We take our mountain buggy urban on the beach regularly and it handles brilliantly. I'd definitely recommend it!

Nipper 360 or Micralite.

I have had both on sand, the micralite you have to tip to get front wheels up, but very easy to push.

MB fabbi, we have both swift and urban and both make it a doddle Smile

mountain buggy, its just great on the beach, we go on pebbly and deep sandy beach with ours

I've heard several people say how good the Phil and Teds Smart is on sand. I can't understand why put they do 2 pushchairs called smart which are completely different to each other. This one only has 2 back wheels and no front wheels so you tip it back to push it. It sounds odd but I've heard many times how good it is.

This one on ebay is £65 including delivery

Anything with large, blowup tyres is generally quite good. Solid tyres tend to sink in sand. (It's far easier to pull a buggy on sand rather than push, which will generally lead to the front wheels to rising up - so the rear wheels are more important than the front)

We've taken our nipper 360 on sand and it's as good as can be expected - I'm sure that the Mountain Buggy would be equally as suitable though.

nipper sport is amazing, just done a long weekend in Cornwall with it and was amazed at how easily it went on the beach - a push with 1 hand job no probs, I was well impressed

trixymalixy · 03/05/2011 19:26

Micralite with the ATK ( all terrain kit).

My 3 wheeler is no easier on the beach/gravel/sand/snow than my folding Mclaren. They both have to be dragged backwards to get anywhere. You need a sleigh for sand, really.

My Baby Jogger Summit XC is FANTASTIC (pushed forwards too!) on Gravel, Pebble Beach, Snow and Sand Dunes. I think it's the extra large rear wheels and all wheel suspension - along with very stable wide base and front wheel that locks forwards (if necessary) to extend the length of the wheel base that helps.

Be warned though, the Baby Jogger Summit XC is HUGE compared to most 3 wheelers - although it isn't too heavy at only 10.9kg - it's sturdy and packs down really small (with that magic pull handle fold you find on baby joggers for swift folding), and the wheels all pop off really easily in seconds so it takes up very little boot space in the car.

Aside from this buggy - the only other one I've tried that was truly brilliant on the beach was the Micralite Fast Fold (similar to the superlite model) with the addition of the "ATK" (all terrain kit wheels - now sadly discontinued and obselete and hard to find even on eBay) and handlebar extenders. However, you did miss out on the suspension and stability offered by the Baby Jogger Summit XC.

I've looked really hard at LOTS of 3 wheelers for use on Gravel / Sand/ Pebbly Beaches / In the Snow - including fairly deep snow - not just a bit on the pavement / In the Forest (very uneven, boggy, tree roots, and steep or hilly in places/ Moorland (including through heather and over rocks) / Mountains and Streams etc.... (because I really LOVE to do what I want to do in the countryside and not be hampered by lack of the right equipment to do it, and because I we as a family like to do whole days outings - so our youngest does get a bit worn out with all the fresh air and running around - and also the buggy is helpful to carry our supplies too...lots of drinks and food plus waterproofs if necessary). I also use this buggy for the school run - and for shopping daily (I don't drive just yet - although doing my test soon! but even when test is passed fuel is sooo expensive so I'll still have to walk mostly). This was the best to suit my needs and I'd recommend it to anyone else looking for a serious off-road buggy because it's just such brilliant value for money. Really durable and has a lot of great features for what you pay (typically it sells around £300 new), the bigger wheels - and better all wheel suspension than you get on your average off road buggy (the rear wheel suspension works both up and down and front to back - but NOT side to side - so no lateral wobble) and the front wheel also has fab and effective suspension - which is handy for kerbs in urban situations too. The fabrics are all great quality - and it looks really modern and sporty (I chose the stone/black version to be subtle in the countryside!), and the large canopy really keeps off rain and sun alike - I rarely need the plastic raincover - never bother taking it with me!

Sorry to go on and on - I really don't work for Baby Jogger - but I do just LOVE the amount of value you get in their products. Fabrics are guaranteed for 1y and the frame gets a life time guarantee (that's how confident they are that you'll have no problems!). Grin

We have a nipper out and about 360 which copes admirably with the beach and dunes. Not too expensive either. Also pretty comfortable and lovely to push in town as well.

MonkeysPunk · 06/05/2011 17:18

I'm not sure if the offer is still on - but... boots had a code "PROM150" - that gave 15% off and if you were a member of their parenting club - so you'd get about £48 worth of points too - so although theirs was the highest price at £350 for the BJ Summit XC - that bought it down to £297 - plus the points (if you could use them up on stuff you would have bought anyway - like nappies - or loo roll!) - you'd get a bit of a deal, think the code only worked if you spent over £150 - but might work on other stuff too - if the code is still good (not sure as I got it off another thread on here....). Worth a try though!

saoirse86 · 06/05/2011 19:11

That code has expired now monkeyspunk, but you still get the 10 points per £.

carlyzz · 02/04/2012 14:46

My maxi cosi mura is great on sand as it has huge back wheels only down side is it is heavy to tip onto the back wheels and if you have a newborn in the seat unit they sometimes slide a little
