Cheap double pram for big 3 y/o and little 1 y/o

I'm probably going to get roasted here for this but I need a double pram for my youngest 2 dds on of whom is a tall 3.2y/o (over 1m now ASAP.

I have had the First Wheel City Twin (which I loved but the seats wouldn't fit DD2 now) and the P&T E3 which I hated but I sold them a year ago as DD2 was walking everywhere and wouldn't go in either of them (she wasn't 2 when she stopped sitting in a pram.

DD2's now got some mystery illness which makes her legs give out and her joints hurt so she finds standing on the buggy board difficult and often sits on the foot rest of the pram (Emmaljunga so can take it!) but as DD3 is getting bigger her feet now reach the foot rest and she's getting squashed.

I do put DD2 in the pram and sling DD3 but my back hurts after a while and I don't drive so have to walk/bus it everywhere. I have a Emmaljunga classic type pram, a Safety First Surf and a Loola Up (Loola Up/Emmaljunga have buggy board fittings) in my 'stable'.

While the Drs work out what's wrong with DD2 or until she gets better I'm going to need a double pushchair which will fit a tall 3 y/o (she's very skinny though) and a tiny 1y/o who sleeps in the pram a lot so needs a recline. The DD1's school is on top of a hill so have to get any pram I have up that and it needs to have a decent sized basket for shopping/school paraphernalia. I'm tallish so a titchy pram won't work (long legs/short arms combo too) and the cheaper the better. I'm going to have to get over my insistence on DD3 facing me though for a while (genuine reason for it though Sad) and take what fits DD2.

Any ideas?

something like that? pram

mamaloco · 19/01/2011 09:39

Can you borrow one? ask around the playgroups or schools. Or find a cheap second hand one?

mamadiva · 19/01/2011 09:45

The Baby Jogger City mini double is good and fits a big child no bother they can be bought at a decent price second hand.

Sadly not rear facing though it does have several viewing windows.

Stay away from the nipper 360 as the handle is rediculously short and I am only 5ft 3.

Something like the one mamaloco would be good too.

StartingAfresh · 19/01/2011 09:47

Have you looked at the Joovy, the mini moda or the sit and stand?

TruthSweet · 19/01/2011 09:59

I think I will need something that reclines fully as DD3 sleeps for hours in the pram and DD2 tried to go to sleep in the Emmaljunga on the school run this morning so a Sit'n'Stand type is not going to work unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Mamadiva - thanks for warning me of the Nipper - I saw one last night 2nd hand and nearly got it......

Truth Sweet the handle on the nipper is quite low (101 cms), but because of the way you can walk behind it, it doesn't feel too low to push. My DP is 6ft and has problems with his shoulders so we have been through many pushchairs to find one that he can push comfortably. We have a Maclaren XT as our stroller which DP really likes as the handles are really high, but he also likes our nipper which we have for off-roading and says the the handle height is fine.

It might be worth going to look at the nipper and having a push in person to see what you think.

ClenchedBottom · 19/01/2011 10:05

Erm we had a Nipper it was fab and I'm 6ft tall.............

ClenchedBottom · 19/01/2011 10:06

Sorry, point being - try before you decide on anything.

mamadiva · 19/01/2011 11:37

Must just be me then Blush

Although admittedly Ido normally put handles up pretty high if they are adjustable, another thing I hated about nipper actually.

Try it out I know a lot of people like it I just thought it was a PITA from folding to not sitting up properly.

TruthSweet · 19/01/2011 14:28

A school mum has a Nipper so I might ask her if I can have a whirl. Will it fit a tall child?

Are the seats very reclined?

The mamaloco one looks like an European version of the Joovy.

oooggs · 19/01/2011 21:57

the nipper reclines fine as used it for newborn twins, I push it fine and am 5'8" and dh is 6'4" have had no problems with the handle height.

dt1 has been in it recently when she was poorly and she is tall and 3yrs & 9mths

it goes through my front door and I haven't had any problems with it.

babybear5 · 19/01/2011 22:06

i have a phil and teds sports buggy which my 4 year and 3 year still use.

Also have you thought..babydan have a toddler pram seat which is great. It is like the old fashioned silver cross pram seats you used to put on top of your pram. It is sturdy and fits on to any hard body of pram.
your elder child can sit on top of pram then, whilst still having baby facing you in pram that you already use and still can recline or upright back. best of all you don't need to buy a new pram. It works at treat for me and they retail about £30.00 and there are some second hand ones on e bay. much cheaper than a new buggy. Smile Check out the www.babydan.co.uk and you can see pics. Best of luck..i know how you feel. I have had more prams than hot dinners Smile

babybear - the ay the Emmaljunga reclines/sits uup mean that I could only use the pram seat if DD3 was lying flat - otherwise she would have her face in DD2's bum! I had thought of getting on though but it would only work with a non-sitting baby or a different pram (I've got the pushchair seat unit on the pram now rather than the carry cot).

Anyway a very kind friend has offered me a loan of her Urban detour double so hopefully DD2 will be better before long and I won't have to look into a more permanent solution

Hope she gets better soon!

Hevster · 20/01/2011 07:25

my hefty 3yo (tall and chunky) fits just fine in the nipper, there isn't loads of room with a coat on but enough and loads on the height. It goes flat for a newborn

TruthSweet · 20/01/2011 16:04

Argh! The UD is a beast!

I am ever so, ever so grateful to my friend for lending it to me though but it is absolutely huge - width wise that is - the seat unit is too short for DD2 and my back is killing me. Oh well, hopefully it's just for a few weeks until DD" is less wobbly.

babybear5 · 20/01/2011 20:30

she better soon. If you were close i would gladly have lent you my phil and teds..we in scotland.

Poor you..i hate the pushchair hunt.

TruthSweet · 22/01/2011 18:31

Got a Baby Jogger Mini Double this morning in red/cream/black - very nice to push even with a 5kg difference between DD2 & DD3.

It has such tall seat backs, I think if push came to shove DD1 could ride too (has been confined to pram because of asthma attacks before). Would really recommend it - only drawback is it's not parent facing but you can't have everything Grin
