22 month gap - which buggy?

Hi there, DC number 2 is on the way and there'll be a 22 month gap between DS and the newbie. We live in London, do a lot of urban walking and a bit of off-roading in parks and commons. Currently have a micralite for DS which I love. I will need to get a double, although will get one 2nd hand as may not be using it for too long I guess, at which point we'll go back to using the micralite.

So, what's the best double in my situation? I'm looking at the Jane Powertwin, the BJCM double and the ubiquitous Phil and Teds. I think I prefer the BJCM but can you use it from birth? Would a P&T coccoon go in it so it can be used with a newborn.

Any other tips? thks!

I had a 22 month gap. We bought a second hand Jane Powertwin which looked like it would be fantastic for offroading. I never used in the end though and used a Revelo Kidsit buggy board instead (one where they can sit down) which is fantastic for urban walking but it'd be pretty awful for offroading. We just stuck to a sling and then backpack for offroading in the end.

I think there's a lot of people on here with much more experience of buggies though so hopefully someone else can help :)

The BJCM is suitable from birth but only forward facing unless you buy the 2011 model and new carrycot but it would be more than budget I should think. It is a lovely pushchair though and soo easy to use but I'm not sure how well it would off road. We used ours in parks to go over the grass but it does' nt cope well with snow/sand/gravel etc.

I personally never got on with the P&T but I know a lot of people love them. Again for off roading they would be a bit odd as I would imagine you would have to look out for mud and stones etc flying up onto DC in the lower seat.

I thought the Jane felt unstable to me because it was soo long and pivoted on one wheel if you were going over proper un-even ground I would'nt feel particularly safe that it would not tip onto the side.

How about the Out and About Nipper 360, that would do everything you want. It is lightweight and narrow for a side by side never had an issue with it fitting anywhere. It is also suitable form birth as it lays flat and the seats are pretty big so would last a while if needed for your eldest.

It also holds it's value well to sell second hand.

PBI - but do you have a picture upyourdiva of the BJCM with rear facing carrycot fitted on? Sounds excellent, but I've been googling and can't see this.....

is this it?

LawrieMarlow · 25/03/2011 19:51

There's 22 months between DS and DD and we had a phil and teds. I did love it :)

But DD is 5 now and I imagine the world of buggies may well have moved on a bit.

we had a mountain buggy btw, which was fantastic esp off road. can have a carrycot on that too.

only downside is that it doesn't fold down very small

Shambolicaholic · 26/03/2011 20:27

Thanks for this. Those of you with the side-by-sides, do they really fit through a standard doorway? We have a standard front door (duh - obviously) and a narrow hallyway with nowhere else apart from car boot to store the buggy so I'm concerned about where we'd put the buggy... Any thoughts?

the mountain buggy just fits through our doorway. I tended to keep it in the boot of the car most of the time tho

Ohhhh.... the BJCM with the carrycot.... i want!!!

Guildfordnanny · 05/04/2011 19:48

Honestly if you can wait a few more months, I think the Mountain Buggy Duet is the most exciting double pushchair of the year. It's smaller than the City Select tandem in width but has bigger seats than the Baby Jogger City Mini. Have a look at this:www.bestbuggy.co.uk/category/twins/mountain-buggy-duet/ It takes carrycots and car seats and hopefully arrives in May - shops are certainly taking pre orders now. My order is in :) and my BJCM will be sold.

i am watching with interest as i am in the exact same position..pregnant with number two, same age gap...

mountain buggy seems great....only question is how heavy is it and can i get on a bus in london with it

Moodykat · 07/04/2011 20:56

Not sure about getting on a bus with the MB but can vouch for the fact its really bloody heavy!

Guildfordnanny · 07/04/2011 21:15

The Duet is a lighter and small pushchair than the Duo. I believe it will be around 14lbs which is less than a City Select. I think it will be perfect for buses. I would rather take a Duet than many other options!

mummysleepy · 07/04/2011 21:53

14kg I think guildfordnanny!
I have mine on pre-order too having FINALLY decided on this over the other options.
DC3 due end of may, will have 21month gap.
hoping they arrive in time
