Used Caboose Ultralight?

elk4baby · 03/11/2011 10:47

Hi,
We're travelling in three weeks and then again in March. DC1 is 2.5yrs, DC2 is 9mths. Our double is way too heavy (and we like it too much) to bring with us.

Any suggestions other than a light single and a sling (DC2 is quite heavy)?

I've looked at the Caboose Ultralight and like the idea, but the owner of the only one that's on sale on eBay right now is refusing courier pick-up (doing it myself would involve a 3hr one-way drive with 2 small children). Is anyone here looking to sell theirs? Or, better yet, rent it out for a week at the end of Nov?! :)

Thanks!

where do you live

Tiggywunkle · 03/11/2011 11:00

Do you know it's pretty long folded? It's too long for my car boot. If length isnt an issue then a regular umbrella fold tandem may be an idea. If you are flying I would think you could get away with an umbrella fold going in the hold with no travel bag, but I think I would want a Joovy in a bag.

elk4baby · 03/11/2011 11:57

We're in Kent, right by M25.

Hm, I haven't really looked into the length of it to be honest. It's just the lightest 'doulbe' I could find. We're travelling by plane, so I'm sure they won't mind. Though now that you mention it's long, it can be a problem getting to/from the airport in our car (average-size saloon).

you could take the hood off that would make it shorter,

Tiggywunkle · 03/11/2011 12:52

Did you see the link re pushchairs over 5kgs having to be checked in at Gatwick for certain flights? If you are flying from one of those flights you may want to have a think re options anyway.

elk4baby · 03/11/2011 14:28

Well, I'm still thinking we might get away with our BJCM and a sling... but the thought of carrying DS2 for hours on end seems like a very tiring proposition... and DS1 is nowhere near ready (or maybe it's me and the thought of him 'on the loose', esp. at the airport) to walk everywhere.

How about a backpack which converts into a pushchair? There's usually some on EBay. Or a single with a step on the back? Or a buggy board?

elk4baby · 03/11/2011 15:28

backpack to pushchair?! sounds exciting. I've never heard of this. What's the name of it?

Like these? They say they are Mothercare Urban Detour ones. Believe me these will be sought after if the weight limits for non checked in pushchairs spread. I ave no idea what they are like to use though!

pramsgalore · 03/11/2011 16:08

pliko pushchairs have a step on the back, but they are not light, but may be lighter than a double, also the citisport although not recommended my ds has been known to sit on the basket edge with his bum in the basket, works a treat Grin but the seat could not be laid right back doing this,

aswellasyou · 03/11/2011 16:38

The Combi We2 weighs 8.2kg and are really cheap on eBay. And they fold up really small. But there's still the 5kg limit problem. I don't know when that limit comes in.

Tiggywunkle · 03/11/2011 17:01

It's in now but only on certain carriers. The Combi We2 is really neat because it freestands. I watched someone on holiday remove their twins and fold it neatly standing up next to their table.

pramsgalore · 03/11/2011 17:02

the citisport freestands as well

aswellasyou · 03/11/2011 17:04

It won't be affecting me for a few years anyway! I've seen a few we2s but never folded in real life. The seats seem quite narrow but good enough for holiday use.

elk4baby · 03/11/2011 17:16

The citisport has a really nice weight, but it is a single :(
We already have the Baby Jogger City Mini as a travel buggy, but because my eldest is in that 'in between' stage buggy-wise, I'm considering getting something small and cheap for travelling.
The We2 is looking really good... though I'm a bit concerned that it's a double, so may be too wide for most doorways. Is it easy to fold? (i.e. to get through a doorways somewhere) Or is that too much hassle?

I'm on the fence between the Joovy ultralight and the We2. The Joovy is 109cm long folded, the Combi says 102cm. Seems like a really small difference... maybe when it comes to car boots it will be crucial, not sure...

What do you think is a better 'travel' lightweight option - the Caboose or the We2?

OP posts:
Tiggywunkle · 03/11/2011 17:25

I haven't tried the WE2 but I would choose it for a holiday simply because I would worry about the Joovy surviving a plane journey with the straps, hoods, wheels, plastic bits etc. I would think any umbrella fold has more chance of coming out the other end unscathed. Why don't you just take your City Mini though? But if that's the choice I would take the BJCM! Can you not take two singles? We took two singles on holiday - one was the Noa and we folded it up and pulled it along if we didn't need it. Have you seen the buggy connectors?

aswellasyou · 03/11/2011 17:30

The Combi is the same width as a standard doorway. I've had a Maclsren of the same width and never got stuck but it sometimes needed a siggle to get through a doorway.

pramsgalore · 03/11/2011 17:34

i am sure when i measured mine for tiggy, it was less then that but that would have been with the hood off.

Tiggywunkle · 03/11/2011 18:12

Honestly, I would get two Noas off EBay and tie them together! I could push the Npa and our Xtreet easily with one in each hand!

Tiggywunkle · 03/11/2011 18:13

Noa!

elk4baby · 03/11/2011 19:17

Wow, the Noa looks fantastic... I'll look out for a used one :)
I just thought taking two pushchairs was too much of a hassle, but if they're that light and easy, it's worth a shot.

pramsgalore · 03/11/2011 19:29

i said the citisport because we have got ds to sit on the basket edge at the back with his bum in the basket, but no good if your dc1 needs to be in a buggy all the time, it was just an idea if it was only now and again when little legs were tired.
