Pushchair collapsed with baby in it - WWYD

Yesterday my pushchair collapsed with my 6mo baby in it, thankfully she is ok although we were advised to keep an eye on her all day yesterday just in case of concussion (minor head bump).
I took the pushchair back yesterday evening, I had to pay an extra £75 for an equivalent (different brand) pushchair, because when we bought the original (just 6 weeks ago) there was an offer on across all pushchairs across the store and they wouldn't honour the offer.
Fine, I want her to have the best we can afford although TBH we can't really afford the extra £75 but it's done now.
More's the point that I feel there is still more I should do. This pushchair is a hazard. I thought it might be a one off but when I got back to the house I checked the website and someone else had put a review on, the same thing had happened to them, their child got a more serious bump and scratch on the face.
I've been told I will hear from their customer services because of what happened but should I also report this to someone else as there could be people using these pushchairs unaware that pretty soon they are going to collapse and injure their child.
Is it trading standards I should report to or Health and Safety executive or should i just leave it with the company?

How are Mothercare still trading??? I have had nothing but dreadful service from them, their shop staff are shockingly rude and they immediately close ranks whenever you complain about anything. I have overheard several horrible conversations the staff have had about previous customers who just left the store. One woman was mutteringly called "a stupid old cow" behind her back as she left! Shock

John Lewis may be a little bit pricier but when the handle covering split on a buggy that was 2 months old I contacted them. They asked if I could email a picture which I did. The next morning I noticed I had missed a voicemail on my phone which stated that a new pram had been sent out to me. The old pram was going to be collected the following week and that they had refunded me some money as the pram had recently been reduced in price. The new pram arrived that morning!!

Glad they got their act together OP, I wouldn't let it go though. That buggy sounds very dangerous! Glad your little one is ok!

pramsgalore4 · 11/07/2011 12:13

did you report it to trading standards, i still would not let them get away with it, they need to do a recall, mothercare are really bad when you get a problem, i don't believe they even contacted bugaboo when i had a problem as other pram shops said it would have been a new chasis and mothercare offered to get a member of staff to replace the wheel [was not a push on wheel but nuts, bolts and washers and would only be hand tight] even trading standards where shocked, like getting my mum to fix my pushchair, i think not. If they think they can get away with it they will fob you off. they got into trouble with trading standards and they did follow it up as they phoned me [trading standards] to check they could use my name when dealing with them. they even lent me a recalled pushchair faulty brakes, i even asked why the pushchair was different to mine looked like something was missing on the back wheels and they said oh dont worry about it, its the older model, did some research when i got home to discover that bugaboo had sent out brake packs as the brakes were not working properly, they had to know this when they lent it to me and even more so when i asked [and that was the asstant manager] but they were not bothered for the well being of my baby. i now dont buy from them, there are so many shops which sell prams avoiding mothercare is easy, i may go in to look and try out a pushchair, but don't buy it from them.

I am waiting until they give me a report into their 'investigations' before I contact trading standards, but have kept all the correspondence when they claimed to have investigated prior to recipt Confused

Thank you all for your concern, little one is absolutely fine, bizarrely I think she prefers our cheap holiday pushchair that we're using for the time being!

Agree that Mothercare customer service are appalling - really don't know how they stay afloat, especially with such massive stores.

I went there to purchase a Silver Cross Freeway pram and carseat - not cheap. 2 sales assistants walked away to avoid eye contact, one 'didn't know how to fold it down' and the 4th tutted as she was asked to show me.

Took my money to small local independent boutique who were nothing but helpful, gave me a discount on the carseat and a full demonstration.

Have never shopped at Mothercare since.

Glad your DD is ok - must have been awful. Hope you get a successful outcome from this utterly heartless company.

Update on this...one month later, I have received 'good will' gift voucher and still waiting for £75 refund which I have been promised.

However, I have just sent in another letter of complaint because I was told that they have still not investigated how the incident occured.

I am disgusted that they would take this long to investigate a fault that caused an injury and that they think they can buy me off with a good will gift voucher. I'm not going away that easily.

They seem to be missing the point of my complaint entirely and think I just want money/gift vouchers, not so, i want them to at the very least investigate what happened.

Surely now if it does turn out to be a manufacturing fault and it causes a serious injury or death they could be liable for prosecution as they have been made aware of the fault but not investigated it.

I think you should seek legal advice and consider suing.

hermionestranger · 09/08/2011 10:35

I would seriously consider legal action and set up a page on here and a facebook group for the pushchair, MAKE THEM take notice.

LIZS · 09/08/2011 10:39

Go to Trading Standards if you have n't already.

TribbleWithoutACause · 10/08/2011 21:01

Actually the fact that you sought medical advice is pretty damning from a trading standards point of view. I'd seriously start a thread about it and a facebook group, also do as others have said and contact TS.

Macaroona · 12/08/2011 14:25

Oh my God! This is seriously shocking. Please go to Trading Standards.

I was looking at the Mothercare Spin as an option for my first baby due in December, reading this has crossed it firmly off my shortlist!

Get legal advice definitely.

NinjaTurtle · 14/08/2011 21:47

I have just had the same problem! I recommended this pram to someone on here recently. Do not buy!

The Spin was sent back for a repair about two months ago because a wheel wobbled and the frame kept locking. Ive had it back for several weeks now and it collapsed on me today! Well not totally collapsed, but the way it folds, the two sets of wheels close together, it happened whilst walking, luckily I caught it before it fell, so DD was unharmed. Like yours, it was locked properly when I set out because I had walked a good half a mile before it happened. Sorry, I haven't read the whole thread, but were Mothercare ok with returning/exchanging it (other than having to pay extra)? I have heard from others that they can get a bit huffy over things like this. I want an exchange, it's been repaired once and is a hazard!

MonkeysPunk · 14/08/2011 22:17

Ninjaturtle I think you too should report to trading standards. If the pram is so unreliable you would be better getting a refund and buying a safe pram.

hellymelly · 14/08/2011 22:24

I second the legal advice, your baby could have been seriously hurt, and it is a shocking response from Mothercare.

Ivortheengine8 · 14/08/2011 22:31

Can you google and see if ay reviewers have had a similar problem and maybe contact those that have?

NinjaTurtle · 15/08/2011 14:49

I've emailed Mothercare explaining the problem. No response yet. I ideally want an exchange for a different pram. It happened as I was going down a kerb, the front wheels went in but I managed to catch it. It could have been very dangerous if I hadn't and DD had fallen into the path of an oncoming car :(

NinjaTurtle · 15/08/2011 14:56

There's actually a review on the website for the Spin in silver, which is the one I have, saying that it tipped with their baby in it. Two reviews saying this actually. And another saying the wheel buckled going down a kerb. Why are they still selling this?

FryLaw · 09/11/2011 18:34

Soz about your dd, glad is ok. What I dont get is that you had to take her to hospital? for advice, which cost you money, and worry.
What part of Trading Standards wouldn't look twice at this.

I know its 2 months off, but mc I thought were pretty good, even having a place to feed inside the shop, at least in bristol they did. Are they really so bad?
OMG!

roxyd · 24/11/2011 20:40
