To slime or not to slime?

Just taken delivery of my new MB! Most excited.

Not had pneumatic tyres before, is it best to do the slime thing, or not? Presumably you still need to leave a bit of squashiness in the tyres either way to give a softer ride?

Lol I am sat here holding a tube of Slime in my hand whilst trying to decide how much to put in! I personally always Slime. As I have just read the Slime stays liquid, doesn't harden inside and will simply seal punctures. Last week at the Mountain Buggy University, Slime or Rim seal(????) was recommended.

Thanks. Is sliming easy, or should I get the fella at Halfords to do it? My BIL slimed his pushchair tyres and they're absolutely solid, is that from putting too much in then?

Gosh you don't need much. It was 3ozs for a normal bike tyre so we decided on a good slug! Probably 2ozs. I was forced to do some tyres the other week after waiting too long for OH, and to be honest it was easy enough, although if you can get someone else to do it then I prefer that ;) Just make sure you have a tyre pump to hand to blow the tyres back up after. You should be able to press and indent your thumb lightly ie a bit of give and not solid.

Oh, I'm so stupid, I thought you put slime in the tyres instead of air.

My next question therefore has to be, do you need a special pump to blow up MB tyres?

Well you do put some Slime in but 2-3ozs is only a few tablespoons worth. So a good squirt and then pump the tyres back up. You have to remove the tyre valve with a tiny tool (included) which releases air. I didn't hear anything about needing a special pump for MB tyres at their University so I am sure a normal bike pump will be fine :) Just don't overinflate! You should be able to press into the tyre ie indent a bit with your thumb rather than the tyre being solid.

I got a secondhand pre 2010 Urban from a MNer. It's lovely, can't wait to get out and about but the tyres really need air before I could put my enormously heavy baby in it.

I have slimed my Phil & ted after 4 punctures in 3 months and although I am glad not to get punctures it has made the buggy significantly heavier to push which is annoying!

Ooh Hevster, that's interesting. Hadn't thought it would affect that.

I've slimed for years now, and never noticed it making it heavier to push. That sounds more like the tyres aren't pumped up enough. I also give a good spray of WD 40 to moving parts if it seems a bit stiff.

Try slime tape.

Bought it in a bike shop.

It's a thornproof membrane which lines the tyre.
Doesn't add any extra weight, did the tyres on my MB Urban 4 years ago when it was new for DS1, has been used continually since then with DS2 and have never had a puncture.

Thanks for the tips. Is the slime tape adhesive, or is it the stuff that just sits in between the tyre and the inner tube?
