so desire :)

LifesComplicated · 23/11/2011 09:15

Thanks all. And that's great news about adding on a carrycot - will make things easier and cheaper when we have DC2 et al. My only complaint about Baby Jogger is that they don't exactly make this kind of info easy to find-out. It'd be great if they included this stuff in the instructions (ie what accessories are suitable for which models, what the pushchair can be converted into and how etc). Still, the advice here has compensated for that.
Tiggywunkle - glad you also got the Elite last week. It is deffo fab. Happy wheeling!
