How much did you use your pram in the first few weeks after birth?

I think I have royally F*ed up Blush

Two qs please:

  • How much did you use your pram in the first weeks with a newborn and could you have coped ok without it?
  • How soon did your baby grow out of the carrycot?

Basically, I have been very indecisive over choosing and ordering a pram but in my defence (ha!) the local store has online ordering which showed that the ones I was dithering about carefully researching on which? etc were all in stock and immediately available.

I finally chose one and put in the order to be told that the pram won't be available for 6 weeks. I am due in 3-4. So even if the pg goes beyond 40 wks the baby should arrive before the pram. I do plan to hibernate at home for the early
days and also fancy using a sling. After paying the deposit I am now thinking "what have I done?" as I get Hmm looks when I mention to people that I won't have the pram immediately. Oh and I don't want to change model or colour now that I've finally decided.

Not once in the first week due to ecs and still being in hospital...Once or twice the second week due to needing to leave the house and get mobile to show baby off.

DD was very small so even at a year could probably use the carry cot to sleep in, however due to her being able to turn and crawl at 4 months we decided it wasn't safe enough for her.

I wouldn't worry to much as like you said you tend to hibernate for the first week or so Smile

MonkeysPunk · 06/04/2011 13:42

I wouldn't worry. You'll probably not need it the first couple of weeks. Which sling have you got? I found my wrap sling very useful and versatile early on.
I used pram from two weeks as that was when I had to do the school run again. If is had the opportunity I'd have stayed in bed!

Santiagosmama · 06/04/2011 13:46

I didn't use my pram for probably 5-6 weeks after - A sling was soooo much easier to get around with and bubba's love being close to their mum. I wouldn't worry at all - Good Luck!

mummysleepy · 06/04/2011 15:33

Quite reassuring for me. I have just put down deposit on buggy which is due mid may- I am due end of may so any delays and I won't have a buggy. I do have a sling though ( well 3 actually!) so should be ok

You'll be fine. You can carry in the car seat if you need to go to shops, but otherwise if you are happy with a sling that will be fine for walks etc. I was in hospital for a week, then only went out for little walks for the week after that. I did use the pram then, but it was November and freezing, and I thought he would be cosier in the pram. Sling would've been fine in May!

dinkystinky · 06/04/2011 15:42

Twice - baby (both times) hated it and wanted to be in the sling/baby carrier instead. Only really like the pram from around 2 motnhs on.

supergreenuk · 06/04/2011 15:44

I could have lived without it as she was happier in the car seat that attached to the frame.

Bramshott · 06/04/2011 15:46

Very little - mostly used a sling or carried car seat in the early weeks.

SingingSands · 06/04/2011 15:48

I used mine constantly! DS came home aged 7hrs and went straight in the pram to sleep, we used the carrycot as his bed for 4 months too (proper sleep mattress in it). DD was in hers all the time too as I didn't have a car back then, so we walked to the shops every day or just put it in the garden so she could sleep in the fresh air.

I didn't have a sling though, so if you have a sling you will be fine. Although carrying a sling and a change bag sounds a bit of a pain, if you are going on a long walk.

Anyway, baby might be late and pram might come early! Good luck!

DilysPrice · 06/04/2011 15:54

First babies traditionally late aren't they?
I agree that I didn't use mine at all in the first week, and could have managed easily with a sling in the second if I'd had to. You definitely need a sling.
You may have a problem if baby is early, and you definitely have a problem if "pram"=travel system including car seat and you intend to drive home from hospital.

Acanthus · 06/04/2011 16:02

I used mine very day. Lovely to get out. And FGS it's only a bloody pram the make and model really don't matter.

LionRock · 06/04/2011 16:28

Thanks everyone for your reassurance Smile

acanthus judging by the number of threads on MN about people going through many prams and pushchairs in a short space of time, you seem to be in the happy minority to find that any make or model will suit your needs!

only problem you would have is if the carseat is part of the package as dilysprice said, esp if you need to drive home with baby.

DancingThroughLife · 06/04/2011 20:47

I didn't leavethehouse use the pushchair/pram for a couple of weeks after DD was born.

After that I used it almost every day for 6 months. Even now, on my not-at-work days I use it all time.

I wish I'd had a sling though. Would have been much easier, although she was a summer baby and I would have been worried about her overheating with me sweating around the place! Smile

suzie38 · 06/04/2011 21:10

I spent 2 days in hospital...First day out i couldn't resist taking DD for a walk in her proper Silver Cross pram, paid for it by time we got home as i'd lost a lot of blood and was pretty anaemic so was shattered...I had grand visions of long sleepy walks everyday like i did when i worked as a nanny but it didn't work out like that as i went back to work when she was 2 weeks old so she spent more time napping in the car or on me at home.

eeyore2 · 11/04/2011 14:46

I couldn't use a sling for the first few weeks as I had an emergency caesarian. I think we first used the pram 5 days after baby was born. If you are going out and about you or your partner could carry the baby in a car seat with a handle if your pram isn't available yet. My DS (v average size baby) was out of his carrycot at around 4.5 months. Could you borrow an old pram from a friend / relative for a couple of weeks?

FessaEst · 12/04/2011 12:26

I could easily have managed the early weeks without a pram. My Moby was all that was required (and a car seat for trips). I ended up using the pushchair a few days after just because I felt I should, but I had no real need for it for a good 4-6 weeks. Am sure you'll be fine.

sh77 · 14/04/2011 15:17

DS is 5 weeks and has not used his v expensive pram even once. I bought a moby wrap which is amazing for taking a newborn out. Wish i knew how useful wraps were before buying pram.

ZenNudist · 14/04/2011 15:42

I didn't use a pram til ds was 2weeks old. I did spend 5 days in hospital. If you are the sort to hibernate you will be fine. Get a moby / stretchy wrap, very good for newborns, they like to be carried close & it's less faff than a pram.

brillopads · 15/04/2011 07:38

OP haha I'm in similar position- we waited until I received my bonus wage in March to seriously look at prams, (EDD 18th May), we've now seen a package but there's a 6 week delivery time for it (although they've said they could send the car seat earlier, it's the actual pram they're waiting for delivery of) ... Initially I felt a clutch of panic at not ordering the package there & Then; but I have bought a Moby wrap and also feel very much like I'd want to "Get to know" LO and 'hibernate' for a while so have convinced myself that things will be fine!
