Selling your old pushchair...

I've had some excellent advice over the last week and it has led to my taking the decision to sell my stokke and buy a Baby Jogger Elite on a fantastic offer which should arrive this week - I'm really excited!

Now the task of selling my old pushchair, someone advised a few sites/means do you tend to advertise in several places simultaneously? Or is that not advisable e.g. list on ebay and preloved/gumtree at the same time or will I get in a bit of tangle doing that.

I'm a very experienced buyer on ebay but only ever sold one thing as I'm a lazy toad, I'd prefer to sell it in the paper or gumtree or something because I think there are lots of ways to sting a seller on ebay, but I guess the return isn't so good.

Any ideas really appreciated.

i sell mine on preloved, gumtree and pushchairtrader, but all took a while to sell, you would get more on ebay, but i am like you, a bit worried about being stung, but i know alot of people do sell on ebay, i would do pick up only and state cash on collection.

i sell lots on ebay and have sold 4 buggies, If you want the maximum amount of cash then posting it (i use send it now) is well worth the effort. I insist on paypal as it offers the most protection for both buyer and seller, even if they are picking it up - better to pay the fees than get landed with fake notes

HauntedPramsScreamsGalore · 31/10/2011 22:35

when you sell on ebay and its pick up only and they pay by paypal, how can you prove they have collected and have the pushchair, when the only form of proof of delivery paypal will except is trackable, online, sighed for through a courier, thats what i don't get

Tiggywunkle · 31/10/2011 22:41

They suggest you make a receipt and both sign it.
If they pick up the buyer has no come back at all if there is a problem.
If you post it then they can claim against you / send it back and it can be a real headache! I tend to only post things that are as perfect as possible or I dont see an issue with. A no returns policy doesnt wash with Ebay! The other way round even if the buyer pays with Paypal, it is buyer beware.

I would never sell a pram/buggy on ebay again after my previous experience with it. I advertised a pram as local pick up only and it was bought by someone in Bulgaria who then asked if I'd courier it to somewhere in London. I refused but they wouldn't cancel the transaction so I then had to wait for it to become an unpaid item and had to ask for a refund of fees from ebay. I was quite lucky that by the time I asked for a refund her account had been cancelled - I believe ebay expect you to work through any issues with unpaid items with the buyer and if they won't cancel the transaction you have little comeback normally.

I was also surprised how much the ebay fees mounted up, it's a very expensive way to sell.

Any future selling I do will be local paper/preloved/gumtree.

teaandbiscuitsplease · 01/11/2011 06:38

I tried to sell my bugaboo on gumtree and had no interest apart from someone asking if they could pay using papal. Thought this was strange as its supposed to be a payment on collection way to sell locally and surprise, surprise, it was a scam.

Sadly, I think we live in times where there's no totally safe way to sell and you have to be wary of everything and hope for the best.

aswellasyou · 01/11/2011 08:10

If you accept PayPal for collection only, you can lose your money. PayPal won't accept any kind of written receipt as proof of collection and will automatically refund the buyer.

HauntedPramsScreamsGalore · 01/11/2011 08:20

yes thats how i read it, its wrong that on collection only, you still have to offer paypal, thats whats stopping me from selling my pushchairs on ebay, as they will be collection only

BoozeDilemma · 01/11/2011 08:26

I recommend registering to sell it at an NCT nearly new sale. You get 70% of the sale price and do nothing except drop it off at the sale (and pick up if it doesn't sell!) Lots of high value prams at these things and buyers have done their homework and know what they want and how much they're worth.

aswellasyou · 01/11/2011 09:23

That's interesting about NCT sales. I might look into doing that in the future.

Tiggywunkle · 01/11/2011 12:00

Really aswellasyou. I read recently that a receipt would cover you. That's tough.

aswellasyou · 01/11/2011 12:10

Unfortunately it is the case. I think there's a common misconception that a receipt is enough evidence. In fairness, how could you prove that the signature was actually the buyer's? Especially when they send someone else to collect it. Luckily, the vast majority of people are honest and just looking to save a bit of money buying on eBay, so these 'chargebacks' are very few and far between.

Tiggywunkle · 01/11/2011 12:39

:(

sedgiebaby · 01/11/2011 13:07

Oh dear, feeling negative about selling quickly and without any hassle, and my elite is out for delivery already, so I need to come up with a bit of a plan.

Hauntedprams - Am I understanding correctly that you have to offer paypal even with collection in person?

sedgiebaby · 01/11/2011 13:10

It just arrived in fact!

pramsgalore · 01/11/2011 13:16

yes, you can not take off the option, however you could put cash only on your listing, but that won't stop someone if they want to pay by paypal

aswellasyou · 01/11/2011 13:26

It won't be a problem. Most people only accept cash for collection items, just say it in the listing. I've never had a problem doing it that way.

iarebaboon · 01/11/2011 13:35

I've sold stuff on netmums. It's free and local. Only had good experiences.

teaandbiscuitsplease · 01/11/2011 13:50

Agree with aswellasyou - I've sold 2 pushchairs on ebay and just made sure I stated very clearly that it was collection only with cash on collection and that under no circumstances was I going to post. Both went to lovely, genuine people who collected promptly and were happy to hand over the cash when they did so.

AvadaKedavra · 08/11/2011 21:37

You can sell here on Mumsnet too remember, there's a thriving pushchair sales board :)
