Are 4 wheels better than 3??

Hi ladies, I'm 24 wks pregnant with my first baby & finding the right pushchair/travel system is driving me crazy! I really don't want to end up with something I want to get rid of as soon as I've purchased it.
It needs to be easy to push & manouvre, to be used on grass/woods at times but great for around town as I do a lot of walking. I am also 6ft so a high handle is essential.
I'm having a few discussions with hubby as he feels that 4 wheels are gonna be better than 3 especially when it comes to getting up kerbs, bumpy conditions etc.
Can someone please help??

I had a 3 wheel Quinny Buzz and it was fine for getting up kerbs. It has an adjustable handle so good if you are tall.

It was very wide across the back wheels though so couldn't fit through narrow doorways.

All those travel systems are heavy I've found - I jacked mine in at 4 months and bought a McClaren pushchair so that I could get on the bus and train!

However, the Quinny was lovely and cosy for a newborn baby.

hi, we have the teutonia spirit s3 which sounds like it would work for you. you can get other teutonias that have 4 wheels but dp wanted 3. we have been so pleased with it over last couple of years we bought the double a few months ago. is really cosy for baby and can be rf when out of the carrycot.

:)

i have a britax vigour- now branded as b smart- you can get 3 or 4 wheel versions- i have 3 wheels. it has been great over sand, grass, snow- but like many prams/pushchairs that face both ways it is bulky when folded. i did have a quinny buzz- but do prefer the britax one-although the buzz was great to keep the chassis in the car and stick the car seat onto it for quick trips etc. i didnt find the buzz good over many terrains though.
i use my britax daily- baby is now 15 months and i cant see him going into a stroller yet.
i recently saw a teutonia and thought it was great but i dont know any stockists and that was the first one i had ever seen.
you need to think about if you want a car seat to clip onto the frame for quick trips out? if you want a separate carrycot or a seat unit that lies flat? how big car boot is? hallway size-door size?

I think it really depends on the individual pushchair and how it is "engineered/designed". There are some rubbish 3 wheelers and some great ones (same with 4 wheelers).
If you are tall - you need to get something with a tall handle and with enough room for you to stride behind without kicking the axel!
I'm only 5'7" and I've had problems with quite a lot of prams being to short - I have a long stride! (maybe I should add I have school age children also - and am always hurrying to school in the mornings and dashing about on errands - not just leisurely strolling!).

Brands I like for great quality and design are: Baby Jogger and Bugaboo.

With my first I bought a travel system. Big mistake. Far too big, bulky and heavy. It was changed to something smaller by the time she was 6 months old.

The second time I bought a lightweight (4.5 kilos) 4 wheeler. Was very pleased with it till DS1 got to the age of 2 and half. He was a very bg baby and simply didn't fit into it by this stage. Replaced with a cheap stoller that did the job till he didn't need a buggy anymore.

Having learnt from previous mistakes DS2 got a stroller right from the word go. Again the lightest I could find. Think it is about 5 kilos. Perfect. He will be in it till he has outgrown being wheeled around... Oh and it cost me £40 off of eBay Smile

britax vigour/smart

baby jogger city mini

bugaboo frog/gecko/cam

these brands are IMO the best quality and design. i think these models would best suit you,but do try them out before you buySmile

Can I suggest the Bebe Confort High Trek too? It's ma-hoo-sive and heavy but I love it nonetheless. It's fab off road and reasonable for getting up and down curbs. It has a pretty narrow chassis too so very practical for shopping. Very small turning circle and adjustable handle and as MonkeysPunk points out, has good striding room.

We are out in the sticks and had the same concerns needing it to be robust enough to get round the country streets (which are very uneven!) as well as the town/city. We went for the Maxi-Cosi Mura 3 as recommended by our local shop. Its got 3 wheels and ideal for both as you can fix the front wheel for the uneven ground and free it up for the town.

sazm · 24/01/2011 13:32

we have 2 pushchairs,
one for in town (mac xt)
and one for at home (old but solid teutonia which is indestructable)

works for us.

Thanks for the replies ladies, I must say I do like the baby jogger but my mum doesn't think its suitable from birth as it seems 'flimsy' to her. I think its cos she's old fashioned & likes the look of a pram.

Bugaboo Cam would be best for you I think as it has a adjustable handle. I know from when I had DS I will probably want a smaller stroller in a few months but love having a proper pram amd pushchair too.

So I have a 2nd hand bugaboo frog with new car seat it was only £150 so I won't feel bad when I get a stroller too later on. My lovely Bugaboo looks as good as new by the way

If you are planning another child shortly afterwards (within 2-3 years or less) then it might be worth looking at the B-dual. It is a lovely 3 or 4 wheeler, same as the britax vigour and you can add a carrycot, britax car seat or second seat to it. they have them on ebay right now for very, very cheap. obviously it is heavy to put into the car so if you do a lot of driving i'd get a maclaren xt/city mini for the car as well. between these two you'd be sorted for all stroller needs for the next 2-3 years.

Maddikins · 30/01/2011 23:09

I have the Baby Jogger City Mini and love it. My friend has just bought it with the carrycot to use from birth with her new baby and she just wishes she'd bought it before for her ds.

Gethsemane · 31/01/2011 13:01

I've got a Baby Jogger City Mini and it has been great. Really easy to fold up and steer, and great for walks on tough terrains. I used it from newborn without getting an extra carrycot (just put the seat completely flat). Now I've got number 2 on the way though and am wishing I had opted for something that you could add another seat on to. Doh.
